Low Back Pain - Physiotherapy

Patients suffering from most types of low back pain often need physical therapy as an conservative (nonsurgical) treatment option before considering other more aggressive treatments, including back surgery. The goals of physical therapy are to decrease back pain, increase function, and teach the patient a maintenance program to prevent future back problems.

Common forms of physical therapy include:

 

  1. Passive physical therapy (modalities), which includes things done to the patient, such as heat application, ice packs and electrical stimulation. For example, a heating pad may be applied to warm up the muscles prior to doing exercising and stretching, and an ice pack may be used afterward to soothe the muscles and soft tissues. Interferential therapy reduces pain and inflammation while ultrasonic therapy helps to accelerate the regeneration of new healing cells.
  2. Active physical therapy, which focuses on specific exercises and stretching. For most low back pain treatments, active exercise is the focus of the physical therapy program in later stages for strengthening of muscles.

This back pain is due to no back exercise. Due to this muscle get stiff. When suddenly you get move fast that time this stiff muscle get break and pain start. In ayurved there is mentioned one procedure KATI BASTI .DO THIS FOR FIVE DAYS WITH MEDICATED OIL if you want to do it you should do it under doctor observation. So consult ayurvedic doctor near you. You will definitely get good result.

Hi morning walker (machine) is not going to be helpful. You need strengthening exercise, better start exercise under supervision of physiotherapist. Best wishes.

Pain in the arm/hand can result from a number of factors. Abnormalities or injury of the skin, nerves, bones, joints, blood vessels, and soft tissues of the arm can all result in pain. Arm pain may be the result of referred pain from another part of the body. Please go to a physiotherapist to assess and treat the underlying condition. If pain is caused by an activity, modify or stop the activity. Rest the arm and resume activity gradually. Monitor the response to the activity. Pain experienced in the right arm is usually not serious, but when it is coupled with other symptoms like pain in the leg or tightness of the chest, it may be more serious. Try some home remedies: ice will reduce pain and swelling. Apply ice or cold packs immediately to prevent or minimize swelling. Apply the ice or cold pack for 10 to 20 minutes, 3 or more times a day. Elevate the painful area on pillows while applying ice and anytime you are sitting or lying down. Try to keep the area at or above the level of your heart to help minimize swelling. Apply heat and begin gentle exercise with the aid of moist heat to help restore and maintain flexibility. Some experts recommend alternating between heat and cold treatments. Gently massage or rub the area to relieve pain and encourage blood flow. Do not massage the area if it causes pain. Do not smoke or use other tobacco products. Smoking slows healing because it decreases blood supply and delays tissue repair. Please consult a physiotherapist for detail assessment and management of your arm pain. Best wishes.

What to see in Back Pain lumbar spine MRI
A variety of trends have increased the use of MRI in evaluating the spine - more sports activity, increase in obesity rates, and we've remained much more active into our later years than previous generations.

If you've injured your back or have chronic back pain, your doctor will probably first order an x-ray. After an x-ray, an MRI may be needed to evaluate the internal structures of the lumbar spine.

An MRI of the lumbar spine will evaluate:

Bones

A lumbar spine MRI will include the lumbar vertebral bodies, lamina, facets, spinous process and parts of the lower thoracic spine and the upper sacral spine. The lumbar spine MRI can detect bone fractures, tumors, infection and evaluate post-surgical changes. An MRI can also determine the extent of degenerative changes (arthritis) and be used for pre-operative planning for spinal fusion.

Discs

Lumbar spine MRIs are very good at looking at the discs between your vertebral bodies. A lumbar spine MRI can detect disc flattening, bulges, herniations, and infection (aka discitis).

Spinal Canal and Neural Foramina

Spinal nerves travel down through the spinal canal and leave at each level of the lumbar spine. The nerves leave the canal through holes called the neural foramina. The canal and these exit points can be blocked and cause pain or leg and foot weakness.

Conus and Nerve Roots

The conus is the end of the spinal cord - it looks like a cone with many nerve roots extending from it. A lumbar spine MRI is very good at detecting tumors, inflammation or impingement on these structures.

Soft Tissues

This refers to the muscles and tissues around your lumbar spine. The lumbar spine MRI can detect infections, fluid collections and tumors of these structures.

Your Lumbar Spine MRI Scan

A lumbar spine MRI generally takes about 20-30 minutes or so to complete. If you are going for one, wear loose comfortable clothing and remember to remove all metal (jewelry, phones, rings, etc) before going into the MRI scan room. If you've had surgery or have a history of cancer, you'll probably have the test done with MRI contrast.

Try changing her sleeping position every 2 hours a must. Give plenty of talcum-powder on the bed-sheet she is lying too. Clean the area with Savlon/Calendula Q daily. For further queries get back to me.

A checkup must of vit d and calcium levels sit straight. Maintain your posture. Avoid long sitting. Avoid toward bending. Heat fermentation and do stretching exercise.

dear shailu, nothing to worry about it, its just nerve sensation. if you take TENS therapy depending on your body condition you can see improvement soon. take tens therapy for 1 month for complete reduction of pain.

Emergency please. My mom was very ok till night but all of a sudden in the dawn c is no able to straighten her left leg. C can pull it up easily but when c is trying to stretch c is having severe pain. Her knee is little bit swollen but c dsnt remember getting hurt nywhere all of a sudden in dawn c finds c is having difficulty nd pain in fully stretching it. Please docs urgent advice needed.

Put the ice massage or cold icepack at knee joint for 5-7mins twice a day and take advice of doctor to check the movement of affected joint to rule out exact cause. Relax it's not a big problem, can be due to age related knee problem or knee joint muscle or ligaments strain.

change your work environment: choose correct height of chair, support your back fully upto neck, sit in chair by supporting your thighs fully, place your feet completely supported in floor, rest your forearms during typing or writing, do not lean over table you work, take periodical relaxation from work place. do regular free exercises in morning. avoid cushion beds, bend your knees with a pillow under knees while sleeping. give hot water fermentation for back pain.

Shoulder pain can be a result of injury or disease of the shoulder joint. Injury can affect any of the ligaments, bursae, or tendons surrounding the shoulder joint. Injury can also affect the ligaments, cartilage, menisci and bones of the joint. Some minor shoulder pain can be treated at home. Icing the shoulder for 15 to 20 minutes, three or four times a day for two to three days can help reduce pain. Use an ice bag or wrap ice in a towel (putting ice directly on your skin can cause frostbite). Rest the shoulder and avoid any movements that might cause pain. Simple shoulder exercises can help to stretch and strengthen muscles and rotator cuff tendons. A physiotherapist can show you how to do them properly. Please consult a physiotherapist for detail assessment and management of your condition. Best wishes.

It appears that your job requirements is of long standing. This may be the cause of your back problem. Do hot fermentation and apply pirox gel locally. Hard plinth bed is must.

For your leg pain try icing, do it for 20-30 minutes every 3 to 4 hours for 2 to 3 days, or until the pain is gone, together with reduced mileage or rest. Addressing the causes is likely to include ensuring that shoes have adequate cushioning and stability take anti-inflammatory painkillers. Do range-of-motion exercises. Go to physiotherapist to identify and treat issues in your legs or walking mechanics that may be causing pain. A therapist can also help ease the pain and guide your return to normal life. I'm 17 years now and 11 weeks back I had arthroscopic acl reconstruction using arthrex tight rope and abs button. I've been jogging, cycling and a free more exercises. Could you give me a schedule for what exercises I am allowed to do now and what can I add as time passes. I also play football.

It's good that you're following your doctor's advise on exercises regimen as it is 11 weeks old to strengthen your knee muscles you can walk inside the water pool till your waist level to and fro and zig zag walking and free exercises of flexion and extension exercises on advice of your surgeon operated for about 20 min in alternative days best wishes.

Kindly show me a photograph of the affected part. Rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick matress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Do hot fomantation. Paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. You will need other supportive medicines also. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, contact me again. Do not ignore. It could be beginning of a serious problem.
