I want to know about 15 months German Shepherd feed and the health problems which may cause. Thank you.

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
15 months old German shepherd can be considered as an adolescent. they are now prone for hip joint problems like osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia and degenerative joint diseases. this can be prevented by avoiding their kennel or staying place on slippery floors like marbles and tiles. And by making sure they get a complete balanced diet containing ample amount of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids with minerals like calcium and phosphorus. they are also prone for gastrointestinal problems like inflammatory bowel disease and pancreatitis. this can be prevented by giving them hypoallergenic diets of various brands. eg. royal canine and Hill's. recently in India, there has been a subtle outbreak of tick fever in dogs. hairy breeds like German shepherds should be given extra care for proper and regular tick control medications life long to avoid such deadly diseases.

8 Tips For Your Dog This Summer!

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)
Veterinarian, Hyderabad

1. Make sure your dog has unlimited access to fresh water all the time.

2. Make sure your dog has access to shade when outside.

3. Take walks during the cooler hours of the day. Avoid 5-7 pm evening as the steam emitting from the road can kill your pet with heat stroke!

4. When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces (like coal tar roads) because it can burn your dog's paws.

5. If you feel it's hot outside, it's even hotter for your pet - make sure your pet has a means of cooling off.

6. Keep your dog free of external insects (fleas, ticks) - consult your veterinarian about the best product for your pet.

7. Consider clipping or shaving dogs with long coats (talk to your veterinarian first to see if it's appropriate for your pet).

8. If you have a short nose breed like pugs or bulldogs, keep a Turkish towel with you whenever traveling. Whenever you notice he/she is panting heavily, you can soak the towel in water and wrap it around his body to have a local cooling effect.

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
Why spay or neuter?
Every year, millions of unwanted dogs and cats, including puppies and kittens, are ORPHANED, END UP BECOMING MALNOURISHED, ROAM ON STREETS AND ARE PRONE TO ACCIDENTAL DEATHS. The good news is that RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS can make a difference. By having your dog or cat sterilized, you will do your part to prevent the birth of unwanted puppies and kittens. Spaying and neutering prevent unwanted litters and may reduce many of the behavioural problems associated with the mating instinct.
Spaying eliminates heat cycles and generally reduces the unwanted behaviours that may lead to owner frustration. Neutering male dogs and cats reduces the breeding instinct and can have a calming effect, making them less inclined to roam and more content to stay at home.
Early spaying of female dogs and cats can help PROTECT THEM FROM some serious health problems later in life such as UTERINE INFECTIONS AND BREAST CANCER. Neutering your male pet can also lessen its risk of developing BENIGN PROSTATIC HYPERPLASIA (ENLARGED PROSTATE GLAND) AND TESTICULAR CANCER.
The procedure has NO EFFECT ON A PET'S INTELLIGENCE OR ABILITY TO LEARN, PLAY, WORK OR HUNT. Most pets tend to be better behaved following surgical removal of their ovaries or testes, making them more desirable companions.

When to spay or neuter:
Talk to us about the most appropriate time to spay or neuter your pet based upon its breed, age and physical condition. Keep in mind that, contrary to popular belief, it may NOT be best to wait until your female dog or cat has gone through its first heat cycle.

Side effects of spaying/neutering:
The common myth is that pets put on weight after neutering, which up to an extent is true. Neutering reduces the BMR – Basal Metabolic Rate of the pets. However, as long as the diet and exercise if kept proper – pets DO NOT put on exorbitant weight. Urinary incontinence is another side effect observed in older females sterilized in older age. However, the side effects certainly do not weigh more than the benefits of spaying or neutering.
Discuss about this in detail with us, on your next visit. BE A RESPONSIBLE PET PARENT – NEUTER/SPAY YOUR PETS!!!

My 13 years old Pomeranian dog is having plaque on her teeth for a while. She recently also had her nose swollen for a couple of days because of the same reason. We provided her some medicine by a local vet but how can we treat her plaque ? it's spreading an she has also started to loose her teeth ! Please do reply ! Thank you !

MVSC
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
Provide her dog chews (hard bony like sticks) available in the pets shop to get rid of plaque. If its started loosing her tooth it is because of her age. Dont get panic.Check the nose for swelling , did she get any injury? plaque on teeth may not be reason for nose sweling

Due to her kidney problems, seems her heart is suffering a bit. Toxins r slowly raising to the brain. You have to get your dog to your nearby vet Dr. For daily blood tests and iv fluid therapies with proper antibiotics if any sign of infection is confirmed by the blood reports.

My dog is having some kind of invection on his ear.Like its kind of spoiled or anything. What shall i do?

MVSC
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
First look at the ear lobes of your dog, is it erect or drooping. Check for any discharge from the ears, if possible try to clean gently with sterile ear bud. If you see any colour or smell of ear bud , take to vet for ear cleaning. If the infection seems to be severe, even the culture of ear washings can help us for right antibiotic.

Is giving oral anti tick pills safe for dogs? Does this medicine endectin10 has any adverse side effects? My dog has got ticks but i'm hesitating to give him this medicine. Kindly advice me with the better way.

MVSc (Ph.D pursuing)
Veterinarian, Hyderabad
There are better and safer options than endectin 10. As it may not be sufficient at all in case of heavy recurrent tick infestation. You can consult your vet Dr. And ask for spot on. It comes by diff names by diff companies. Try to go for the best one in your area. Just a small tube of liquid to be applied in your dog body at one spot. And you r done. In 20 min, even children can touch the body. Can repeat monthly if required. No side effects no wastage of time n money. No troublesome for animals like other oral or injectables.

I am having a family of rabbits which consist 5 members and each of them having same problem. On there nose and ears they are having disease which looks ugly after then the hairs are also falling. So please give some tips to remove that disease.

M.V.Sc (Surgery)

It seems skin infection to your rabbit. First of all separate the health puppies. You should clip the hair from infected area. Then you should use antiseptic ointment or lotion on that area. Like cipladine.

My Dog is not eating. Her mouth has a terrible foul smell and has developed red rashes between her hind legs and under the tail. She has even become very aggressive and grumpy, and would not let anyone try to get her active.

MVSc, BVSc
Veterinarian,
How old is your pet? the foul smell could be from the dental disease. Kindly get her oral cavity evaluated for any dental disease/loose tooth/tarter/tooth root abscess etc. From a qualified Vet. These explorations are done generally under sedation. Take care.
