Why Skin-To-Skin Contact With A New Born Is Important?

M.D(Pediatrics), MBBS

Why Skin-To-Skin Contact With A New Born Is Important?

Newborns primarily need your love, care, and attention. If you aren't sure whether you're on the right track with your little one, read on to find out the 3 most important things that your newborn needs:

1. Skin-to-skin contact: One of the best ways to speed up the bonding process with your newborn is by having as much as possible skin-to-skin contact with your child. This is important as the newborn connects through smell and touch during this time. The senses of your baby are naturally tuned to react to the feel of your bare skin and your distinctive smell.

Many studies also suggest that close physical contact can help in reducing stress in your newborn so as to allow its biological drive to come through and easily latch onto your breast to feed itself. In other words, it ensures a higher chance of getting the newborn started on breast milk in case your child is not taking to your breasts easily.

2. To be breastfed: The best food for your baby is milk that is produced by you. Breast milk offers a host of benefits that go beyond basic nourishment. According to research conducted by the national institute of environmental health sciences, a child faces 20% lower chances of dying between the ages of 28 days and 1 year if he or she is breastfed.

Protecting your child from illnesses such as childhood cancers or type 1 and type 2 diabetes, allergies, and obesity are some of the very important benefits that mother's milk can provide.

3. Swaddling your baby right: Wrapping a blanket snugly around the body of your newborn can help calm your little one and promote sleep. Several studies reveal that this technique of swaddling (which is done to resemble the mother's womb) if done correctly can bring about longer and better sleep for your child as well as reduce instances of crying. It also ensures your baby stays warm and comfortable.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

My boy baby has got one month older and it has got bigger tummy are rest are proper in size. Is this because of drinking plenty of water by mother? Pls give suggestions and why this so?

My boy baby has got one month older and it has got bigger tummy are rest are proper in size. Is this because of drink...
The big tummy is because of aerophagia - which is quite common at this age. Burping properly will help. No connection with mother drinking more water.

Hello doctor my daughter is 2.5 month old Recently she has catches cold nose block
I'm using mucolite and nasal salin...
Dear, You are very sensible to mention the baby weight because it’s very important to prescribe any medication. Next important thing is that are you feeding the baby while lying down. Please make sure that one must not feed babies at night while lying down. One must sit and feed the baby and tap baby back till baby burps and then make them lie down to sleep. The medication you using currently doesn’t have antibiotic in it. Sup moxclav bd 1.5 ml twice daily Sup ascoril flu 1.5 ml twice daily Nasivion mini nasal drops two drops twice daily These medication will help you for sure and if you are not comfortable using the prescription I advised please visit your Pediatritian to discuss the treatment and start it. Get well soon.

Hallo, doctor my son age 5 month 15 days, weight:- 5. 3kg, he had suffered the whole of heart (size-6mm). So what I can do?

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
Watch the growth of heart, usually it should close by itself. Serial 2decho would help monitor the hole in septum(vsd). If it is asd will need surgical closer. In any case meet paediatric cardiologist.

I have 7yrs old son and he is suffering with adenoid transcle since 3yrs and he is taking prescribed medicines, now doctor advice is to go for surgery. Is it compulsary for the children. Once our doctor said that these transcles will cure automatically when the boy grows. Doubts ------------- 1) if the surgery is necessary how much it cost 2) after the surgery throat is effected or not 3) does it effect the other child.

MS - ENT(Gold Medalist), MBBS
ENT Specialist, Delhi
Although adenoid regress with age but once adenoids are infected and enlarged enough to cause airway narrowing surgery is only curative treatement. Now a days done with new techniques like microdebrider/coblator with minimal bleeding and pain.

Can the administration of MMR vaccine to a 15 month Old baby girl cause Autism syndrome?

MBBS, DCH
Pediatrician, Panchkula
Can the administration of MMR vaccine to a 15 month Old baby girl cause Autism syndrome?
No MMR vaccine doesn't cause Autism, MMR vaccine should be given to all the children for the protection against measles mumps and rubella which are more common in childhood. Booster dose is given at 4 to 6 years of age. Along with MMR, varicella (chicken pox) can be given.
