Hi I'm Mukul I am 17 years old. I have a problem in concentration. My concentration power is very less whenever I try to read my mind starts thinking something else. What should I do to improve my concentration power is there any exercise or something I should try?

B.A. Psychology, M.A. Psychology, Ph. D - Psychology
Psychologist, Delhi
Dear Mukul, It is very common for a child your age to be distracted and lose concentration especially while studying. Usually our mind starts to wander in either the past, thinking about our friends, something that hurt us or it goes into the future -daydreaming , or generally it drifts into something related to what we are studying . To improve your concentration , you should set specific goals regarding what you have to study. While studying - read aloud so that the chances of being distracted are reduced. Make notes- points - write keywords. After reading answer questions related to the topic and then move on with the next topic. Some breathing exercises and meditation should help. Avoid the usage of electronic gadgets as much as possible - they are major distractions.

What you are going through is greaving. Loosing loved one is not easy to deal with emotionally. I am sorry for your loss. When you are greaving, your mind is continuously engaged in sad and disturbing thoughts and feeling of loss and perhaps guilt. When sadness over powers you it is difficult to feel any other feelings. Even feeling happy makes you feel guilty and uneasy. Slow but effective way to over cone sadness is to engage yourself in some neutral activities such as cleaning. Walking or readjng a light book. Once you try that for few days you may be ready for following things. There are few things I would like you to try. 1. When you feel sad. Feel the feeling of sadness fully. You may close your eyes and let that sadness flow through your mind and body. If tears flow let them flow. Cry it out. Feeling what you feel fully and totally is healing. Once you feel your sadness fully. You might feel the lightness in your heart. Feel that too and say out loud. How wonderful! and engage your mind remembering some good qualities and good times you spent with the person you are missing. 2. Regular simple breath awareness meditation also help manage your loss. 3. You may also l write daily 3 to 5 things you are grateful to every morning. These things could be as simple as having a bed to sleep and food to eat. Affirm what you write and add new thing in your list for 7 to10 days. If you are not feeling any change over next 2 weeks or if you lack motivation to initiate and maintain above activities feel free contact me and we could work together for few weeks to months to reverse your cycle and help you appreciate what you have. Hope this helps wishing you very best. Edit answer.

My son is good with his studies but he is not focused. He cannot concentrate. He was interested in certain curricular activities like skatind, drawing, painting etc. I made him join but he did skating for 6 months and left saying that he could not win the race which the instructor use to organize in the end of the class and his frnd use to win. He is creative and good wild drawing but he got disinterested after sometime as he found it monotonous. Now he wants to join karate. please help as to how do I deal with him. What is it that can be done to increase his focus? He is 6 years old.

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, MBA (Healthcare)
Psychiatrist, Davanagere
Hi there ~ Your 6 years 2 mo son is probably suffering from inattentive type of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). A doctor will need to know if your child does at least six of these things in order to diagnose the condition: Daydreams Shifts from task to task without finishing anything Becomes easily distracted Misses important details Makes careless mistakes in homework and tests Gets bored quickly Has trouble getting organized (for example, losing homework assignments or keeping the bedroom messy and cluttered) Doesn’t seem to listen when spoken to Is slow to understand information Has trouble following instructions There are many ways in which you can try to increase his focus, however I advise you to consult a psychiatrist or a neuropsychiatrist to find the right medication or therapeutic option for your child. Hope this helps. Take care and have a lovely day!

I am 16 years old I want to know that how can I gain more and more fat easily and how to active the brain?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
I am 16 years old I want to know that how can I gain more and more fat easily and how to active the brain?
If it is really that important then you may increase your consumption of carbohydrates but make sure that you have a balanced diet too or you may take supplements to augment any vitamin or mineral loss or deprivation. For an active brain please do the following: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food.

Dear lybrate-user, Welcome to Lybrate. Addiction is abuse and addiction. If you’re ready to stop the substance and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from addiction and abuse —no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn’t easy. But it’s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of addiction. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Take care.

Dear lybrate user. Dreams has nothing to do with past, present or future life. They are just illusions of your subconscious mind. Do not take those dreams seriously, because if you take them seriously, you will loose your present too. Ignore them. Once you ignore them, they will not come again and again and disturb you. Take care.

Hi Ms. Lybrate-user, you are going through a tough time indeed. However, first and foremost you need to de-stress yourself and relax so that you can think well and act prudently on the steps next. I would advise you to remain mentally strong as you already are, believe in yourself, and have faith and hope that there always is light at the end of the tunnel, however dark the tunnel may appear to be at present. Practicing mindfulness meditation can also help you relax, de-stress and keep you focused even during these tough times. You may have a flight of disturbing thoughts initially but slowly you will get to do better and be able to control your mind/ thought pattern well. A trip to some hill station or some scenic natural place can possibly help you relax, rejuvenate, think clearly and have a fresh perspective. Simultaneously, do keep up your dietary habits, lifestyle & hobbies and try enjoying every moment of your life irrespective. Its indeed important that you stay psycho-socially active too. Should you still have issues keeping calm and focus, you can always seek help from a psychologist who can clinically evaluate and put you on anxiolytics suitably, should it require so. Hope this helps. Do take care, and all the very best.

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry
Sexologist, Mumbai
Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

As per medical studies, bipolar disorder is a personality disorder that is said to affect millions of people around the world, as per medical studies. Extreme mood swings that take a person from a state of euphoria to depression can be called bipolar disorder. While we all go through phases of the same, the patients who suffer from this disorder will usually show a persistent swing or shift between varying moods. The severe shifts will lead to difficulties when it comes to managing one's everyday affairs in a normal manner. The symptoms and signs are also characterised by the phases and mood swings that the patient may be going through.

Read on to know more about the signs and symptoms of bipolar disorder:

  1. Mania: One of the extremes in mood swings experienced by the patient includes extreme euphoria or mania for no apparent, or life altering reason. Feeling overly happy and enthusiastic are the basic symptoms of this phase.
  2. Impulsive: The patient can end up feeling elated for a prolonged period of time, with extreme restlessness and impulsive behaviour. They may also end up getting agitated and edgy. This is usually characterised by fidgety behaviour and when the patient speaks too fast. The patient may speak too fast due to racing thoughts which overtake his or her speech and actions.
  3. Confidence: In this stage, the patient may also display extraordinary confidence, which may not necessarily be backed by reality. In reality, things may be very different in terms of opportunities, skills, people and other such factors. During this mania phase, the patient may also indulge in risky behaviour that gives an adrenaline rush like gambling and having sexual intercourse with multiple partners. This usually happens when the patient is bolstered by a sudden surge of unfounded confidence.
  4. Depression: This is the other end of the spectrum for these patients. When the mania abates, it gives to way to extreme depression and even anxiety.
  5. Withdrawal: The patient usually tends to isolate himself or herself from the rest of the family and social circle for a prolonged period, refusing to meet anyone on a normal basis. They also avoid contact with people whom they meet every day, which can have an adverse effect on their work and the rest of the aspects of their lives.
  6. Memory and Concentration: In this phase, the patient can also experience difficulty in remembering important things and concentrating on tasks. The patient may also be preoccupied with a number of things which can prevent him or her from making proper decisions. Slow speech and lack of energy may follow as a result of such preoccupation. Preoccupation with death is a common symptom of this phase. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Sleep problem is usually due to so many worries and unsolved problems related to family and employment and sometimes due to changes in chemicals in the brain. This problem needs counselling and behaviours therapy and sometimes short course of medication for 3-4 months and everything will be normal. Also meditation and exercise will help you a lot.

Dear Lybrate user lybrate-user ,Ek baat aapko samajhni padegi ki Sabka nature different hota hai aur koi is world me perfect nahi hota kisi ke sath kuch problem hoti hai kisi ke sath kuch ,kitne husband apni wife ko physical torture bhi karte hai, cheat bhi karte hai but is point pe aap lucky ho. Iska ye matlab nahi ki is situation ko badla nahi ja sakta aur isko aap hi badal sakti ho ,aapko thoda samajhdari se kaam Lena hoga ,it's obvious humari apne life partner se kuch umeed hoti hai but life me sab kuch apne hisab se kisi ke sath nahi hota .Iska sabse achcha Rasta hai ki aap apne husband se baat karo aur samjhao ki jo hua us ko yahi pe full stop laga ke aap sab kuch naye Tarah se start krna chahti hai aur aap dono ko sath rahna hai to ye jaroori hai ki sab kuch restart kiya jaye achche se. I am sure wo bhi sab kuch normal karna chahte honge, koi apni life stressfull nahi banana chahta hai. Aapko Jab bhi gussa aaye kisi ko call Karke turant sab kuch share karo aur jo baat irritate kar rahi hai sab bata do. Iske regarding aap kisi counsellor ki help le sakte ho. Aap chaho to mujhse bhi online help le sakte ho. Take care.
