So whatever oncologist n oncosurgeon tell you go with them have a faith in them. Chemo is used for killing the cells m radio is used for killing the metas.

No usually painful breasts is not suggestive of cancer. Usually it is related to hormonal changes and occurs before periods. However, if it persists then you need to see a gynaecologist for evaluation and treatment.

I am 30 years old and married. My mother-in-law as well as father-in-law had cancer. Mother-in-law had gallbladder cancer, she expired four years ago. Father-in-law had cancer in kidney which is operated but he further has tissues in his lungs which cannot be operated. My question is, is cancer heredity? Is there any chance that my husband might also have the problems? What are the symptoms to check or what precautions can we take?

M.Ch - Surgical Oncology, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Oncologist, Delhi
Yes cancer occurence may have a hereditary component and your husband is definitely at an increased risk of developing cancer than normal population, but it is not necessary that he develops it. Just be cautious, go in for regular checks may be annual with an oncologist.

Colostomy is opening of intestines to bypass obstruction, it is not a radical treatment. If acute emergency then go for colostomy, otherwise first treat septicaemia with antibiotics then only go for surgery.

Colon Cancer - 5 Tips to Help You Fight Naturally!

MD, DYA, PGDCR

Colon Cancer - 5 Tips to Help You Fight Naturally!

According to the American Cancer Society and Colon Cancer Alliance, colon cancer, which is also referred to as colorectal cancer is regarded as the third most commonly diagnosed cancer type as well as the second most important reason of cancer death in the U.S. affecting both men and women. But thankfully, colon cancer can be prevented by changing the food habits.

It is also important to get regular screenings through colonoscopy, which will help you to determine the early or precancerous stage that can be treated with the removal of cancerous cells. Colorectal cancer is deemed to be cancer-related to the food habits and it can be prevented by correcting the same. Here are the top ways through which you can help your condition naturally:

  1. Reduce the amount of red meat consumption: Health studies reveal that people who eat red meat on a regular basis are more prone to developing colon cancer. This is because the chemicals required to digest this food damage the DNA material which in turn is the main reason behind the cause of cancer.
  2. Increase the amount of garlic intake: By consuming more garlic, you can reduce the risk of developing different types of cancer, particularly those of the gastrointestinal tract. Garlic is rich in anti-bacterial properties that can block the pathways of cancer causing elements and boost the repair as well as reduce the proliferation of cells. It is also high in selenium and sodium content which are beneficial for the overall health.
  3. Consume all types of plant antioxidants: The bright coloured fruits and vegetables, as well as herbs and spices, can greatly contribute to adding a wide array of antioxidants in your regular diet. Foods that are rich in anti-oxidants include carrots, pomegranates, cranberries, kale, broccoli, tomatoes, apples, cabbage, turmeric, sage, rosemary, saffron, purple and red grapes.
  4. Cook foods in olive oil: Olive oil is rich in anti-cancer properties and it helps in reducing bile acid and increasing the enzymes that can regulate the growth of the cells on the intestine lining so that tissues can be renewed. Antioxidant compounds called phenolics are present in olive oil and have also proven to be a cancer protective anti-oxidant.
  5. Increase the consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids: It has been reported by several types of research that a diet rich in Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce the occurrence of colon cancer and therefore you must eat a lot of salmon, cod, mackerel and sardines for decreasing the pro-inflammatory levels in your body.

These few alterations to your food habits can greatly help you in preventing colon cancer and you can consult your doctor for a detailed analysis and recommendation based on your individual health condition.

How to clean a smokers lungs? What are the precautionary measures to avoid lung cancer & throat cancer?

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. First and foremost, one must quit smoking. Again, it does not necessarily mean that everybody who smokes gets cancer. Smoking does increase the risk, though, of getting cancer. Simultaneously, it exposes one to various lung ailments too. I would advise you to go for a healthy and balanced diet and maintain a regular and active lifestyle with due focus on daily exercises, yoga/ 'pranayam' (/breath control), de-stressing and relaxation. Try including more of deep green leafy vegetables, whole grain cereals, omega-3 fats and fresh seasonal fruits in your daily diet. Preferably, go for a mediterranean diet for maximum benefits. Staying well hydrated is important too. Dietary supplementation of B vitamins especially vitamin B6, in contextually appropriate doses, is known to reduce the risk of lung cancer. The above-mentioned mostly stands good for throat/ oral cancer too. The dietary guidelines apart, including fresh drumstick, neem, cranberry etc is known to contribute to chemo-prevention too. Additionally, do take care of your oral hygiene on a day-to-day basis. Would recommend a regular dental / ENT check up (every 6 months) too, to be on a safer side. Hope this helps. Do take care and all the very best. Sincerely,

Prostate size does not matter until and unless associated with lower urinary tract symptoms. Do not go with the report, you may need medicines if you develop symptoms due to that enlarged prostate. Sometym patient with prostate size 80 cc may not have any symptoms and few with 24 cc have severe troublesome symptoms. So do not focus on what report says. You can go for surgery for gall stones.

I am 51 years old. For the past 24 years I am struggling with diabetes. I always used to drink coffee, tea with sugar substitute by using SUGAR FREE natural. TWO days back, one dietician told me" don't use Sugar free" because it will lead to Cancer. Is it true? Is there any pool proof research result? Shall I continue to use? Kindly advise.

Mr. Lybrate-user, sugar substitutes like saccharine, aspartame and sucralose (splenda), all these are equally bad. The recent studies on sucralose confirm that it affects intestinal bacteria, reduces them by 50 % and leads to various problems. The earlier ones like aspartame is also not safe. Whether cancers are caused or not is a different matter, but better to avoid them. These lead to weight gain and contribute metabolic syndrome. Please make habit to avoid artficial sweeteners completely. Thanks.

I have a small lump on the nipple of my left breast, on the down-left side, roughly for about 2 years. I also have sharp stinging pains in both the breasts, mostly left breast, roughly for about a year and a half. What do I do?

MBBS, MS - General Surgery, MRCS (Edinburgh), Fellowship In Breast Surgery, Fellowship In Onco-plastic Breast Surgery
Oncologist, Gurgaon
Hi Between the age of 15-25 years, benign (non cancerous) lumps in the breast (fibroadenomas) are very common. They are usually painless but can sometimes cause pain. Another cause of breast pain could be the hormonal changes during your periods. You should get an ultrasound of the breast, to make sure that the lump is not suspicious. If it is a small fibroadenoma, it can be managed non-operatively.
