Hi I am ganesh and suffering from the sever back pain so please tell me solution for my problem immediately so that g am happy.

Homeopath, Raebareli
Take mag phos 6x - thrice daily for next 2 weeks and update. Also do x-ray of the affected area. Heat and ice packs. Heat and/or cold therapy helps relieve most types of low back pain by reducing inflammation. Often patients use ice, but some prefer heat. Both may be used alternately.

Unhealthy Bones at Old Age - How to Prevent it?

Unhealthy Bones at Old Age - How to Prevent it?

Bones play a significant role in our body. They make our structure and help in organ protection, anchoring the muscles and storing calcium. From childhood to adulthood, bones are continuously changing. While new bones are generated, the old bones are torn down. So, it is important to keep our bones healthy with the advancement of old age. There are many ways by which we can avoid unhealthy bones in old age. Some of these ways have been discussed below:

Adequate amount of calcium intake in our body greatly influences healthy bone with good bone density and mitigate the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures in old age. Older adults need 1,200 mg of calcium a day by having milk, yogurt or cheese. We should also include non-dairy products like tofu, broccoli, almonds, and green leafy vegetables. These items contain Vitamin D, which help the body in absorbing and process calcium. Good sources of calcium are dairy products and fish such as sardines and salmon.

According to the Institute of Medicine, 1,000 mg of calcium a day is needed for most adults and 1,200 mg/day for women after menopause and men after 70. Adults that are 70 years and older require 800 IU of vitamin D a day to in order to prevent falls and fractures.

Physical Activity: Physical activity reduces the risk of osteoporosis and keeps your bone mobility healthy and strong. According to research, avoiding use of tobacco and alcohol contributes healthy bones. Consumption of these poses threat to the health of the bones. Alcohol increases the risk of osteoporosis as it has the ability to interfere with the body’s absorption of calcium.
Eating disorders and other conditions: People with anorexia or bulimia are at risk of bone loss. In addition, stomach surgery (gastrectomy), weight-loss surgery and conditions such as Crohn's disease, celiac disease and Cushing's disease can affect your body's ability to absorb calcium. So, one should have a healthy diet and maintain a disciplined life.

Certain medications: Long-term use of corticosteroid medications, such as prednisone, cortisone, prednisolone and dexamethasone, are damaging to bone. Other drugs that might increase the risk of osteoporosis include aromatase inhibitors to treat breast cancer, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, methotrexate, some anti-seizure medications, such as phenytoin (Dilantin) and phenobarbital, and proton pump inhibitors. So, while taking medicines one should consult doctor so as to avoid those medicines for long term which affect bone’s health. While taking these medications one should eat adequate amount of calcium as medicine and food in order to minimize the side effects.

Avoid taking caffeine as it makes our body to excrete calcium more quickly. So drink less regular coffee, tea and soft drinks and avoid high caffeine energy drinks. Avoid using salty foods that causes loss of calcium and weakens the bone. Foods that are processed and canned have high salt, so avoid eating these foods.

Simple ways to reduce risk of falling, especially for the elderly

Simple ways to reduce risk of falling, especially for the elderly
Preventing falls is a special concern for men and women with osteoporosis. Falls can increase the risk of fracturing a bone in the hip, wrist, spine, or other part of the skeleton. In addition to the environmental factors listed below, falls can also be caused by impaired vision and/or balance, chronic diseases that affect mental or physical functioning, and certain medications, such as sedatives and some antidepressants. It is important that individuals with osteoporosis be aware of any physical changes that affect their balance or gait, and that they discuss these changes with their health care provider.

1. Use a cane or walker for added stability.
2. Wear rubber-soled shoes for traction.

Simple tips
1. Make sure lighting is adequate especially night as falls are common when trying to walk in dark.
2. Eliminate clutter in the house and neatly strap loose wires etc so it does not come in the way.
3. Avoid using rugs where foot or cane can catch while walking.
4. Make sure there are bars to hold on to in the bathroom.
5. Elderly patients will reduce fall risk if they do gentle stretching exercises daily and keep up their walking.

Hello sir the reason for the problem your father is facing can be due to pain or can be due to other psychological reasons. The best approach would be to involve a physician near by so that he can assess your father and give the correct advice.

I experience severe pain in my right leg heel when I get up from sitting position and lasts for 15-20 min. I don't experience this pain while standing/walking/working. I consulted one orthopedic doctor and without any x-ray or anything, he told it could be due to vitamin D deficiency which appeared very strange to me. Can someone pls guide me.

Ankle stretch calves get a custom made insole. Hams stretching. Sports taping. Hot fomentation. Keep your leg raised while sitting or lying quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight leg raise: lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

I am 17 weeks pregnant. My cervical length is 3 cm. And doctor suggested me to have cervical stitch. Doing stitch is compulsory? Or if I can take any precautions or bed rest then it will be ok?

Pain Management Specialist, Vadodara
When doctor suggest it should be in your favor only. If you do not go for stitch, chances of abortion or early delivery increases. The best judge for your situation is your doctor only.

I was diagnosed for Rheumatoid Factor and the resulted value is 2.0. What does it mean. I underwent MRI AND Dexa-Bone Spine and Femur study as well. Reports are still pending. In past also I underwent MRI and found having issues in L4 and L5. I am having severe nervous pain and swelling in hands and legs from last 14-15 years and sometimes the pain is unbearable I took numerous medication from various specialist across the Nation but still no cure. All other reports seems ok apart from R factor. I will update once MRI AND DEXA-Bone reports are out. FYI, most of the specialist prescribed either sleeping pills or steroid. Sure, that will ease pain but its not a cure. Kindly help. Thanks.

MD - General Medicine, DM - Rheumatology
Rheumatologist, Delhi
Rheumatoid factor value of 2 is negative. But if you have swelling and pain of hand joints then you need to meet a Rheumatologist specifically to define what type of arthritis it is. There are other tests that can help in making diagnosis. RF can be negative in 20% patients of RA. WHETHER YOU HAVE SWELLING OF JOINTS OR GENERALISED SWELLING NEEDS TO BE ASSESSED BY PHYSICAL EXAMINATION BY A RHEUMATOLOGIST.
