Hi Good Day to you, I met with an accident 5 days back, where I got a head injury, just one inch above my right fore head with 4 staples on the cut. My my injury is getting healed well with regular dressing. I have few symptoms, I doubt it's normal or should take it further. 1. If I'm bending down, I feel dizzy and uncomfortable. 2. My left eye has a slight blurred vision. 3. I could only do work slowly. If I have to do something in a hurry, I feel uneasiness with headache. Kindly advise, are these symptoms in normal recovery or anything abnormal?

Dear Lybrate user:- you have blunt injury on Rt side of forehead. Any head injury should not be taken as a simple. If after 48 hours of duration, there r dizziness, vomiting, visual impairment, we should proceed for through ophthalmic & neurological investigation to rule out any brain haematoma/fracture or else.

Corneal Surgery - What Is It?

Corneal Surgery - What Is It?

The cornea refers to the dome-like structure visible at the front of the eye. This is the outermost layer of the eye. The cornea protects the eye against germs, dirt and other harmful particles and helps focus light coming into the eye onto the retina to create an image. It also acts as a filter against UV radiation produced by the sun. In the case of injuries to the cornea due to scarring or eye diseases a corneal transplant may be advised. This is also known as keratoplasty.

The first step for a corneal transplant is to add the patient’s name to the transplant list at the local eye bank. A transplant can only be performed after a donor's eye is made available. The surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure and takes a maximum of 2 hours.

Local or general anaesthesia may be used for this procedure depending on the patient’s age, overall health and personal preference. A lid speculum is then used to keep the eyelids open through the surgery. A circular section of the injured cornea is then removed using a surgical tool or a laser beam. A matching section from the donor cornea is then used to replace the removed section and stitched into place. These stitches usually stay in place for a year after the surgery.

The healing of the cornea is a slow process and hence to prevent any injuries to the eye, a protective shield is usually worn over the eye for a few months. Patients may experience mild discomfort and blurred vision for the first few months after surgery. Steroid eye drops may also be prescribed to help the body accept the transplant and control infections. These eye drops will need to be used for up to a year after the surgery. As the cornea heals, the patient’s vision will improve. The results of a corneal transplant are said to have a life of about 10 years. However, this depends on the root cause of the problem.

Corneal transplants have a very high success rate but in rare cases, the eye may reject the transplant. Glaucoma and corneal swelling caused by an earlier cataract surgery can increase this risk. However, if this rejection is detected early enough, the process can be reversed. Some signs to look out for that may indicate that your body is rejecting the transplant are increased sensitivity to light, redness, pain and decreased vision.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are both important nutrients for eye health,6 as both of them are found in high concentrations in your macula—the small central part of your retina responsible for detailed central vision. More specifically, lutein is also found in your macular pigment – known for helping to protect your central vision and aid in blue light absorption—and zeaxanthin is found in your retina.Estimated daily dose of lutein is 10 mg per day, and at 2 mg/day for zeaxanthin. Both lutein and zeaxanthin are primarily found in green leafy vegetables, although zeaxanthin is far scarcer than lutein. Kale and spinach are two of the most lutein-rich foods, but you'll also find it in carrots, squash, and other orange and yellow fruits and vegetables. Both lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids called xanthophylls, which give plants and vegetables their yellow-orange color, and the name "lutein" comes from the Latin word "luteus," which means "yellow." If you remember this, it may help you pick out vegetables that are likely to contain higher amounts of these two nutrients. Egg yolk is another source of both lutein and zeaxanthin that is well absorbed by your body Most of the dark green leafy vegetables, previously recommended for a higher intake of lutein and zeaxanthin, have 15-47 percent of lutein, but a very low content (0-3 percent) of zeaxanthin. study shows that fruits and vegetables of various colors can be consumed to increase dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthi It is also important to note that lutein is an oil-soluble nutrient, so if you eat the vegetables without some oil or butter your body can't absorb the lutein. Adding a little bit of healthy fat, such as olive oil, coconut oil, or raw organic butter, will maximize your lutein absorption. Lutein content in food Food Mg / serving Orange ( Raw) 0.2/1 large Egg 0.2/1 large Spinach (cooked) 20.4 / 1 cup Papaya(Raw) 0.3/1 large Turnip greens (cooked) 12.2 / 1 cup Green peas (cooked) 4.1 / 1 cup Spinach (raw) 3.7 / 1 cup Corn (cooked) 1.5 / 1 cup Broccoli (raw) 1.3 / 1 cup Broccoli (cooked) 0.8 / 1/2 cup Green beans (cooked) 0.9 / 1 cup
