Bone Fracture - Common Types and How They Can be Prevented?

The human body allows for movement through the complex system of bones, muscles and joints. A break in the bone is medically known as a fracture and can be caused by constant stress, pressure or impact. It is common knowledge that with age, the bone strength decreases and incidence of fractures (osteoporotic fracture) increases. Based on the affected bone and impact, different types of fractures are commonly identified as:

  1. Complete: When the breakage of the bone is complete, producing two or more pieces, it is referred to as a complete fracture.
  2. Incomplete: When the breakage is incomplete, where the bone has cracked, but does not break into pieces, it is known as an incomplete fracture.
  3. Another type would be the open or closed fracture:
    • Open fracture: When the skin is exposed and the bone breaks through this exposed skin, it is known as compound or open fracture.
    • Simple or closed fracture: The bone breaks, but the skin continuity is maintained. Again, here are different types including hairline, greenstick, oblique, etc.

What is the reason behind a fracture?
A bone will fracture when force is applied to it that is stronger than the bone itself. A key factor in a bone’s susceptibility to fracturing is age. Both children and older people are prone to bone fractures. Children’s bones are constantly growing and have not reached their full strength. Elderly people have brittle bones with old age and are prone to develop bone diseases, making them susceptible to fractures.

How they are treated?
Splint and pain medications are commonly used. Closed reduction where the fracture is reduced without opening up the tissues and open reduction, where the tissues are opened up are common approaches to managing fractures.

Can they be prevented?
Especially with children and in the elderly, extra precaution should be taken to avoid any kind of injury and fracture.

  1. Develop an exercise routine to strengthen the muscles
  2. Manage weight
  3. Use the right footwear and exercise gear
  4. Watch your medications (avoid sleep inducing ones)
  5. Increase lighting in the room/home to improve clarity of vision for elderly
  6. Make the home/living area fall-proof by reducing clutter, using railing in the bathroom and bedrRhinoplastyoom, using rubber mat, etc.
  7. While a fall may seem inevitable, taking the above steps can help reduce the incidence and severity of a fall, thereby minimizing damage. If you wish to discuss any specific problem, you can consult an orthopedist.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am dr akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. This kind of pain is usually due to inflammation of your heel fascia. It is chronic pain which get aggravated especially when you walk more and is better with rest. Treatment modalities are aimed at relieving inflammation of the fascia, like ice packs, physical therapy, footwear modification and anti-inflammatory therapy. Please tell me are both heels affected, is there any swelling or signs of inflammation present? what tests have you done till now to establish a diagnosis? do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. I am 75 years old, am having shoulder pain, it like frozen shoulder. I can move my right hand freely but there is pain, am also doing excercise- but the pain is still there. Now it is running for 5 months. Please advise.

Dear Lybrate User, *Diet for rheumatoid arthritis is very important in the treatment. Rheumatoid arthritis is a complex and chronic disease, involving many systems. In Ayurvedic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, diet advice is as important as Panchakarma therapy and the Ayurvedic medicines. Since Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disease (long-standing), the dietary restrictions are to be observed for a long period of time as well. *Healthy eating habit: *Avoid: Curd,Fishes,A green leafy vegetable called Indian spinach [Basella rubra ] is to be avoided. *Contaminated water, cold water, frozen food stuff *avoid High fat meet, mutton etc. *Food that are heavy to digest, deep-fried stuff, junk foods, aerated drinks. *In Rheumatoid arthritis, oil massage is not advised.

Hi you can relieve short-term joint pain with a few simple techniques at home. 1) protect the joint with further injury. 2) rest the joint, avoiding any activities that cause you pain. 3) ice the joint for about 15 minutes, several times each day. 4) compress the joint using an elastic wrap. 5) elevate the joint above the level of your heart. 6) if you are overweight do exercise like swimming or cycling to reduce weight.

Hello as you are saying it seems as muscle strain give some warmth to affected part. If not resolved with that then do a sonography abdomen there may a kidney stone.

It results from severe vasospasm in response to a temperature change, causes marked and typically sharply demarcated pallor of one or more digits. As circulation recovers, the digit becomes blue (cyanotic) and then bright red because of rebound hyperaemia — the triphasic response. Raynaud ’s is commoner in females than males. In young women the condition is often a harm less nuisance, requiring warm gloves and sometimes vasodilators. Its onset for the first time in older people warrants investigation. Raynaud ’s may also be part of a systemic autoimmune disorder (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or systemic sclerosis), and it occasionally leads to necrosis. When associated with rheumatoid disease, Raynaud ’s can be extremely severe and requires specialist referral. It can also occur in people who use vibrating tools. Roughly two out of  three patients with primary Raynaud ’s phenomenon have spontaneous resolution of their symptoms (Spencer - Green, 1998).

Hi you can start physiotherapy treatment to strengthen the muscles around the knee joint. Meanwhile apply cold pack for 20 minutes thrice a day for 5 days. Do reply for private consultation and detailed treatment plan wishing you a good health.

1) do massage with warm sesame oil or suitable oil for 15 min. Afterwards take hot fomentation for 10 min. 2) start natural calcium supplement. 3) do regular stretching exercise 4) in yoga do bhujangasan, halasan & suryanamaskar. Life-style correction 1) correct your sitting posture. 2) take small pillow or back rest for lower back. 3) foot should rest to floor easily. 4) take small break after 1 hr & walk few steps. 5) do neck & upper back extension, give feedback after 4 days.

I suggest you follow the below for your condition: take mag phos 6x - thrice daily for next 2 weeks and update. Also do x-ray of the affected area. Heat and ice packs. Heat and/or cold therapy helps relieve most types of low back pain by reducing inflammation. Often patients use ice, but some prefer heat. Both may be used alternately.

This is a general low back ache and for this you can follow these measures: one keep a pillow right under the knee while sleeping, next is you can keep ice in the painful area for about 5--10 minutes, if pain still persists you can stretch your body by twisting the waist on both sides how we used to do in the school drill similarly you can try which will help you relax as well will reduce the pain. If you have back pain after you sit for long hours then it is due to your haemoglobin levels as it is important to check that. Anaemia always leads to the symptoms of being tired and also having back / leg pain though there may not be any pathological reasons for back pain.

Hi I am 63 years old and having pain in the right knee (diagnosed as reduction of space) am also over weight (90 kg). Doctors tell me to reduce weight. But the orthopayic had asked me to rest. If I rest I cannot reduce weight. So I on my own decided to walk everyday. I walk 5 - 6 km daily. While walking I use knee cap and do not feel psin unless leg bends side ways, but while sleeping I do get pain on the left side of the knee (bearable though). I do take biocart-msm 1 tablet one daily, triflex fast acting two daily, and apply celadrin cream 2 - 3 times on the affected knee. Suggest exercises to get rid of the knee pain.

Keep continue physiotherapy a d tk calcium supplements and vitd also. Wax therapy tens and ultrasonic therapy for few days if your father is a diabetic then do not take tension its takes some time bcoz of diabetic. Tk medicine for to control diabetic.
