Hi am 27 years old I hv hypothyroidism. Taking dose of 100mcg and 150mcg alternatively. I have gained a lot of weight. How to I reduce my weight. I am already walking 6km daily bt not much improvement. My height is 158cm.

MBBS, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Mumbai
Your tsh values are in normal range with above dosage? hypothyroidism normally doesn't cause weight gain more than 4 kg. Your weight gain is may be related to diet. According to your height and weight and bmi you fall in obese 1 cat. You should give more attention on diet along with exercise. There are certain medication like metformin and orlistat that might help to loose weight but that needs prior clinical examination. You can consult your diabetologist or endocrinologist for the same.

I am 28 years old and 15 years to use insulin continuously. Please suggest me a tab instead of insulin

MD - Diabetology, Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS), MBBS
Endocrinologist, Kochi
If you are now 28 years old & have been using insulin for 15 years, you started insulin at 13 years of age. Right? if so, do you have type 1 diabetes? if yes, insulin is the only option for you. Unfortunately, there are no tablets to treat type 1 diabetes. You have to continue insulin, life long.

My daughter is 16 years old having hypothyroidism. Doctor said lifelong tablet should be taken. Is there any remedy to get rid of it permanently.

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine)
Endocrinologist, Delhi
Thyroid is a hormonal organ. Hormones are signals in our body which effect various vital processes of the body. You can link them to traffic lights for the smooth and safe flow of traffic in the body. Unfortunately due to several known and unknown reasons, some hormonal organs like thyroid start to underperform or over perform leading to hypo or hyper function respectively. When we prescribe medicine for hypothyroid patients - we just provide supplementation of deficient hormone in the body. We currently have no medicine to cure the thyroid gland - we just have medicine to fulfil the hormone that was supposed to be manufactured by the thyroid gland. Since the requirement is daily - that is why the medicine is given daily. Since the requirement is lifelong- thats why the medicine is lifelong!

I am 38-year-old unmarried hypothyroid 60 kg .First I was hyperthyroid in 2001 and was on Neomercazole. In 2005 two doses radio iodine taken. Then on 100 mcg eltroxin for 7 yrs. Then 125 mcg thyronorm till 2016. Now 125 mcg thyronorm 5 days and 100 mcg 2 days per week. I had some needle like growth near inner labia portion after radioiodine last dose. I treated it with thuja and nitric acid homoeo medicine then. It went out from inner side to outside labia. L continued thuja. Then it appeared all over. Later itching persisted on those parts and a lump remained on iñner side of labia with itching. Also had consistent white discharge from 2010. But after taking medicine from gynecologist white discharge subsided. But small bump and itching persisted with discomfort increasing during periods. A doctor diagnosed it as contact dermatitis from this site. So as a natural cure for it l tried apple cider vinegar on the lump and it disappeared but same growth now appeared on outside labia with itching. i apply apple cider vinegar and trying but itch and slight protrusion has not gone fully. Is there any remedy.

My Dad Is a diabetes patient now his sugar level is 15 milimole. Now doctor have suggested him to take insulin. Now question is if he start taking insulin and the sugar level comes in control then he need to continue it or not? While taking insulin if sugar level comes in control than he has to continue or stop taking insulin? Now Which Medicine Should He Take After Control?

MD - General Medicine, MBBS
General Physician, Karimnagar
Hello, to answer your question we need more data. Kindly let us know what medications your dad is using currently. Then we need some lab tests like hba1c which tells us our previous 3 months sugar control and serum creatinine, urine protein level. Then we need an opthal evaluation to rule out diabetic retinopathy. All these play a role to decide on the intensity of treatment patient needs. To answer your question when sugars are uncontrolled if we start insulin the dose that it requires to make sugar levels controlled decides whether we can get him back on medications and stop insulin or not. If the dose that he requires is more then he may have to be continued on insulin. If you people r not willing for the same then at least once insulin and once tablet may be made. Managing diabetes is a complex problem.
