Robotic Surgery - Advantages, Risks and Usefulness

Robot-assisted surgery or robotic surgery is a new age surgical procedure that helps a doctor to perform complicated procedures with better flexibility and more precision. This is essentially a union of high-end technology and the hand-eye co-ordination of a skilled surgeon. It helps a doctor to have a highly magnified, 3D high definition image of the human anatomy. The procedure is performed by making tiny incisions with the help of consoles in the robotic machine. Robotic surgery has found varied application in surgeries, primarily in cancers related to the kidney, colon, rectum, Uterus, stomach, esophagus and so on.

About the robotic surgery procedure:
This process of surgery was approved by the FDA in 2000 in the US. Since then it has been rapidly adopted by hospitals across US, Europe, and Asia. Typically, robotic instruments include a mechanical arm and a camera arm along with surgical instruments attached to it. The surgeon takes control of the mechanical arm and the console gives a 3D view to perform the procedure.

Primary Advantages of Robotic Surgery
For a surgeon, robotic surgery means greater precision, more control, and better outcome. For a patent, robotic surgery essentially means fewer complications, reduced blood loss, less pain, reduced chances of infection at the site, fewer scars etc. The recovery time for a patient also reduces substantially, which in turn implies lesser number of days in the hospital.

How is robotic surgery helpful for cancer patients?
Cancer surgeries are complicated in most of the cases. Having said this, an increased number of surgical oncologists are getting inclined to robotic surgeries for performing cancer-related procedures with greater amount of precision. As many cancer surgeries are technically demanding and take a prolonged time, Robotic surgery helps the surgeon perform a better job due its optics and better precision and control. However, the scope of robotic surgery varies on the type of cancer a patient is suffering from. Not all cancer-related surgeries qualify for robotic surgeries.

What are the risks involved in robotic surgery?
Like any open surgery, robotic surgeries have risks associated with them. The risks invovlved will be related to the organ being operated upon. There are no specific complications due to the Robot per se.

Which kind of patients qualify for robotic surgery?
Not all patients qualify for robotic surgery. This form of invasive surgery is only possible if a doctor feels that there is less amount of complications involved during the procedure. After weighing the risks, a doctor takes a call on whether or not to go ahead with a robotic surgery.

Miscarriage - Why it Happens?

Miscarriage - Why it Happens?

For a mother, a miscarriage is the last thing she would want to hear. It can pin her down psychologically, leading to trauma and stress in unfathomable measures. To understand miscarriage better, it is a condition wherein there is a loss of pregnancy within the first 22 weeks of getting pregnant. The primary symptom of a miscarriage is bleeding from the vagina. So if you experience vaginal bleeding during this phase, then consult a doctor for further guidance.

Why do they occur?
There are many reasons as to why a miscarriage may occur and no study has been able to put a finger on any one specific cause. Having said that, miscarriages are mainly caused due to the presence of unusual chromosomes in the baby. Chromosomes are genetic material that directs the growth and development of a baby. Chromosomes present in either excess numbers or less can hinder the development of the baby. If the miscarriage occurs during the second trimester (14th to 26th week), then it can be accrued to a health anomaly in the mother. A miscarriage may also occur because of a weak cervix as a weak cervix will not be able to hold a pregnancy. This condition is called cervical insufficiency and occurs when the woman is in her second trimester.

Is it possible to prevent them?
In most cases, miscarriages cannot be prevented. For women who have suffered multiple miscarriages, multiple medications might be required to help with their subsequent pregnancies. Following a healthy lifestyle is recommended as it can minimize the risk of a miscarriage. One must abstain from smoking and substance abuse and limit consumption of alcohol in order to keep the body in optimal condition. It is advised to maintain optimal weight levels and eat a well-balanced diet.

Post miscarriage
A miscarriage is a very traumatic experience for a mother to be; it can be emotionally debilitating. That is the reason counseling can help in times such as these. Start planning for a baby only once the symptoms have subsided and you have also had a period post the miscarriage. It is important to make sure that you are physically and emotionally ready to have a baby. Remember, a miscarriage doesn’t mean the end of the world. One can enjoy a fully healthy and a successful pregnancy even after a miscarriage.

Ovarian Cyst And Pregnancy - Know The Connection!

Ovarian Cyst And Pregnancy - Know The Connection!

There are several conceptions regarding ovarian cysts and pregnancy. The main question that arises in the mind of people is whether their wish of getting pregnant getting impeded because of an ovarian cyst? Does ovarian cyst cause infertility?

Well in this article, you may find adequate information regarding ovarian cysts, pregnancy and infertility.

When a woman learns that she has an ovarian cyst, she already starts getting palpitation. However, studies say that maximum cysts that a woman tend to develop in their ovary are not life threatening. They are functional cysts, which will be completely vanished on their own after some months. These types of cysts do not cause any complications in pregnancy. But these may end up creating problems regarding the ovulation power of women.

Now if we focus on the classification of the cysts which can cause infertility, we will find two different types, Endometriomas and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Endometroisis - Its Effects and Remedies

Basically the tissue endometrium (which lines up the uterus), grows out of the surface of uterine cavity in case of cysts. When an endometrium grows on ovary, it can cause endometriomus which precludes women's body from producing fertile eggs. In several cases, endometroisis interferes with pregnancy by stimulating scar tissue formation that generally tends to complicate fallopian tubes' normal function. Also, when endometroisis cells secrete substances, it can cause hindrance in the interaction process of sperms and eggs, which further leads to infertility issues.

Along with such problems, there are other hormonal disorders that can arise with endometroisis which can cause weak nidation and lead to early miscarriages. This particular problem generally occurs in the women between the age of 25-35 years. There are handful of remedies for these types of cysts. In many cases, ovulation is being blocked for a certain period. Apart from this, surgical treatment might be given in some cases such as laparoscopy or laparotomy.

PCOS - Its Effects and Remedies

The second type of cyst that creates hindrance in getting pregnant is polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS. This type generally occurs when a woman has instability in her reproductive hormones. As a result, the ovaries fail to produce the required hormones, which help the follicles in producing mature eggs.

PCOS is generally treated with the help of hormonal medication. PCOS is considered to be the leading cause of infertility.

Other Types of Cysts

Corpus leutal Cyst is very common in pregnancy. It is considered to be asymptomatic and tends to disappear within the 16th week of pregnancy. Cysts which are not over 7cm in size, can be kept until delivery. However, large cysts generally cause pain and need to be removed through surgery

Surgery is always an option for ovarian cysts. Laparoscopy is considered to be safe during pregnancy as there are almost no risk factors. So it is being suggested by health experts that one should not get worried about ovarian cysts during pregnancy, as there are too many remedies to cure them.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!
