5 Ways to Fight Depression If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. 1.Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation — can also help people with depression feel better. 2.Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3.Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5. Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. If you are happy with these answers please click on "useful” link so that I can know my efforts are not wasted. If you want more clarifications or prescription for medicines consult me on this site to ask me directly and not in open questions session It's not easy to say exactly what causes depression and anxiety – it's different for everyone. Sometimes a difficult time in you or your mates' life can set off depression or anxiety, sometimes it's caused by a combination of things that has built up over time and sometimes, there's just no obvious cause at all.

I have weak memory. so, what should I do.?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist,
You may not have weak memory but there could be other factors affecting it. You may be under some stress, and I do not know if you are aware of it. Find out what this disturbance is all about and as you address it, memory and concentration will happily return to favor you. Do meet with a counselor, if your stress is too much. In the meantime please follow the suggested guidelines: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or calisthenics exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night?s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil or coconut oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. But you must have short term memory to convert it into long-term memory. So the emphasis must be in activating good short term memory, ideally and always. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that you and the family go for counseling too.

Hello I am Rahul 20year old. I have problem to hand practice. I want to leave this but I do not leave. If you have any suggestion than tell me and help me.

Masturbation is normal but not the addiction to it. The problem with addiction to this is that you may go on to prefer masturbation to heterosexual contact, even when you are married. That obviously would be an insult to your wife and will lead to a lot of conflict. Heterosexual contact is very wholesome and the physiology is made exactly for penile and vaginal contact. You will instead enjoy a poor replica of this and not know or care for the difference. The second thing that can happen with addiction is that it will become compulsive and will have no boundaries or limits, since it can be done all by yourself, whenever, wherever, and however too. The big problem a lot of children get into is the guilt around this. A useful way to discharge the energy is to get into contact games, or exercises, or even hobbies to channelize it.

I am 31 years. Old and I am suffering from OCD since my childhood I was took fluoxetine 60 mg per day when I am 18 years old. I was improved almost 90% but after that I leave the medicine. After some times ocd thoughts came again and I took so many medicines but not recover. Now I am taking paroxetine 37.50 mg and clomipramine 200 mg per day now I get some improvement in my ocd thoughts. Before few days my doctor suggest me a new medicine s-adenosyl l methionine 200 mg with my old medicines. So what can I do? is this extra medicine will work for me? please give me suggestion.

DPM, Msc Psychiatry, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Muzaffarpur
Hello arun, it would have been much better if you combine medication along with cognitive behaviour therapy and exposure and response prevention. You may consult your psychiatrist for some better anti obsessional drugs such as fluvoxamine along with clomipramine. But you should also work out personal plan such as to engage yourself in some other activities instead of following your obsessional thoughts. Your obsessional drive is result of continuous habit processes learnt over a long period of time, so in order to leave your old habit you have to learn some new and creative sort of activities. Arun, you have not mentioned what sort of obsessional drive do you have ; such as washing hands and feet frequently, rechecking locks etc. Treatment modalities vary depending upon situations. I hope your query must be solved.

How to treat anxiety? I want to cure and why my left side of stomach downward to chest is paining?

How to treat anxiety? I want to cure and why my left side of stomach downward to chest is paining?
You must go for counseling soon. Counseling will help in training you will skills and techniques to cope with the daily challenges in life and will give you a fair chance to manage your life. You must also develop your constitution to make it fit enough to cope with fear, felt many times unnecessarily. You may be taking normal fear and converting it into abnormal fear like anxiety and so on. Take care of the following: Mental stability can be achieved by learning a few skills in handling emotions in an appropriate manner. Stress management skills, which have a lot to do with expressing emotions, will need to be a major part of your recovery program. Emotionally you need the help of a counselor and that will help you tremendously to move from anxiety to normal fear. Please persevere and cooperate through all the support you need and you will come through successfully. Develop your body’s health by physical fitness through exercise, good rest (sleep), and a proper diet. Any way what you need to focus on is to do vigorous exercise of the aerobic kind for the heart’s fitness; meditation for the brain’s fitness; sleep for a well rested mind and body; a sound spiritual well being for good confidence and stability; and a diet with lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Vigorous exercise, especially of the callisthenic kind, will make your heart, which is a muscle, grow larger; and then your heart will need to beat less often and you will respond to the anxiety with a calmer disposition. If your mind, constitution, and your emotions are in check and fit, you will never be disturbed again. The earlier you tackle this, the easier it is going to be. You are young and you can treat your stomach disorder and anxiety at the same time with good results.

Hi there ~ maintaining a good sleep schedule may be helpful. There are some rules for sleep hygiene that will help with getting over the fact that your girlfriend is getting married and that you are heartbroken and this is just a passing phase. Do not linger in this" shit" if she has moved on you should too. Do not use over the counter medications or substances like alcohol to help you sleep. I will help with medication if you need to get over this passing phase.

Dear, watching porn videos occassionally is not a crime or you don't have to worry about that. If you watch many porn videos in a same day, then it can be called addiction. Are you addicted in that sense? also understand, this addiction is mind based. So instead of calling it an addiction, we call it impulse reaction. Impulse reaction is a mental disorder and not a mental disease. Psychotherapy should clear your impulse reaction and please stop worrying about it. Take care,

Counsellor cannot suggest medications. I can understand your husband is having mood disorder and also dependent on diazepam, which will worsen mood symptoms, also produce cognitive decline (early onest dementia), and personality changes. You need to consult a psychiatrist and give him appropriate antidepressants at the same time gradually weaning him off diazepam and giving alternate safe medication. All the best.

Dear lybrate user, welcome to lybrate. The duty of your mind is to think. You cannot control your mind's thinking. Once you just leave your mind without diversion, it always end up in negative territory. Over thinking leads to obsession, self talking and laziness. But certainly you can divert your thinking. You can make your mind to be always positive by engaging in creative activities, hobbies, games and passionate towards whatever you do. Thereby you can reduce your stress and tension also. Once you can do this, loss of proper sleep and stress also can be made normal. Take care.

I am 37 years old, happily married with two kids. I am a chartered account and working in a us based mnc in delhi at a good position. I live in a joint family with my old parents. For some time now, I have been facing a problem that is bothering me big time. I can? t easily focus on something that? s written or remember it. And this has been happening for at least couple of years. For eg I work with numbers day in day out but if you ask me some information (like sales of my company for the last month) it would be extremely difficult to recollect that for me. Another example that I could give which can give you some idea is, if I am reading something, I have to put lot of focus to read it otherwise even the text becomes just an image which I can? t read properly or remember. This doesn? t mean that I can? t see properly or my eyesight is weak but somehow my mind can? t comprehend. I remember everything that I have learnt over the years but I strongly feel that I am not able to add anything to my memory for the past two years. And because I don? t remember things easily when I am interacting with colleagues/seniors, many times I end up in a situation which is embarrassing like when I have to say that let me look up into my computer and get back to you. I am not saying that I need to be a superhero with excellent memory but I wasn? t like this earlier. I am sorry I am not sure if I have able to explain my problem properly but its growing day by day. I have a paunch with waist size of 38, my height is 5? 11? and weight is 90 kgs. I drink twice a week and don? t do any exercise at all.

Hi, dark circles might persist due to hereditary also. If any of your parents have it then you are bound to get them. Drink lots of water as dehydration also causes dark circles. If you have tried everything to get rid of them then start using concealer to hide them if you are getting frustrated. Otherwise accept them and put your energy in some positive activities.
