"For Sinus and Nose problems, try taking steam inhalation for 3 times a day. To know how to take steam, please read instructions below to know - how to take steam inhalation for best results. If problem is not solved in 2-3 days, you may need additional medicines. Techniques to steam 1) Boil a pot of water. 2) Pour water into a large flat pan or bowl. If you use a casserole, water will remain warm for longer duration. 3) Place your head over the bowl at a distance of 1 feet. 4) Cover your head and bowl with a large towel (like a tent), take long breath through your nose and breath out through mouth. Take a break every 1-2 minutes until you feel relatively cooler. Do it for 10 minute twice or thrice a day. If you feel that the treatment is getting too much for you, raise the towel so that fresh air is brought into the area and breathe through your mouth a couple of times and then resume Take care - Take all precautions while dealing with hot water. Also, keep children away and wan others that you are dealing with boiling hot water. Other way is - by an Electric steamer available in market and take steam through it. I have rhinosinusitis. What precautions I have to take for it. And what are the home remedies to reduce it. And what type of food we have to decline.

MBBS
General Physician,
do warm saline gargle regularly. have homemade freshly prepared lemon juice which is rich in vitamin C thereby increasing your body autoimmune system which prevents infection. do war!m saline gargle regularly.

I am 27 years old. From last 4 months my smell sense has decreased and consulted a doctor. He prescribed for CT Scan and after seeing scan report he told that I am suffering from nasal polyps (Allergy) has increased in all sinuses and has to do surgery by endoscopy method. Is it compulsory to go for surgery or it can be treated by medicine.

DORL, MBBS
ENT Specialist, Faridabad
Sinusitis, is nothing but a physiological disorder of nose which led by malfunctioning of aerodynamics of nose (temporary sinusitis, secondly it is because of repeated infections of the sinus (permanent sinusitis) sinuses regulations and air conditioning of the air which we breathe and to get the benefit of above we must have normal, well sized opened sinusitis and hence nose breathing is required, those who breathe from mouth, they have tendency to get more throat and lungs infections. Recurrent sinus infection, pollution, poor diet, spicy food, long term steam inhalation from nose, and allergies leads to thick discharge from nose. This thick mucus if stays in the sinuses, it leads to irritation of the sinus skin which is mucosa and this go on growing hence leads to permanent sinusitis this extra growth is called nasal polyps this is where patient needs surgical correction. If patient comes to nose surgeon at right time, doctor can revert his/her symptoms and surgery can be abandoned. But most of the time patient comes to us after trying everything which he/she hears from neighbors, tv channels, ayurvedic or homeopathic treatment. Sinusitis if patient does not take serious steps to correct might lead to cardiac symptoms, lung diseases, etc. Once there are nasal polyps you have to go for surgery immediately.

My 18 year old girl friends nose point gets bulky and round on nose tip also one nostrils svelen inside a round in nose which obstruction breathing Pl. Help what to do why this happens. Thanks.

DORL, MBBS
ENT Specialist, Faridabad
For bulky nose this has to undergo plastic surgery and for the obstruction I need to tell you few things the bone of he nose gets deviated this leads to nose breathing problem if a person suffering from nasal obstruction along with sinusitis and mild to moderate nasal allergies it means most probably he is suffering from dns (deviated nasal septum. Nasal obstruction is because of the deviated portion of the nasal septum (this is the bony partition of the nose cavity. Allergies are because of the hampered muco-ciliary mechanism (normally mucus is produced in the nose to moisten our nose cavity, oral cavity, and help food bolus to move downward, this mucus is basically moves on the cilia of the nasal mucosa) this mechanism gets hampered and mucus start accumulating in the nose and sinus cavity which is why thick mucus comes from nose in patients of nose obstruction and person develops sinusiits. When a surgeon removes the nasal septum deviation has not been removed properly the symptoms persists, and patient thinks that the nose bone has again regrown. It is not because of regrowth but because of half surgery done or due to the non removal of the deviation (reason can be many) nowadays nasal septal deviation can be removed endoscopically.

Hello Doctor my son is 3 year old he is suffering from sneezing. What I should take care of him.

MBBS
General Physician,
Baby having sneezing problem may be due to exposure to old climate and could be allergic to envirnement particle so you have to see that the child is not exposed to cold climate. Give plenty of water and fluid to drink. Best thing to consult a child specialist to rule out any rhinitis problem.

MBBS, cc USG
General Physician, Gurgaon
If symptoms are sneezing, running nose, blocked nose 1. Take proper rest/ lot of fluids 2. Take proper home made diet. 3. Steam inhalation carefully by steam inhaler twice a day for 2-3 days frequent/ continuous cough cold may be because of many reasons like: 1. Any ent problem like dns polyp sinusitis 2. Low immunity 3. Allergic condition so you need to consult ENT doctor for proper examination and further management.

Can you suggest some medicine for stopping snoring, as my wife snoring whole night.

BHMS, DEMS
Homeopath, Pune
Hello Lybrate User, Snoring is a natural occurrence due to the lack of freely moving air through the nose and throat during sleep. Try these natural solutions and lifestyle changes, which may help her to stop snoring - * change sleeping position - sleeping on sides instead of lying on back, may help to prevent snoring. * lose weight - if she has gained weight and started snoring, then by losing weight may help her to get rid from snoring. * Drink plenty of fluids - secretions in your nose become stickier when you are dehydrated, this can create more snoring,do drink plenty of water. * Adjust your pillows - elevating your head can help open up airways and make Breathing easier. * Avoid dairy products and big meals late at night. * Try regular throat and tongue exercises. Take care.

Hi lybrate-user, I can understand your concern. I would advise you to go for a second opinion here, with all your reports. You at least need anti-anginal medicine, including anti-platelet/ anti-coagulant therapies, if you are hesitating to go for angioplasty. Simultaneously, keep your diet and lifestyle streamlined, focus on a mediterranean diet pattern. You must cease smoking, if any, completely. Your lipid profile needs to be managed too. Do focus on anxiety/ stress reduction as well, through regular yoga, meditation, breathing exercises, anxiolytics etc all. Hope this helps. Take care and all the very best. Sincerely, Dr. Pritam (nd) bbsr.
