Crown Sensitivity: Causes and Management

Crown Sensitivity: Causes and Management

Losing a tooth to infection (decay) or trauma can be a painful experience. Imagine that you are in a dental chair and just got a new tooth or a bridge fitted. It is a joyous experience, almost like a new found lease of life, to be able to eat better and look better. However, even after a few days to a week, you realize that the new crown is just not settling down completely. There is a constant sensitivity that exists and is not allowing you to enjoy the new tooth.

There are various reasons that the new crown can be sensitive, some of them including:

  1. A high point: On the new crown, there could be small points that do not allow for a bite as earlier. This can lead to sensitivity and minor jaw discomfort.
  2. Improper fit with exposed dentin: This can happen at the neck area, where the crown is not fitting the tooth, leaving a small part of dentin exposed. This can lead to sensitivity once the crown is fixed in.
  3. Other decayed teeth: If there is a decayed tooth adjacent to the crown, it could be confusing and sometimes difficult to pinpoint the exact area.

If it persists for more than a week, check with your dentist on the following:

  1. Severity of decay: The extent of decay in the first place should be considered, especially if you have had crown as a result of extensive tooth decay. If it was involving a large portion of the dentin, the changes of having sensitivity are high, even after a crown placement.  In these cases, there could be silent abscess, which may never manifest as symptoms, but can cause a gnawing sensitivity issue with each bite.
  2. Area of decay: Root caries and cervical caries are more prone to have sensitivity compared to the crown of the tooth. The enamel layer in these areas is thin and the chances of dentinal involvement is high. The rate at which the decay will reach the pulp and cause pain is also higher.
  3. Type of dental treatment: If extensive metal work is done, the sensitivity might last longer than a week, which is the norm.
  4. Triggering factors: Make a note of what triggers the sensitivity, hot, cold or sweets.
  5. Management: As mentioned, expect the sensitivity with your new crown to last for up to a week. In some cases, it may be longer, depending on, as noted above, the severity of the original decay, the area, triggers, etc.

While some cases may be managed with a small trim of the crown, some may need the crown to be re-fitted, and some may even require re-treating the tooth completely.

Dentist,
Read carefully:

If you haven't had your teeth cleaned in the last 3 to 6 months you could be spreading infection to the rest of your body. Please prevent oral systemic health issues by getting your teeth cleaned regularly from your dentist or hygienist. According to the american academy of periodontology, several studies have shown periodontal disease to be associated with heart disease.

BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
If cavity is not deep or there is no pain and sensitivity in the decayed tooth then go for restoration (filling) but if cavity is deep or there is pain and sensitivity in the decayed tooth then first get the X-RAY done of that tooth and send me the X-RAY picture for further diagnosis.

This is common in pregnancy as the hormones play a vital role, it is may be due to the yellowish tartar accumulated in the gums, once the delivery is done, kindly visit the dentist for cleaning, as it is harmful to undergo any procedure in thrid trimester.

Pressing of mucocele is not its treatment. It keeps coming back again n again. It can't b treated with medicines. It is best treated with its excision. It is a small surgical procedure. Visit an oral n maxillofacial surgeon for the same.

BLEEDING GUMS
Bleeding gums is a sign of gum disease Gingivitis and advanced stage Periodontitis. Bleeding gums happen due to inadequate plaque removal. Germs present in the plaque attack the healthy tissue around the teeth and cause the first stage of gum disease –Gingivitis. Signs and Symptoms of gingivitis include bleeding gums, swollen, red or tender gums and bad breath or taste. If gingivitis is not treated then the plaque will harden into tartar and this will lead to increased bleeding and a more advanced form of gum and jaw bone disease known as Periodontitis which can finally lead to tooth loss.
Causes of bleeding gums include: Poor oral hygiene, brushing too hard, improper flossing, vitamin deficiency- C or K, ill fitting denture, hormonal changes during pregnancy, infection either it can be tooth or gum related. Ongoing gum bleeding may be due to serious medical conditions such as leukemia, bleeding or platelet disorder.
It is important to visit a dentist at first sign of bleeding gums because first stage of gum disease gingivitis can be treated and reversed completely. For further details you can contact us or visit our clinic.

Dear lybrate-user, your pain is all because of infection inside your tooth n surrounding tissues. So painkiller alone cannot work of your pain. You have to take proper antibiotic course along with you should visit your dentist to check for further treatment like rct or filling according to your decay.

My gums are bleeding occasionally at the backside of the rear teeth of lower jaw.

My gums are bleeding occasionally at the backside of the rear teeth of lower jaw.
hello rahul, this seems to be due to swollen gums. whenever there is deposition of plaque and calculus around teeth, gum infection takes place, due to which gums become swollen and stars bleeding. visit a dentist soon for professional cleaning of your teeth. this will help in removing the cause of infection and hence bleeding also will stop within some days. meanwhile you can do warm saline rinses twice a day. maintain proper oral hygiene.

Namaskaar Manav! Agar aapke daanto ka peelapan tambaku ke kisi bhi tarah ke prayog karne se hai to aapko uska prayog band karna hoga tabhi upchaar kaamyab ho sakega. Iska upchaar hai ek yogya dant chikitsak dwara daanto aur masudho ki paradhwanik yantrik safai. Taduparant bhi peelapan barkarar rahe to rasayano dwara dant chamkai ki prakriya puri ki ja sakti hai. Apke mukh se badbu aane ka bhi ilaaz yahi hai. Saath hi aap koi mukh kulla drav bhi prayog kar sakte hai jaise chlorhexidine or listerine itayadi. Ek padha likha gyani dant chikitsak aapko gharelu nuskhe se daanto ka peelapan door karne ke salah nahi dega jaise ki neebu ka ras, khane ka soda ityadi. Ye sab galat tarike se prayog karne pe daanto ko kshanik laabh milta hai aur baad me jyada nuksaan hota hai. Isliye hey mitra aap gharelu nuskhe pe dhyan na de aur ek bhingya dant chikitsak se sampark karen. Dhanyawaad.

There are minor gaps between my upper pair of teeth which doesn't looks good. Is there any solution for it?

There are minor gaps between my upper pair of teeth which doesn't looks good. Is there any solution for it?
Lybrate-user yes there is a treatment for gaps in teeth or spacing in teeth. Depending on the space innumerable solutions may be offered by dentists to you minimal corrections can be handled by laminates. Either composite or ceramic which is like having labial faced crown on your teeth wid minimal intervention or tooth cutting. These are not very time consuming process more so even better is an ortho treatment where the doctor may establish if it's a local or a skeletal defect and give you tooth movement appliances like in lay man term braces etc to bridge the space n correct your smile these are just two examples to give you an idea any treatment requires an assessment of your oral cavity in person all treatments vary in price n time kindly get in touch with a good orthodontist in your area who can help you out good luck.
