How To Identify The Best Moisturizer For Your Skin?

MBBS, MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy
Dermatologist, Mohali
How To Identify The Best Moisturizer For Your Skin?

Which moisturiser will work best for your skin type?

Moisturisers are extremely essential during winters for keeping your skin soft and hydrated. The chief function of moisturisers is to ensure that the outermost layer of your skin can hold water to prevent the skin from becoming dry and charred. But, any moisturiser you choose randomly might not be effective for your skin. For making the most of your moisturiser choose one that is suitable for your specific skin type. Read on to find about the correct type of moisturisers required for each skin type.

1. Dry skin

Dry skin becomes even drier during the winters and requires a heavier, oil-based moisturiser with hydrating ingredients to remain soft. Additionally, if your skin is too dry or cracked, using products containing mineral jellies like petroleum jelly will be beneficial. This is because these products are known to minimise evaporation of moisture from your skin.

2. Oily skin

Acne and breakouts mostly occur on the oily skin, so it will be best to choose a light, water-based moisturiser if you have this type of skin. Moreover, try to opt for a product that is non-comedogenic in nature, which will ensure that you do not get clogged pores due to the moisturiser.

3. Normal skin

Normal skin can be characterised by perfect natural oil balance and an even tone. For keeping your skin soft you need to keep this natural balance intact, which can be done by using a water-based product containing lightweight oils or ingredients derived from silicon. Additionally, ensure that your moisturiser gives your skin a light non-greasy feel.

4. Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is generally prone to skin irritations, itching, redness and rashes. If you have sensitive skin, then look for a moisturiser that contains ingredients known for generating a soothing effect like chamomile or aloe. Moreover, ensure that the product is free from potential allergens like fragrances or dyes and acids to prevent side effects such as skin irritation.

5. Combination skin

Combination skin is the toughest type of skin to maintain. People with this type of skin have an oily t-zone consisting of the nose, chin and forehead along with the cheeks having dry skin. To keep combination skin hydrated you need to use a heavy moisturiser on the cheeks and an oil-free water-based product on the t-zone. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Dermatologist.

Hair loss, also known as alopecia or baldness, refers to a loss of hair from the head or body. Baldness can refer to general hair loss or male pattern hair loss. People have between 100,000 and 150,000 hairs on their head. The number of strands normally lost in a day varies, but on average is 100. In order to maintain a normal volume, hair must be replaced at the same rate at which it is lost. The first signs of hair thinning that people will often notice are more hairs than usual left in the hairbrush after brushing or in the basin after shampooing. Styling can also reveal areas of thinning, such as a wider parting or a thinning crown More than 95% of hair loss in men is male pattern baldness (MPB. MPB is characterized by hair receding from the lateral sides of the forehead (known as a "receding hairline") and/or a thinning crown (balding to the area known as the ‘vertex’). Temporary or permanent hair loss can be caused by several medications, including those for blood pressure problems, diabetes, heart disease and cholesterol. Any that affect the body’s hormone balance can have a pronounced effect: these include the contraceptive pill, hormone replacement therapy, steroids and acne medications. Traction alopecia is most commonly found in people with ponytails or cornrows who pull on their hair with excessive force. In addition, rigorous brushing and heat styling, rough scalp massage can damage the cuticle, the hard outer casing of the hair. This causes individual strands to become weak and break off, reducing overall hair volume. Trichotillomania is the loss of hair caused by compulsive pulling and bending of the hairs. Onset of this disorder tends to begin around the onset of puberty and usually continues through adulthood. Due to the constant extraction of the hair roots, permanent hair loss can occur. Traumas such as childbirth, major surgery, poisoning, and severe stress may cause a hair loss condition known as telogen effluvium, in which a large number of hairs enter the resting phase at the same time, causing shedding and subsequent thinning. Hair loss often follows childbirth without causing baldness. In this situation, the hair is actually thicker during pregnancy due to increased circulating oestrogens. After the baby is born, the oestrogen levels fall back to normal prepregnancy levels, and the additional hair foliage drops out. A similar situation occurs in women taking the fertility-stimulating drug clomiphene. Hypothyroidism (an under-active thyroid) and the side effects of its related medications can cause hair loss, typically frontal, which is particularly associated with thinning of the outer third of the eyebrows (also seen with syphilis). Hyperthyroidism (an over-active thyroid) can also cause hair loss, which is parietal rather than frontal. Temporary loss of hair can occur in areas where sebaceous cysts are present for considerable duration (normally one to several weeks). Gradual thinning of hair with age is a natural condition. This is caused by an increasing number of hair follicles switching from the growth, or anagen, phase into a resting phase, or telogen phase, so that remaining hairs become shorter and fewer in number. An unhealthy scalp environment can play a significant role in hair thinning by contributing to miniaturization or causing damage. Air and water pollutants], environmental toxins, conventional styling products and excessive amounts of sebum have the potential to build up on the scalp. This debris can block hair follicles and cause their deterioration and consequent miniaturization of hair, It can also physically restrict hair growth or damage the hair cuticle leading to hair that is weakened and easily broken off before its natural lifecycle has ended. In homeopathy after proper case taking medicine will be prescribed accordingly. So pls consult either to a homeopath nearby your residence or you can consult me via Lybrate. General medicines are arnica, jaborandi which are easily available in oil base. Some very good shampoos are also available in homeopathy which prevent hair fall and early greying of hairs.

Silica may not be a word you commonly hear associated with diet (or foods that prevent hair loss, for that matter). If you’re looking to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss, however, silica will need to be on your menu. The body uses silica to help it absorb vitamins and minerals; if you’re not consuming silica, eating your vitamins might not be helping much. Silica can be found in bean sprouts and the skin of cucumbers, red and green peppers, and potatoes. Remember, when you eat these foods raw, as opposed to cooked, you’re getting more nutritional value out of them. If you want to keep it, you’d be wise to eat foods that prevent hair loss

Shampoos are not supposed to help you with hairfall as their only function is to clean. Shampoos don't have any nutrients in them. Hair fall can be reduced or brought under control by improving your diet. Try taking balanced and on time meals. Include sprouts, fruits, leafy vegetable and some dry fruits regularly in your diet. Wash with mild shampoo to avoid damage to already weak hair shaft. If hair fall persists after these measures consult a qualified dermatologist.

lybrate-user Your data is inadequate to diagnose your case. Hyperpgmentation means black spot is darkening of area of skin due to increased melanin. Causes can be sensitive to sun exposure, acne vulgaris, it can be due to melasma known as chloasma in which it is patchy hyperpigmentation. Sometime stress can also cause increased melanocyte stimulating harmone. Take homeopathy for permanent cure if it is acquared. If it is congenital then no cure.

Here are some queries related to laser hair reduction.

Hi, I am Dr. Nivedita Dadu, a dermatologist at Skinolgy Skin Clinic and today I'll be answering some queries on Laser Hair Reduction.

While most of us maybe thinking that hardcore hairs on the female face are only a cosmetic concern, the truth is that this could be an indication of underlying hormonal imbalance that needs to be diagnosed and treated. Anybody can get hair removal laser males or females but unwanted hair in female requires investigation.

Benefits of hair laser treatment include reduction in hair density and change in hair texture from hard cores dark hair to finer, fewer & lighter hair with longer hair free periods. If laser is being done by a trained dermatologist, take care that all necessary precautions like skin hydration and moisturization are taken and the parameter of laser decides according to your complexion and according to the type of hair and the body part that is being lasered then you can be assured of optimum results with no side effects.

For any further queries, you can contact directly or through Lybrate.

You can take homoeopathic medicines – Berberis Aquefolium Q/ 10 drops in 1/2 cup of water/ thrice a day and Kali Brom. 200/ thrice a day – for 20 days. Wash your face with Bakson's Facewash (wash your face with warm water only) and followed by CTMP, i.e., cleansing, toning, moisturising and protection (apply liberally Sunscreen Gel with SPF-30) after washing your face daily. Use home-made remedies: - Take 1 tbsp of fuller's earth (multani mitti) + a dash of lime + bit of rosewater – apply this on your face till it gets dried up, then rinse it off. - Take 1 tsp of Alum (or fitkari), make it slightly wet with water and apply this on your wet face, spread it well; let it dry and rinse it off. Alum remove your excessive moisture or oil and it also tightens the skin's tonicity.
