Blood Clots In Legs: How Can You Prevent Them?

MS - Orthopaedics
Orthopedist, Indore
Blood Clots In Legs: How Can You Prevent Them?

A blood clot in the leg is termed as Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT. This blood clot can be fatal, because it usually blocks the passage of blood to the heart by damaging the one way valves of the veins. This can also reach other organs like the lungs, in which situation the case becomes complicated and may also lead to death. There are various ways of preventing the onset of these clots. Follow these points to know more.

  1. Blood Thinners: Prolonged hospital stay and a major surgery like joint replacement can lead to blood clots in the legs or DVT. Therefore, it is imperative to ask your doctor about a prescription for blood thinners, which can help in better blood flow despite minimal motion in the legs or stiffness.
  2. Compressions Stockings: If you have been in the hospital for a prolonged period or suffering from leg paralysis, then the risk of blood clots is greater than most others. You can make use of compression stockings, which will help in preventing clots by holding the area tight so that the blood is forced to pump and flow. These should be used every time you are admitted to the hospital.
  3. Exercise: It is important to keep moving in case you are travelling in a long flight that is over four hours long. Also, you can try certain mild exercises, in case you have a long standing condition of pain or cramping in the leg muscles and joints. From simple toe flexes to muscle strengthening exercises like the heel or towel hook, you can ensure that the tightening action makes your muscle firm so that the blood clots do not have a chance to form. You may also need to lose weight in case you are overweight so that you can alleviate the risk of these clots.
  4. Water: Staying hydrated is something that we all need to follow in any case, but it is especially important if you are risk of developing blood clots in the legs. Drinking plenty of fluids is a natural way of thinning the blood, especially if you have been in bed or travelling for prolonged periods.
  5. Loose Fitting Clothing: You may want to wear loose fitting clothing when you are travelling or in the hospital so that you do not end up unnecessarily compressing an area in a way that will be detrimental for the blood flow there. Wearing loose clothing ensures that the blood flow carries on as per its normal routine without any blockages.

It is important to remember the above points so that you keep blood clots in the legs at bay.

I am 66 yrs old. Some rashes seen on right thigh, & on waist, juston belt area since last one week. There is pain like cut on the whole right thigh. Is it harpis? what are the treatment?

MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
Dear sir, what you are experiencing is probably just some rashes due to sweating and friction in summers. If you have never had a history of such rashes before, it probably is not herpes. However get yourself checked by a dermatologist to be sure. Till then you may keep the area dry with any antifungal powder and expose it to air as much as you can.

How Depriving Your Body of Sleep Can Harm Your Sexual Health?

MD - Psychiatry, Diploma in Psychological Medicine, MBBS

How Depriving Your Body of Sleep Can Harm Your Sexual Health?

Many men claim to get by on 4 to 5 hours of sleep a day, but robbing the body of its required sleep has a number of side effects. The human body requires a minimum of 8 hours of sleep a day. There are two main reasons men don't get enough sleep: intentionally staying awake late at night and sleep disorders, such as insomnia, sleep apnea etc.

Here's how depriving your body of sleep can harm your sexual health:

  1. Less testosterone: The male body produces testosterone while he sleeps. When the body does not get adequate sleep and rest, it produces less testosterone. As the insomnia continues, this situation worsens. This leads to a low sex drive and poor libido.
  2. Low self esteem: Testosterone also influences the way the body stores fat and hence less testosterone can also lead to gynecomastia. This is condition where male bodies develop breasts as a result of an increase in body fat. Lowered testosterone levels in a male body also lead to reduced muscle strength and hence an overall lower sense of well-being.
  3. Erectile dysfunction: Inadequate sleep can result in obstructive sleep apnea. This is linked to the lowered levels of testosterone in the body as patients with sleep apnea do not reach the stage of REM sleep when testosterone is produced. Thus, sleep apnea can lead to erectile dysfunction where a man is unable to get or maintain an erection while having sex.
  4. Low sperm count: Testosterone plays an important role in sperm production. The relation between the two is simple: the higher the testosterone levels; the more the body produces sperm. Thus, if you do not get adequate sleep, your sperm count can be affected leading to infertility.
  5. Sexual misunderstanding: Sleep deprivation can affect your decision making and understanding of the other person's intentions. Thus, if you haven't slept properly, you are more likely to make uncalled for sexual advances and misunderstand your partner's sexual expectations.
  6. Accelerates aging: The body sheds dead cells and grows new cells while it sleeps. Thus, if the body is deprived of adequate sleep, the gaining process is accelerated. Not only does this bring on an early onset of wrinkles but it also lowers your sexual drive. Lowered testosterone may also lead to early balding.
  7. Fatigue: If the body doesn't get its required rest, you start the day feeling tired instead of refreshed. As the day goes on, this tiredness increases and is accompanied by irritability and aggression. When you're in such a bad moon and constantly tired the chances of wanting to be physically intimate with another person decrease. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Sexologist.

Hello- There are many possible reasons for oligozoospermia: Partial obstruction of the ducts through which sperm travel from the testes to the urethra. Abnormalities in testicular blood vessels (varicocele) Epididymis conditions Hormone disorders Trauma or inflammation in testicles Abnormalities in semen brought on by the consumption of certain medications, alcohol, tobacco or drugs Activities which increase testicular temperature (saunas, tight-fitting clothing, etc.) The most suitable treatment for patients with oligozoospermia is surely Ayurveda. Ayurveda has presented a distinct branch that deals with defective semen and spermatogenesis along with sexual potency. So its best to consult a Ayurveda doctor. You will surely be benefited.

Hi Doctor, I have a small concern related to my sexual life. I ejaculate very late compared to my wife. Even after her 3-4 times ejaculation, I still stay intact. Means I have to rely on masturbation. Is it normal? Is this due to any improper diet? I work in night shift. I smoke 2-3 times a day. Drinks 2-3 times a month. But overall my wife happy that she is satisfied. I feel happy when she is satisfied. Still would like to know is it normal?

Its delayed ejaculation(DE). .Psychological causes for DE can occur due to a traumatic experience. Cultural or religious taboos can give sex a negative connotation. Anxiety and depression can both suppress sexual desire, which may result in DE as well. Relationship stress, poor communication, and anger can make DE worse. Disappointment in sexual realities with a partner compared to sexual fantasies can also result in DE. Often, men with this problem can ejaculate during masturbation but not during stimulation with a partner. Certain chemicals can affect the nerves ..consult me by clicking on consult option for homoepathic treatment
