Dealing With Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease

MD
General Physician, Mumbai
Dealing With Gastro Oesophageal Reflux Disease

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, as it is commonly known is a digestive disorder that is caused primarily due to intestinal distress. GERD is caused in the muscle that lies between the oesophagus and the stomach, when the acid produced in the stomach starts to flow backwards. For patients suffering from GERD, the acids flow back into the oesophagus instead of the stomach, causing symptoms like severe heartburn, chest pain and nausea, among others.

So what does one do to deal with GERD? Here's a brief list:

  • Control weight: Being overweight and obese are two of the most important factors that contribute to discomfort in GERD patients. Working towards a healthier weight is a sure shot way of dealing with this ailment.
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking: The LES or the muscle ring that can be found between the stomach and the oesophagus relaxes with the intake of alcohol or with smoking, which prevents it from closing, in order to stop the stomach's juices from reaching the oesophagus. So, giving up both substances would be a good idea if you are a GERD patient.
  • Go gluten free: Adopting a gluten free diet can help you cut ingredients, including grains and dairy products that contain more protein than what your digestive tract can handle.
  • Other dietary measures: In order to handle GERD effectively, you will need to remove or reduce chocolate, fatty food, spicy food, and even oily and fried food from your diet. You may need the help of food with extra fibre, like fruit, so that food can pass through the digestive tract faster.
  • Smaller and well timed meals: Eating meals regularly and dividing them into smaller meals that can be digested quickly and more efficiently is one of the best ways of dealing with GERD to prevent the onset of backward flowing stomach acids.
  • Exercise: Ensuring that you do not take a nap or lie down right after a meal and doing exercise everyday will also help in doing away with the uncomfortable and painful symptoms of this disease.

Making lifestyle changes is one of the best ways to deal with GERD. Yet, it would be best to see a doctor regarding severe cases where the symptoms do not abate and medication may be required.

You can definitely travel while pregnant. As long as there are no identified complications or concerns with your pregnancy, it is generally safe to travel at all times during your pregnancy. The ideal time to travel during pregnancy is after 3 months because of morning sickness or nausea and vomiting. Your pregnancy can be confirmed on 2nd of april with urine pregnancy test.

Healthy Gut OR Host for Parasite

Intestinal parasites-Tape warm, ring warm, thread worm, Whip worm........You would have heard about them.

We all are living in an environment full of toxins and Parasites. Toxins makes our immunity weak, let the parasite get entered into our blood and get settled in our gut. And now whatever good we are having is not nourishing us, but firstly to our tiny unwanted guest.

The signs of a parasite can often appear unrelated and unexplained. It is typically seen, parasites causes more constipation in patients than diarrhoea, but some parasites are capable of changing the fluid balance in your gut and causes diarrhoea. Trouble sleeping, skin irritations, mood changes, and muscle pain can all be caused by the toxins that parasites release into the bloodstream. These toxins often cause anxiety, which can manifest itself in different ways. For instance, waking up in the middle of the night or grinding your teeth in your sleep are signs that your body is experiencing anxiety while you rest. When these toxins interact with your neurotransmitters or blood cells, they can cause mood swings or skin irritation, Rashes or Itchiness.

Few others signs are:

You can get infected by:

- Walking barefoot in the garden, playground or any infected soil; for example, hookworm larvae burrow through the skin of bare feet.

- Ingesting worm eggs through eating fruits, vegetables, grains, fish and meat contaminated with roundworm or whip worm.

- Washing fruits and vegetables with contaminated water.

- Transfer of the parasitic worms from pets to owner.

- Coming in contact with the soil that has been contaminated with human faeces from an infected person.

- Not washing hands with soap and water after defecating. Open air defecation also increases the risk of worm infestation.

Worm infestation affects normal growth in children and can cause malnutrition in adults too. Thus, it is recommended to de-worm babies in every six months after they turn one. De-worming medication kills adult worms but not the eggs + new infection form above mentioned sources makes repetition of the dose in every six months vital, even in adults too.

In Ayurveda, there are natural remedies for de- worming. That are safe and effective:

  • Ajwain (carom seeds): Ajwain seeds taken with jaggery dissolved in cold water early in the morning expels worms during defecation.
  • Castor Oil : Take 1 spoon Castor oil and eat 10 gm Sugar on an empty stomach. One of the best remedy for all intestinal parasite. (It can raise the frequency of defecation)
  • Bael (Bengal quince, wood apple): The fruit kills the worm within the body which is then expelled with stools.
  • Palasha (flame of the forest): Effective in treating roundworms. Take the seeds with buttermilk twice daily.
  • Tulsi (sweet basil): Seeds of Tulsi in water or even chewing the leaves on an empty stomach is an effective remedy for all parasitic worms, including tapeworm.

So protect yourself and your loved ones from intestinal parasites. Keep your gut Happy and yourself Healthy.

Vaginal discharge is most often a normal and regular occurrence. However, there are certain types of discharge that can indicate an infection. Abnormal discharge may be yellow or green, chunky in consistency, or have a foul odor. Abnormal discharge is usually caused by yeast or bacterial infection. If you notice any discharge that looks unusual or is foul smelling. Types of Vaginal Discharge There are several different types of vaginal discharge. These types are categorized based on their color and consistency. Some types of discharge are normal, but others may indicate an underlying condition that requires treatment. White A bit of white discharge, especially at the beginning or end of your menstrual cycle, is normal. However, if the discharge is accompanied by itching and has a thick, cottage cheese-like consistency or appearance, it’s not normal and needs treatment. This type of discharge may be a sign of a yeast infection. Clear and Watery A clear and watery discharge is perfectly normal and can occur at any time of the month. It may be especially heavy after exercise. Clear and Stretchy When discharge is clear but stretchy and mucous-like, rather than watery, it indicates that you are likely ovulating. This is a normal type of discharge. Brown or Bloody Brown or bloody discharge is usually normal, especially when it occurs during or right after your menstrual cycle. A late discharge at the end of your period can look brown instead of red. You may also experience a small amount of bloody discharge in between periods, which is called spotting. If spotting occurs during the normal time of your period and you have recently had sex without protection, this could be a sign of pregnancy. Spotting during an early phase of pregnancy can be a sign of miscarriage, In rare cases, brown or bloody discharge can be a sign of advanced cervical cancer. This is why it’s important to get a yearly pelvic exam and Pap smear test. Yellow or Green A yellow or green discharge, especially when it’s thick, chunky, or accompanied by a bad smell, is not normal. This type of discharge may be a sign of the infection trichomoniasis, which is commonly spread through sexual intercourse. Causes of Vaginal Discharge Normal vaginal discharge is a healthy bodily function, and it’s your body’s way of cleaning and protecting the vagina. It’s normal for discharge to increase with exercise, sexual arousal, ovulation, birth control pill use, and emotional stress. Abnormal vaginal discharge, however, is usually caused by an infection. Bacterial Vaginosis Bacterial vaginosis is a bacterial infection and is quite common. This infection causes increased vaginal discharge that has a strong, foul, and sometimes fishy odor, although it produces no symptoms in some cases. Women who receive oral sex or who have multiple sexual partners have an increased risk of acquiring this infection. Trichomoniasis This is another type of infection, but a protozoan (a single-celled organism) causes it. The infection is usually spread by sexual contact, but it can also be contracted by sharing towels or bathing suits. This infection results in a yellow or green discharge that has a foul odor. Pain, inflammation, and itching are also common symptoms, although some people don’t experience any symptoms. Yeast Infection A yeast infection is a fungal infection that produces white, cottage cheese-like discharge in addition to burning and itching sensations. The presence of yeast in the vagina is normal, but its growth can multiply out of control in certain situations. The following may increase your likelihood of yeast infections: stress diabetes birth control pill use pregnancy antibiotics (especially prolonged use over 10 days) Gonorrhea and Chlamydia Gonorrhea and chlamydia are sexually transmitted infections can produce an abnormal discharge, which is often yellow, greenish, or cloudy. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease Pelvic inflammitory disease is an infection that is often spread by sexual contact. It occurs when bacteria spreads up the vagina and into other reproductive organs. It may produce a heavy, foul-smelling discharge.

Detoxification Through Ayurveda

Detoxification Through Ayurveda

You might have indulged in various types of detox regimes, but have you tried the Ayurvedic detox yet? This regime is short, simple and very easy to follow but the benefits it proffers are not possibly limited to a particular aspect of well-being. You can undertake it at any time of the year, but it would be extremely advantageous if you select the juncture between two seasons when your body has already got an alert about the imminent change in the surroundings.

The importance of detoxifying the body: The practice of cleansing the mind and body is considered to be one of the most crucial aspects of Ayurvedic lifestyle. It offers a valuable way of cleaning away all the accumulated toxicity and wastes from the tissues, which ensures optimal health. Modern lifestyle that leaves people stressed out at most times makes it even more necessary to include an overall detoxifying regime in the fitness routine. Today people have to undergo an endless variety of harmful inputs such as environmental pollution, junk food, sedentary lifestyle, psychological stress and anxiety and unresolved emotions. If they are allowed to accumulate within the body, over time they can be deposited in the tissue, and compromise on healthy living.

Advantages of taking part in detoxifications: A simple detoxifying plan that incorporates eating mono-diet, fresh fruits, drinking plenty of fluids in the form of water and other detoxifying fluids along with taking Triphala in the evening helps in supporting the digestion as well as the detoxifying system present within the body. It can also alleviate the physiology by slowing down the flood of damaging inputs and by allowing the body to rest and repair itself.
A plain cleanse can aid in:

  • Improving digestion and metabolic function
  • Promoting regular as well as balanced elimination
  • Supporting the maintenance of proper body weight
  • Nurturing the improved sense of vitality, energy and enthusiasm of life
  • Encouraging a balanced rest cycle
  • Promoting improvement of overall health

When you are willing to take part in Ayurvedic detoxification, it is important that you prepare your body well before the schedule and expose yourself to as less amount of stress as possible. It is advised to take a break from the social sites and electronic devices as they increase the stimulation and don't allow the mind to rest. If you have a habit of drinking or smoking, it is necessary to bid a temporary goodbye to them and follow the detoxification regime as suggested by your physician as closely as possible. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an ayurveda.

Hello, You need to get an USG done to check for foetal viability and heart beat or early placental separation. Tranexamic acid will not help but progesterone support should have been started and complete bed rest is indicated.

My son of 50 days old is not getting sufficient Breast milk from his mother. Is there any medicine to increase Breast milk for my child or any other powder food can take. Mother is 26 year old.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
General Physician, Bangalore
Sir, Mother has to increase water intake, may be 3 to 4 litres per day. No restrictions should be made. She has to suckle the child frequently. She has to sit and feed, later should BURP the child for 10 minutes. Let her eat lot of fruits and vegetables. Food should not be restricted. she has to eat good home made food when ever she is hungry. It is very important. Let her put protein powder in milk, at least 3 times per day. Proteins are important. She can take, eat Non veg. items also. She has to eat food, 5 to 6 times per day. This is because, the entire nutrition for the Baby is from mother. If she follows this, she should get good response within 1 week. Lastly, She SHOULD like to feed. she should not have any stress. Get back to me if there is no response within 1 week.

After HCG shot and ovulation my DGO prescribed progesterone 100 mg for 15 days starting from cycle day 16. For last two cycle I took NAC 600 mg and Clomid 50 mg along with Progesterone. After finishing 15 pills I got periods my within couple of days or sometimes on the day I finish it. I'm in progesterone pills for last 6 months. I thought it was the one that is barrier to get pregnant. Today is 2nd day of my periods and I ask about it to my DGO. She then prescribed me NAC and clomid. She said that she too has the same mind set in my case. For some women progesterone act as a hurdle for pregnancy. She quoted and asked me to come on day 11 for follicular study and hcg shot. So my doubt is. If I won't use progesterone this cycle. Does it delay my periods? For how many days the effect of pill remain in our body. Does it make any disturbance in this cycle? I asked it to my DGO. She said it may or may not delay periods. I'm posting here my query to avoid unwanted expectation due to delayed periods. Trying for more than a year after losing my precious baby on 14th week due to neural tube defect. I want him back soon. Enough is enough. Had a big gap. I too wanna enjoy motherhood. Please. I need your advice. Comfort me with your replies. Thank you in anticipation.

Pregnancy is possible only on one day of cycle, day of ovulation when ovum is released from ovary of woman. That is why couple normally wait for 12 to 24 cycles of unprotected sex around time of ovulation before going to Gynecologist or infertility specialist for further evaluation and advise. When you go to specialist lot of reports are done to rule out or confirm many factors. Assuming in you case other factors are ruled out (like semen of husband, post-coital test, open tubes, normal uterine lining) and treatment is going on for ovulation because that is the only factor- it takes long time as each cycle some treatment is tried and after proper ovulation with same treatment if pregnancy does not result, change in treatment happens. (Again important to consider that there are no other factors). If progesterone is given after ovulation it helps. You may go to MD like post-graduate Gynecologist or infertility specialist.

Relationship Between Sexually Direct Media and Sexually Risk Behaviors in Homosexuals

Relationship Between Sexually Direct Media and Sexually Risk Behaviors in Homosexuals

Older studies have indicated that viewing sexually direct media might be associated with sexual risk behaviors in men who have sex with men or homosexuas. However, most prior research has not explored this association cross-culturally or the potential influence that important a variable that is possibly predictive of the outcome under study might have on the association. The aim is to explore the association between self-reports of viewing Sexually explicit media depicting various sexual risk behaviors and engagement in sexual risk behaviors after controlling for relevant a variable that is possibly predictive of the outcome under study in India.

200 hundred Men who have sex with men participated in a survey, Sexually direct media consumption was surprisingly frequent in Men who have sex with men in India. Viewing a larger proportion of Sexually direct media showing sexual risk behaviors was associated with a larger number of regular partners with whom Men who have sex with men or homosexuals reported engaging in sexual risk behaviors, but not with the number of casual partners. HIV-related knowledge and seeking male sex partners were associated with the number of regular partners with whom homosexuals had engaged in sexual risk behaviors. Seeking sexual sensation, HIV-related knowledge, and seeking male sex partners were associated with the number of casual partners with whom Men who have sex with men had engaged in sexual risk behaviors.

Further research exploring the relation between Sexually explicit direct use and sexual health risk behaviors should considered important psychological and behavioral a variable that is possibly predictive of the outcome, as sexually transmitted infections are on the rise in our country.
