Hello, babies born before 37 weeks of gestational age are called pre mature babies. They are, of course, smaller than full term babies, but many are born without their organs having had enough time to fully develop. Some of these babies show obvious disabilities. They need a considerable medical care to survive. Mature babies are born after the completion of 37 weeks of pregnancy. Thanks.

My son age 6 years high fever for 2 days with shivering sometimes is in cefuroxime and paracetamol 5ml three times a day also has cough. My question is how long we have to give this medicine to him.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Tumkur
Most probably it's viral infection which usually lasts for 7-10 days. Fever may last for 3-5days. Give paracetamol 250mg whenever there is fever. Don't give cefuroxime.

My daughter is 14 months old. She had undergone surgery for not passing her first stool due to meconium ileus. I had came to know that meconium ileus will be due to cystic fibrosis. Please inform me about the symptoms of cystic fibrosis and other reasons for having meconium ileus.

General Physician,

Meconium ileus (mi) is a condition where the content of the baby's bowel (meconium) is extremely sticky and causes the bowel to be blocked at birth. In most cases the bowel itself is complete and intact but it is just the inside that is blocked. In some cases there has been a twist of the bowel before birth, which has caused the bowel to be blind ending (an atresia). Most babies with meconium ileus (90%) have cystic fibrosis (cf) and it is this that has caused the sticky meconium. Meconium ileus is a rare condition affecting only 1 in 25, 000 babies. I have a problem of bedwetting. I am suffering from my childhood so please help me to cure this problem as it is not good for me.

MBBS MD DCH, Dch
Pediatrician, Muzaffarpur
I have a problem of bedwetting. I am suffering from my childhood so please help me to cure this problem as it is not ...
Well bedwetting also known as nocturnal enuresis is not uncommon in childhood due to immaturity of full urinary bladder which fails to send signal to brain to awaken the child. Most cases have genetic predisposition (familial tendency). Invariably the condition remits once the child grows up. It is uncommon to persist in adolescent age group. What to do then? it is first desirable to rule out any structural or functional anamoly of urinary tract. Once ruled out then following measures help a lot. 1 toilet training: to hold urine during day time to strengthen/enhance bladder capacity 2 to void urine 2 hours prior to sleep 3 no water/liquid intake within 2 hours of sleep. 4 role of drugs like imipramine is limited. There is relapse once medicine is stopped 5 wet bed alarm bell has been found to be very effective as with single drop of urine passed during sleep shall alarm the bell and person shall go the toilet for completion voiding 6 I have found with mentat syrup very encouraging results. 7 the family support is required! 8 there is nothing to be disappointed. You shall overcome this problem slowly but surely

Hi, I am having a query about my daughter. She is 8 months old. She don't eat anything if I force her she cries a lot and vomit it out. She only do breast feeding. What should I do? Feeling confused.

Hi, I am having a query about my daughter. She is 8 months old. She don't eat anything if I force her she cries a lot...
Hello. Firstly, try to stop breastfeeding. It will cause some trouble for few days. Bear it. Next, donot force her to eat. That will make her averse to food. Sit together on a dining table and give her a separate plate and spoon. Serve food and let her enjoy it by herself. It will be messy at times, but enjoy it. If she is hungry, she will eat. You and your family also join together at meals. It will automatically develop her eating habits. Happy parenting Regards

My baby girl cries so often for past few days and is having poor feeding. She is teething fast. please advice.
Reason of cry appears to be hunger. Give her frequent feed. If you feel cry is due to teething, apply oracep or zytee gum paint. Else you may consult pediatrician.

4 Common Diseases that Babies are Susceptible To

4 Common Diseases that Babies are Susceptible To

Infants often suffer from certain diseases which need proper care and timely treatment for quick recovery. At times, it can be difficult to communicate with an infant and understand his/her needs and problems but with a close observation you will surely be able to detect any alteration in the baby's behavior and sense it when he/she is ill. Here are some of the most common diseases infants are susceptible to and what you can do about them.

1. Abdominal distension
It is normal for a baby's belly to stick out after he/she has been fed, but if between feedings there is swelling in the abdomen or it feels hard, it can be an indication of a problem. If this symptom is accompanied by vomiting and absence of bowel movements for more than two days, your baby may be suffering from abdominal distention. This condition may have been caused by swallowing of extra air by the baby while crying or feeding. In such a situation, a pediatrician should be consulted for proper diagnosis and treatment.

2. Jaundice
It is common among newborns to develop mild forms of jaundice as the undeveloped liver is often not able to eliminate the chemical bilirubin from the blood. Mostly, this situation proves to be harmless till the level of bilirubin reaches a certain limit. After that, the disease must be properly treated to avoid damage to the baby's brain or nervous system.

3. Rsv infection
Rsv or respiratory syncytial virus is responsible for causing respiratory problems among infants. Rsv infection usually affects the bronchial passage and shows symptoms like cough, runny nose and mild fever which may even lead to bronchitis. Moreover, this infection may also develop into viral pneumonia, which makes it more important to consult a pediatrician if your baby shows any of the above symptoms.

4. Diarrhea
Infants are susceptible to watery bowel movements due to the action of virus, allergens, specific medications or bacteria. If you observe that your baby is passing stools more often than usual and it is watery, then it may be a case of diarrhea. Sometimes, these symptoms are accompanied by high fever, abdominal pain, lethargy, vomiting, dry eyes and mouth etc. In this situation you should consult your pediatrician and focus on replacing the fluids your baby has lost, to prevent dehydration.

My kid baby boy age is 13 months but his weight is just 8 kg and the boy is very active. Please help me.

ICMR Training. in. clinical. Genetics and Metabolism, Fellowship in Pediatric And Adolescent Endocrinology

Hello , weight is less, but birth weight and feeding practices are important to assess. Also it depends on the height gain and weight gain pattern whether the child is having an issue or not. You should ask your pediatrician to plot the height and weight and head size on growth chart and keep monitoring growth every two months. This way you can make an informed decision and management can be done. I hope it helped Dr. Uppal growth, childhood diabetes and hormone specialist.

My son 2 years 4 months old. He is thin and doesn't have good eater. Kindly suggest any good syrup for him.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Faridabad
Basic principle is six meals per day,one large and one small meal. Alternative meals are heavy (3-4fist) size and light (2-3 fist) size. Minimum gap between meals is three hours and no intermediate eating (grasing). Allow your baby to eat himself and give him maximum 20 minutes and withdraw the good. Next meal must be offered 3hours later. No grasing. Most children are anaemic, so any iron syrup 5ml once a day is good enough to stumilate apetite.

Best Ways to Deal With Tonsillitis in Kids

DAA, Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS, DMRD
Pediatrician, Mumbai
Best Ways to Deal With Tonsillitis in Kids

Tonsillitis, in the easiest terms, is the swelling of tonsils in our throat that is accompanied by symptoms like throat pain, difficulty in swallowing/ drinking, altered voice and fever etc.

As in the case of most infections, the occurrence of tonsillitis is more common in children due to relatively lower immunity and habits that invite infections. Let's take a look at the first line of defence when you have a cranky child with swollen tonsils.

1. Make your child gargle with salty warm water: This treatment is most helpful in any infection in the mouth. Add half teaspoonful of salt to a glass of warm water and make the child gargle with the mixture as many times in the day as possible (to a maximum of 5 times). Continue till the condition prevails.

Make sure the child spits out the water and not drinks it.

2. Antibiotics: Consult the ent specialist and have the antibiotics if it is a bacterial cause as per the doctor. Take the alternative treatment prescribed in case of other causes. The entire course of medication should be completed even if the kid gets better sooner to eliminate all traces of bacteria.

3. Painkiller/numbing lozenges: Painkillers that are prescribed by the doctor can be given to ease the pain. Same is the case with lozenges but care should be taken that he/she should not have too many of these.

4. Allow him/her to take rest: It does help in a betterment of the condition!

5. Give warm (not hot) soothing food: Soup, ginger honey mixture, ginger tea can help soothe the inflamed tonsils in most cases. The condition, more often than not, gets better within 7-10 days.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Gurgaon
Hi Shilu. I would suggest you first use natural things and herbs to increase breast milk. try using Jeera, ajwain in you food daily along with a kadha of Jeera and ajwain to increase milk production. Scientific research has shown them to be very effective in increasing milk production. If it does not work you can use medicines like domstal twice a day to increase milk production. Hope this information helps you. All the best.
