When Will My Newborn Start Teething?

When Will My Newborn Start Teething?

Tooth eruption is not only a sign that your child is acquiring the ability to tear, bite, and chew food but it also effects the baby's weight gain, immunity strengthening and development of the brain indirectly.

It is observed that most babies get their first tooth at around 6 months after birth, but they may start gnawing as early as 3 months or as late as 14, and may vary from child to child.  This depends on many factors, one of them being as when the parents started sprouting teeth and whether or not your baby was a preemie. In case of premature and low birth weight babies there may be a delay in their first tooth eruption. Children should have a full set of primary teeth by the time they are almost three.

Babies generally undergo the following Teething Timeline:

  • 6 months: lower central incisors

  • 8 months: upper central incisors

  • 10 months: lower and upper lateral incisors

  • 14 months: first molars

  • 18 months: canines

  • 24 months: second molars

Symptoms of Teething:

  • Babies start gnawing to relieve the pain of an emerging tooth.

  • Puffy and red gums

  • Excessive drooling

  • Irritation, especially at night

  • Tugging Ear

  • A change in eating habits

Methods to Soothe the Pain:

Teething is a physiological process, no major intervention is needed.

  • Distraction: You can often soothe your child simply by diverting their minds off the pain by any new toy.

  • You shouldn't use teethers and topical teething gels to soothe the pain as they might be toxic to babies.

Symptoms of teething usually disappear when the tooth breaks through the gum. In case your baby is teething and the pain prevails , the following signs and symptoms are seen - high fever, diarrhea, or vomiting, highly inflamed gums or blue gum (Cysts) or any kind of lesion or bumps on the gums. In such case you should consult the pediatrician for further guidance.

My 3 months old boy has feedings from her mother, it is not sufficient to her, sometimes he is feeling hungry. So which food we give to him. Please suggests.

Hi, As per the recommendations all mothers has to give only breast feeding for first 6 months of age to their babies. If following points met, then your baby is getting sufficient milk from mother: 1. Mother is giving breast feeds more than 8 times per day. 2. Baby is sleeping well after each feed. 3. Baby should pass urine more than 6 times per day. 4. Baby should have adequate weight gain (atleast baby's current weight should be 900g - 1 kg more than the birth weight if age is 3 months completed, has the child grows well, the rate of weight gain will vary, have a regular check up of weight once in a month). ENCOURAGE THE MOTHER. MOTHER SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY STRESS / ANXIETY. MOTHER'S MILK IS THE BEST. DON'T INTRODUCE ANY FOODS TILL 6 MONTHS OF AGE.

Nature's Cavity Fighter

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Nature's Cavity Fighter

Fluoride is a mineral that helps fight tooth decay. It is found in public water supplies, toothpaste and many other dental products.

Often called, “nature’s cavity fighter,” fluoride helps repair the early stages of tooth decay even before the decay can be seen. Research shows that fluoride helps prevent cavities in children and adults by making teeth more resistant to the acid attacks that cause cavities. When you brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, use other fluoride dental products, and drink water with fluoride you are preventing cavities and strengthening your teeth’s outer surface, called enamel.

If you have a good chance of getting cavities, your dentist can apply fluoride to your teeth during your dental visit. Your dentist might also tell you to use a special fluoride rinse, paste or gel at home

I have two preterm daughters advice the age till which they will need exclusive breast feeding. Please tell.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Seoni
Hi if you ask exclusive breast milk then it is 6 months after you should start weaning. You have to gradually discourage breast milk because after 6 months water content is increase in breast milk nd baby did not get adequate calories. Up to 2 years we can cont. Breast feed but frequency should be less.

For fruit juice what is the measuring medium? Table spoon or tea spoon. I am giving my daughter 20 teaspoons of lemon juice. Is it an excess dosage? Shes exactly two years old.

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
Fruit juice is not a medicine to be given by measuring spoon. Fresh whole fruits are more desirable than juices, as it deprives us of important nutrient a fiber. Enjoy fruits as much as you want. Don't measure in terms of quantity but your enjoyment.

Meri sister ko 30 days pahle baby hui per ab usse dudh nahi nikal raha hai bahut pain ho raha hai please help koi upay bataye. Thanks.

Breast milk secretion is complet psyto-emotionally chemical event. Do not need to panic. Coconut water, onion, sauf are natural milk enhancers. There are milk enhancing drugs & powders available in market which can surely be guided by either pediatrician or obstretric doctor. Do not hurry to feed child anything else. Be commited to breast feed only with calm relaxed mind - getting stressed is natural - but time is the remedy to adopt new life in new world.

My boy is 2.9 years weight is 11.5 kg every month fever coming blood test and xray normal t.b also tested no result every month used 30 ml anti boitc cold and cough syrup used I am feeling sir, please tell me any suggestion give me sir.

DNB - Pediatrician
Pediatrician, Pondicherry
Hi, Most of the times during particular season children are prone to get fever frequently. Unless there is no major issue / any other symptoms during each time nothing to worry. Child's weight is ok now. Better give Vitamin D syrup (D3 MUST) 5 ml once a day & Zinc syrup (MINTONIA) 5 ml once a day for one month to improve the immunity. These are supportive measures. Prevention is best. Maintain good personal hygiene.

This is due to weather change. Give bryonia 30 thrice a day. Give 5 drops in one spoon warm water for 3 days. With this give ferrum phosphoricum 6x three tablets 5 times in a day. This will help to reduce fever.

My daughter is 11 months old and diagnosed with partial lactose intolerance at 2.5 mths old, she was partially taking mother milk until 7 mths age, she is now taking only zero lac milk powder. Her weight has been constant at 8 kg since past 2.months. what special care that should we do ? Any diet plan that she can recover on permanent basis ? I will be very gratefull.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), Pediatric Gastroenterology
Pediatrician, Delhi
Lactose intolerance is usually transient. Have you tried to introduce cows milk again or not ? You must try by giving some rice kheer or dahi chaval and wean the baby off the zerolac milk .

Dear lybrate-user, you struck with bitter truth of life. If you want to be overcome this situation:- 1) be strong, be a fighter and face reality. 2) under stand situation & accept truth. 3) hope for best & prepare for worst. 4) god help them who help them self. 5) keep your self physically & mentally busy in your work, it will help you to over come from depression. 6) do regularly breathing exercise - pranayama - omkar pramayama thrice daily. 7) where one road ends you have two options to progress.

My baby's DPT vaccination is due in 2 days. Shall I go for painless DPT instead of the regular painful DPT? Will that be effective in long run if I go for painless vaccine?

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Aurangabad
Yes, dpat vaccine (painless) is better in terms of the side effects like pain and fever but the efficacy in terms of immunity and protection is almost the same with both vaccines. But at present the availability of the painless vaccine is poor, so decide accordingly.

If she doesn't feel hungry, it could be a result of some emotional disturbance, if she has recently stopped feeling hungry, make sure she is not having any emotional difficulty to deal with.
