I am suffering with insomnia since last ten days, actually my job is a night shift job, so can you please suggest me for good sleep in a day time. Thank you sir/Madam.

MD, MBBS, Fellowship (Diplomate American Board)
Neurologist, Bangalore
Hs. I'll try and outline some general advice to help you improve your sleep habits. The concept is called sleep hygiene. Question 1) what is your height and weight? 2) do you snore? has anyone told you that you do? 3) under normal circumstances, do you sleep continuously through the night? or do you wake up once or more? 4) do you have any difficulties breathing? 5) what would you say is the quality of your sleep? do you wake up every morning feeling refreshed? 6) under normal circumstances. What are your sleep timing like? I see that you work at night? when do you try to sleep? how many hours do you get? 7) can you describe your sleep environment? is it dark? is it quiet? what is the temperature in the room? 8) do you smoke? drink alcohol? or drink energy drinks like redbull to stay awake? 9) do you have any medical conditions for which you are undergoing treatment or have undergone treatment in the last 5 years? 10) do you take any medications or supplements (vitamins etc) on a regular basis? I will leave the questioning there for now lets talk about a concept called" sleep hygiene. Your brain needs sleep to repair and strengthen the various neural pathways that get used during the day. Sleep is actually an active process for the brain. Unlike your muscles and your other organs. Your brain can actually be more active at certain times when you are asleep. My reason for telling you this is that the circumstances under which you try to go to bed are very important. Sleep is controlled by something called the'circadian rhythm, you can think out it as the'sleep cycle. That sleep cycle is controlled by various internal and external influences. One of the most important is light! light controls when we go to sleep and when we wake up to a great extent. So. If you try to fall asleep in a room that is very bright! like a room with the curtains open in the afternoon. Then your brain will be receiving the wrong signals and you will not sleep. The concepts and advice given by the us. National sleep foundation are a good set of guidelines you can use to help improve your sleep hygiene.

During Ramadan it is quite easy to lose body fat as you fast from sun rise to sunset. Your body goes into an intermittent fasting which is very good for health. On finishing your fast you should be eating a light meal which comprises of fruits and chicken or eggs. Rest of the meals should be light. Do not eat sugars and sweets and fried stuffs. To maintain a low body fat and/or lower body fat: 1. Exercise at least 5 times per week 2. Eat whole/unprocessed foods at regular intervals, while being aware of physical hunger/fullness cues 3. Sleep 7-9 hours per night 4. Don’t engage in extreme diets 5. Stay consistent with your habits 6. Incorporate non-exercise physical activity 7. Ignore food advertising You need a fat loss diet which comprises of whole grains like jowar, bajra, wheat, brown rice, pulses like moong, musoor, bengal gram, lots of vegetables, fruits, eggs, fish, chicken, paneer, healthy oil, nuts and seeds. You need to eat them in right proportion. Avoid eating sugar and sweets, refined foods like maida, noodles pasta, White rice and products, bread. Drink a lot of water.

Hello Lybrate user, I would suggest you to follow a diet rich in proteins, eating proteins in every meal will help you boost metabolism as well as help you in weight loss. Along with this you also need to incorporate foods rich in fiber as this also helps you cut fat from the body and help you in weight reduction as well as improves digestion. Basically you need to cut down on calories from simple carbohydrate foods and consume calories from complex carbohydrate foods, proteins and fiber. Drink lots of water throughout the day helps in improving the metabolism and also cuts fat from the body ultimately leading to weight loss. Good luck!

Hi. Take diet rich in protein like non-veg., eggs (it's loaded with essential nutrients such as proteins, Vitamin B12, iron, zinc and Omega 6 fatty acids in large amounts and biotin) , different pulses & legumes, sprouts, nuts (sp. walnuts and almonds); iron-rich food like green vegetables, dates, carrots, prunes, green peas; also oats, shrimp, take flaxseeds, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, green tea, soyabean, fruits, salads, etc. Take low-fat dairy products (they also contain whey and casein, two high-quality protein sources) Take proper 6-9hrs of sound sleep. Give up the habit of smoking and excessive alcohol intake. Avoid junk food and any kind of beverages (tea, coffee, aerated drinks, cold drinks, etc.) Avoid canned/ tinned food or food that contains preservatives (eat fresh ones). Avoid use of hard water to wash the head rather use boiled water for head wash. Avoid use of harsh hair colour, hair treatment like rebonding, straightening, perming, etc. Avoid vigorous exercises or any supplements provided by the gym! Cover your head with scarf or cap while stepping outside. Use Rose wood/ any wooden hair comb to brush your hair. Regular exercising is also one of the important point, but should be done under some good, qualified yoga teacher or instructor for proper guidance; it also releases the stress/ tension in the mind and the body and keeps you FIT and YOUNG!! Medication: Take homoeopathic Rx - Schwabe's Wiesbaden 200 & Alfalfa Tonic twice a day for 1 month and revert. Also, use Schwabe's Arnica shampoo and Hair Growth oil regularly as per the condition of your scalp (minimum 3 times a week). After shampooing, use Bakson's Arnica Hair conditioner as well after every head wash. Apart from this, take Follihair tablets (multivitamin) - 1 tab. daily once for 1 month.

About Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

DGO, MBBS, Advanced Infertility
Gynaecologist, Delhi
Play video

I am Dr Nimmi Rastogi. I am a practising gynaecologist at Sarthak medical centre, Malviya Nagar, New Delhi. I visit a number of corporate hospitals and my area of expertise is infertility. So, these days we are seeing a lot of cases of Polycystic Ovarian disorder also commonly known as PCOD a complex hormonal disorder where girls have late periods, scanty periods, women are unable to conceive.

There are also other things like weight gain, abnormal facial hair growth, spurt of acne, mood swings and all kinds of premenstrual syndromes. This can be caused due to family history at times due to diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity.

We ask you to not ignore these symptoms. Come to a gynecologist to run certain tests to rule out or confirm the diagnosis. Once the diagnosis is confirmed, we recommend certain medicines and certain lifestyle modifications.

Life style modifications is the mainstay of the treatment si that we ask the person to lose weight in case the person is overweight or to maintain an ideal weight. Don’t eat processed food, don’t eat junk food, have more proteins and lesser carbohydrate, go organic and you know, live healthy. Generally, breath deep and live free from stress, exercise every single day, have plenty of omega 3 fatty acids and omega 6 fatty acids.

So these are simple measures which you can inculcate in your routine and have some relief from this complex disorder.

So, I am available for consultation at Sarthak medical centre, Malvinagar. You can locate me on Lybrate on their website and other places also. So, if you have to make a consultation and you want to seek an online consultation, that also is possible. So, feel free to connect to Lybrate.

I am not loosing my weight. I am working hard from a long time. Please issue me a good exercise and diet plan.
Start using 'Myfitnesspal' App and monitor your calories. Usually people who are not losing weight are found to be taking more high calorie snacks / biscuits etc. Take account of every morsel of food. Intensify your exercise, and you will see the results.
