Why and When Should I Go for HPV Test?

Panchkula & Delhi

Ask Free Question
Persistent infection of the uterine cervix with high risk human papilloma virus (hpv) leads to development of cervical cancer. Infection with hpv is common especially in sexually active young women, most infections are transient and spontaneously clear within 1 to 2 years without causing cancer. These transient infections may cause temporary changes in cervical cells. If a cervical infection with high risk hpv type persists the cellular changes can eventually develop into more severe precancerous lesions. If pre cancerous lesions are not treated, they can progress to cancer. Thus, an hpv dna test is recommended to identify the high risk types of hpv.

Why is pap smear done?

An hpv test is done to:

Check for high-risk types of human papillomavirus (hpv) in women who had a pap test that showed abnormal cervical cells called atypical squamous cells (ascus). An hpv test can help look for one or more high-risk types of hpv.
Check for hpv in women older than age 30 as part of screening for abnormal cervical cells.
Help check for abnormal cervical cells after treatment of a high-risk hpv infection.

When should one get screened for cervical cancer?

American cancer society does not recommend using hpv dna test to screen for cervical cancer in females under 30. This is because females in their twenties who are sexually active are much more likely (than older females) to have a hpv infection that goes away on its own. For these young females, results of this test are not as significant and may be confusing.

For females age 30 and older, pap & hpv co testing is less likely to miss an abnormality (i. E. Lower false negative rate than pap testing alone. It also lengthens the screening interval to 5 years and still allows abnormalities to be detected in time to treat them.

Women of age >65 yrs who have had adequate screening history or those who have had total hysterectomy do not need any further screening.

Hpv test

Is hpv test as safe and effective as pap smear?

The advantage of the hpv test is that the pap test misses a fair number of carcinomas as it has a lower sensitivity. Studies have also shown that a negative hpv test is better at predicting that a woman will be free of lesions for the next three years than a negative pap test.

And while the experience for the patient is the same for both tests, the hpv test requires less material from the cervix to detect an infection so there's less concern that a sample will be inadequate.

How is the hpv test performed?
Before an hpv test, do not douche, use tampons, or use vaginal medicines for at least 48 hours.
In the hpv test, a doctor takes a swab of cells from the cervix, just as for the pap test. The cells are then analyzed in a laboratory. The genetic material (dna) of the hpv virus is studied. This test can identify 13 or 14 of the high-risk hpv types associated with cervical cancer. Hpv test results are generally available in 1 to 2 weeks.

You may have a small amount of vaginal bleeding or gray-green discharge after this test.

Hi, there are several common causes of vaginal itching, burning, and irritation, including: bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, sexually transmitted infections, menopause, chemoocal irritans (including creams, douches, condoms, contraceptive foams, laundry detergents, soaps, scented toilet paper, and fabric softeners can irritate the vagina and vulva), lichen sclerosis. Here are a few tips for preventing and treating vaginal irritation at home: avoid scented pads or toilet paper, creams, bubble bath, feminine sprays, and douches. Use water and a plain, unscented soap to regularly clean your external genital area. But don't wash more than once a day. Doing so can increase dryness. Always wipe from front to back after having a bowel movement. Wear cotton panties (no synthetic fabrics), and change your underwear every day. Do not douche. Change the diapers of infant girls regularly. Use condoms during sexual intercourse to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. If you are experiencing vaginal dryness, use a vaginal moisturizer. Apply a water-based lubricant before having sex. Avoid sexual intercourse until your symptoms improve. Don't scratch -- you can further irritate the area. Vaginal irritation will often get better on its own. However, if the irritation continues, is severe, or comes back after treatment consult a gynaecologist.

1. Hair Oil Massage
The first step that you can take to reduce hair loss is to massage your scalp with appropriate hair oil. Proper hair and scalp massage will increase blood flow to the hair follicles, condition the scalp, and enhance the strength of your hair’s roots. It will also promote relaxation and reduce feelings of stress.
You can use hair oils like coconut or almond oil, olive oil, amla oil, or others.
1. Massage any of the hair oils mentioned above to your hair and scalp by applying light pressure with your fingertips.
2. Do this at least thrice a week.
2. Indian Gooseberry
For natural and fast hair growth, you can use Indian gooseberry, also known as amla. Indian gooseberry is rich in vitamin C, of which a deficiency in the body can cause hair loss.
The anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and the exfoliating properties present in Indian gooseberry can help maintain a healthy scalp and promote hair growth.

1. Mix one tablespoon each of Indian gooseberry or amla pulp and lemon juice.
2. Massage your scalp with the mixture thoroughly. Cover your hair with a shower cap.
3. Leave it on overnight and shampoo your hair in the morning.
3. Fenugreek
Fenugreek, also known as methi, is highly effective in treating hair loss. Fenugreek seeds contain hormone antecedents that enhance hair growth and help rebuild hair follicles. They also contain proteins and nicotinic acid that stimulate hair growth.
1. Soak one cup of fenugreek seeds in water overnight.
2. In the morning, grind them to make a paste.
3. Apply the paste to your hair and cover with a shower cap. After about 40 minutes, rinse your hair.
4. Follow this remedy every morning for a month.
.
4. Aloe Vera
Aloe vera contains enzymes that directly promote healthy hair growth. Also, its alkalizing properties can help bring the scalp and hair’s pH to a more desirable level, which can greatly promote hair growth.
Regular use can also relieve scalp itching, reduce scalp redness and inflammation, add strength and luster to hair, and alleviate dandruff. Both aloe vera gel and juice will work.
1. Apply aloe vera gel or juice onto the scalp.
2. Leave it on for a few hours and then wash it off with lukewarm water.
3. Repeat the process three to four times a week.
You can also consume one tablespoon of aloe vera juice daily on an empty stomach to enjoy better hair growth.

Hi. I am 31 year female having problem in conceiving. I have balanced translocation of 2 and 4 with large break point...
Hi, The balanced translocation between 2 and 4 is very rare. Normally for any parental translocation infertility, miscarriages and baby getting affected are slightly more than the normal population. The Genetic counselling doctor will be able to give you the details. If they predict that the baby will be affected then you have to go for donor egg with husband sperm IVF program. If they predict only some percentage will be affected you can rry IVF with pre implantation genetic analysis where they put only the genetically healthy embryos into your uterus after IVF. Please consult a good geneticist in your area and then consult an IVF specialist.

What Causes a Uterine Prolapse?

Causes and symptoms of uterine prolapse

The uterus is a muscular structure held in place inside your pelvis with the help of muscles, ligaments, and tissues. These muscles weaken in women due to pregnancy, childbirth or delivery complications and can lead to severe complications. One such complication is a uterine prolapse. Uterine prolapse occurs when the uterus sags or slips from its normal position into the vaginal canal.

The causes of uterine prolapse are varied and include:

- Delivering a large baby
- Pregnancy
- Difficulty in labor and delivery
- Reduction in estrogen levels post menopause
- Traumatic childbirth
- Loss or weakening of the pelvic muscle
- Conditions which lead to increased pressure in the abdominal area such as a chronic cough, straining, pelvic tumors or accumulation of fluid in the abdomen
- Loss of external support due to major surgery in pelvic area

Uterine prolapse can be complete or incomplete depending on how far the uterus sags into the vagina. Women who have minor uterine prolapse may not have any visible symptoms. However, if the condition worsens, it manifests itself in visible signs.

Symptoms of moderate or severe prolapse are:

1. A feeling of fullness or pressure in your pelvis when you sit
2. Seeing the uterus or cervix coming out of the vagina
3. Vaginal bleeding or increased discharge
4. Painful sexual intercourse
5. Recurrent bladder infections
6. Continuing back pain with difficulty in walking, urinating and moving your bowels

Without proper attention, the condition can cause impairments in the bowel, and can also affect bladder and sexual function.
