I am 74 years old . An old RCT done is now become painful. Local dentist tried to remove the filling to do the RCT again but has failed to remove the old filling to required depth . Suggesting extraction . Can extraction be avoided

MDS - Periodontics
Dentist, Yamunanagar
Dear, First of all very sorry to hear that you are in pain. About the extraction, I would say yes it can be avoided. You need to visit an Endodontist (RCT and Fillings specialist). He will definitely retriev the remaining filling material and perform a re RCT. It will not only save your tooth but also the money required to replace the tooth If you let me know your city, I can help you in finding a good Endodontist. Till the you can take painkillers, whichever suits you the best. Good Luck, God Bless and Take care.

For maintaining oral hygiene, rinsing your mouth with an alchohol-free mouth wash after every meal is important as it prevents the formation of bacteria.

There are some normal enamel defects like cracks which may not cause any severe problem life long. If these cracks are acquired due to some childhood Trauma or in adulthood, it can cause tooth discoloration and can become completely dead (black) later in life. So a dentist can clarify about your problem and future of these concerned teeth.

Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. May be viral pharyngitis. If so, there is no specific treatment for viral pharyngitis. You can relieve symptoms by gargling with warm salt water several times a day (use ½ teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water). Taking anti-inflammatory drugs or medications, such as acetaminophen, can control symptoms.

All About Different Types of Gum Disease

Gum disease begins with the growth of bacteria in your mouth and it may end with loss of teeth. Thus, the severity of gum disease or periodontitis should not be underestimated. Tooth loss mainly happens due to the destruction of the tissue which surrounds the teeth.

Types of gum disease:

  1. Gingivitis: Gingivitis is basically the first stage of periodontitis. It causes bleeding from the gums and also causes immense pain in the teeth.
  2. Periodontitis: In periodontitis, the gum and teeth separate. A gap is formed between the two which may cause debris to accumulate in the space and cause other infections.

Causes of gum disease:
The exact cause of gum disease is not known but here are some of the possible causes:

  1. Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menopause and puberty are just some times the gums become more sensitive and gingivitis develops.
  2. Illnesses: Cancer, HIV, diabetes and other illnesses may cause problems with the immune system and damage the gums. This is an example of how gingivitis is caused as a complication of other disorders.
  3. Bad habits: Smoking causes gum disease as you may already know.
  4. Poor oral hygiene: Not brushing and flossing may lead to accumulation of food materials in the mouth causing gum diseases.
  5. Family history: Family history is also a major contributing factor to what may cause gum disease.

Treatment:
The treatment prescribed for gum disease depends how deep it is set and whether it is a case of gingivitis or periodontitis. Here are the possible treatments for gum disease:

  1. Professional dental cleaning: This is the most common treatment used in the early stages of gum disease. In fact, dental cleanings are usually used to prevent it and are used as soon as tartar and plaque buildup.
  2. Scaling and root planing: This is also a type of cleaning except that it needs to be done under a local anesthetic as there is a certain degree of pain involved in the procedure.
  3. Surgery: Surgery is also sometimes used to remove the infected pockets and put the gums back in their original place.

Every time I take ibuprofen or Paracetamol I get a lot of flemme or mucus in the morning which I have to spit out. Is the flemme caused by these pain-killers? What should I replace them with? I'm 67 years old. Thank you.

If you are experiencing side effects, please stop taking the drug immediately. Ibuprofen can be very dangerous especially if you take an overdose of it. Please visit a doctor and get the correct dosage of the right drug for you after informing him about other medical conditions, if you have any.

If your wisdom tooth is erupting in abnormal way, it is advised to get it removed. Otherwise maintain good oral hygiene. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water twice daily for relief. And visit the dentist for examination and proper treatment plan.
