Self motivation is the best way. The chewing gums in the market are just to help you with quitting but you need to be strong willed.

Brain Size and Intelligence - Are the Two Related?

DM - Neurology

Brain Size and Intelligence - Are the Two Related?

When it comes to the brain and IQ, is bigger better? Does size really matter? Is there really a connection between the size of your brain and intelligence? With the help of findings by neurologists and scientists, we seek to find out!

  1. Ailments and the brain: Scientists have found that children with autism have a brain that has grown in a disproportionate manner in the very first year of their life. This prevents the child from making connection in a normal manner. On the other hand, children and adolescents who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD show sign of having a much smaller brain size. Many scientists have shown that the size of the brain shrinks as we age and this does not have any visible effect on our cognitive abilities.
  2. It’s all relative: The size of the brain does not really have a bearing on the way a person’s cognition gets shaped. Even large mammals like elephants and whales are finally hunted and tamed by humans who have smaller brains in comparison. The brain is made up of billions of neurons, which need to function properly. It may be seen that scientists consider the brain mass in relation with the rest of the body so as to speculate about the cognitive abilities of the person. Why is this required? Large animals need a well functioning and proportionate brain size to control and run their organs with proper cognition for satisfactory results, which is what we humans seem to have done.
  3. Neanderthal brain: Historically, the earliest man or the Neanderthals are said to have had larger brains than we do. These people are believed to have brains that are at least 10% larger than the brains that we have in our modern times. The shape of their brain was different too. They were also heavily muscled people which had a bearing on the size and shape of the brain and bodies as well as the lean tissue within the brain. They also survived very successfully for a period of over 200,000 years, which obviously points to some form of elevated cognition, as per many scientists.
  4. Animals: While animals with small brains like lizards and reptiles do not perform too well on IQ tests, the animals with bigger brains like elephants and dolphins perform much better. But the medium sized brain of monkeys, lemurs and other animals are said to perform in the best manner. The correlation between the body size and the brain does not seem to hold good here, as per various researches.

So the verdict as per medical science and research stands divided! If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Dear lybrate user. I can understand. The curriculum and syllabus pattern and teaching and learning patterns are such stressful. But you should not be carried away by the stress. To keep yourself stressfree, you should be strict regarding planning and preparation of study and assignments, entertainment and physical activity and games. You have to make a time table which includes all the above. Diet which includes nuts, fruits and vegetables also helps. Take care.

Dear Lybrate user, Welcome to Lybrate. Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. Nicotine and other chemicals can cause cancer of different types and areas. Throat cancer, mouth cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer and brain problems can result. Over and above smoking may also increase the risk factor of heart attack and brain stroke. Please quit smoking. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like Nicotine Replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. If you’re ready to stop smoking and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from nicotine addiction and abuse—no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating nicotine addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn’t easy. But it’s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of smoking. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Mind power building therapy, motivation therapy etc should help you doing so. Take care.

Your problem is termed as Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome (EHS)and it is a condition in which people are highly sensitive to electromagnetic fields. In an area such as a wireless hotspot or Internet connection, they experience Headache and a variety of other symptoms including fatigue, nausea, burning and itchy skin, and muscle aches. These symptoms are subjective and vary between individuals. There are also some indications that these symptoms may be due to pre-existing psychiatric conditions as well as stress reactions as a result of worrying about believed EMF( Electromagnetic Frequency) health effects, rather than the EMF exposure itself but whatever is the cause, EHS is a real and sometimes a disabling problem for the affected persons. The five most common symptoms of electromagnetic hypersensitivity are: 1. skin itch/rash/flushing/burning, and/or tingling 2. confusion/poor concentration, and/or memory loss 3. fatigue and weakness 4. headache 5. chest pain and heart problems

I love sex & legs of girls. So I hv done HP daily. please tell me what kind of med I used for ignoring of sex.
There is no such medicine to control this habit, just your strong will power can achieve this target and forthat I will guide you with some points which you will have to implement in your lif style-------------- 1. Do exercise daily in the evening, for 30 minutesafter dinner, this will make you tired at night. And since masturbation is often done at night, so when you are exhausted, you will give preference to sleep not to masturbation. -------------------------------- 2. Avoid sitting on your bed. Use a table/chair, and always sit with other people, if possible ---------------- 3. When the urge is very intense take a cold shower! it is not only shown to calm the mind but have many other benefits to overall health and energy.------------------------- 4. Think about your family or anyone else and if they were watching you. ----------------------- 5. When you feel the need to masturbate, take a brisk walk or jog. Always try to occupy yourself when the urge arises. --------------------------------------- 6. Exercise more and get out of the house. This is a great way to take your mind off everything.---------------------------------------- 7. Motivate yourself by reminding yourself that abstaining will increase sexual performance, because if you don't do it as much you will have more energy and be more easily aroused when you have sex with someone, whoever it may be, and also you will have a stronger orgasm since you are less desensitized to the feeling. For optimum hormone levels, keep masturbation to no more than once a week. Studies in men have shown that not masturbating for up to a week slightly increases testosterone, after this it goes back down.---------------------------- 8. Take your mind off it with (non-sexual) music.--------------------------- 9. Set tiny goals for yourself, start with going 3 days clean, the third day is the speed bump, get past that and you know that you're committed. Then go a week, then 10 days, then two weeks, then 17 days, etc. ---------------------------------- 10. Try fasting. Abstain from food or drink in a few hours everyday can distract your mind from sexual urge. Fasting will also act as a diet from stimulating food or drink for a certain period. If you do it regularly you will have better control upon your urge.----------------------

My daughter is staying away from home since last 10 years because of studies and work. Now she has completed her studies and want to do some job. We are telling her to do the job in our city so that we all can live together. But she doesn't want to come back and neither want to stay with us. She wants to be alone and away from us. She is marriage able but don't want to marry now. May be she is afraid of us that we will press her for marriage. How can we convince her that we want her to be happy and will never pressure her to go against her will. Should I stay with her for some time? Very confusing and worried.

Ask here what is the reason behind her decision of staying away from home? is it because you will press for marriage or she won't have freedom that she can have otherwise? she may have friends or boyfriend there that she doesn't want to come back? if growth opportunities are good there let her do job there and one of you can go and stay with her. It's been 10 years she is away and therefore is not that home sick and dependant. Let her do job where ever she wants to. If you really want her back due to some genuine reason explain her the bright side of staying with you. Ask her about her fears and clear her doubts. Don't worry just tell her what you all feel genuinely leave rest on her. Make her little emotional if it s for her good. All the best.

Pathological Gambling - 5 Ways to Control it

Pathological Gambling - 5 Ways to Control it

Pathological gambling is a situation in which a person is unable to resist the impulse to gamble and this leads to harmful consequences on the personal and social front of an individual. Pathological gambling is repetitive in nature, and a person cannot stop gambling by any means. The person would try to get money anyhow to gamble and he would feel uncomfortable or irritated at the idea of quitting gambling.

In order to control pathological gambling, it is advised that a person should quit gambling totally. Here are some measures which you can follow to control pathological gambling.

  1. Rehabilitation Programs: Both inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation programs can curb pathological gambling in a person. The program of a treatment center, if followed by heart, can cure the gambling problem. Moreover, by staying at a rehab for a period of time, a person will also stay away from gambling and will not get a chance to do so. Outpatient rehabilitation programs like group sessions and classes or one-on-one therapy sessions can also prevent gambling addicts from gambling without staying away from home.
  2. Twelve-step Program: The twelve step program by Gamblers Anonymous or GA may help a person overcome pathological gambling. For people who cannot afford long term rehabilitation programs, the twelve steps are ideal. Based on the same principles of the Alcoholics Anonymous, this program helps you to build a support group comprising of other recovering or recovered gambling addicts. Meetings are held every day, and you must attend these meetings to get help and encouragement.
  3. Cognitive behavioral therapy: Other than group therapies and support groups, psychotherapy also helps in dealing with pathological gambling problems. A one-on-one session with a therapist is very essential as gambling addiction arises from deep emotional issues. Clearing these issues would benefit the affected person. Treating the underlying issues may stop pathological gambling. Opening up to a therapist may be effective.
  4. Medication: In certain cases, medication is required to help get over pathological gambling. Gambling addiction may result on account of other underlying mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder. Treating the underlying causes with proper medication will cure the pathological gambling problem. Your impulse must be taken under control.
  5. Changes in lifestyle: Pathological gambling causes extreme loss of a person’s financial condition. A recovering pathological gambler must hand over all his financial responsibilities to a trusted family member or friend. Places such as casinos or gambling events should be avoided to restrict relapse.

Pathological gambling is a severe situation, which can cause great loss and harm to a person from many perspectives. One must take all necessary measures required to bring pathological gambling under control.

Hello, There are few food which helps you in boosting up your memory power, increases focus & concentration, so try to take more of these: 1.Choline: Good sources of choline include liver, milk, eggs and peanuts. 2.Vitamin B: B vitamins are not synthesized in the body, and thus need to be obtained from food. B-complex vitamins are water-soluble vitamins, which means that they are not stored within the body. In consequence, the B vitamins need ongoing replenishment. Vitamin B1 (thiamine) rich sources include unrefined grain products, ready-to-eat cereals, meat (especially pork), dairy products, peanuts, legumes, fruits and eggs. Foods that contain high concentrations of vitamin B3 (niacin) in the free form include beans and organ meat, as well as enriched grain and cereal products. While niacin is present in corn and other grains, the bioavailability of the nutrient is much less than it is in protein-rich sources. The role of vitamin B9 (folic acid) during pregnancy is vital to normal development of the nervous system in the fetus. Good sources of folate include liver, ready-to-eat breakfast cereals, beans, asparagus, spinach, broccoli, and orange juice.Animal protein products are a good source of vitamin B12 (cobalamine), particularly organ meats such as kidney or liver. Other good sources are fish, eggs, and dairy products. 3.Vitamin A: The foods highest in Vitamin A are any pigmented fruits and vegetables and leafy green vegetables. 4.Zinc: Zinc is a very important part of the brain as well; many regions of the brain, such as the cerebellum, and hippocampus have neurons that contain this nutrient.Zinc is needed to maintain normal Vitamin A levels in blood plasma. Sources of zinc are meats, certain seafood, whole grains, baked beans, oatmeal, milk (low-fat), cashewnut, almonds, kidney-beans, cheese, peas, spinach, seame seeds, pumpkin seeds, flaxseeds. Medication: Take homoeopathic medicine for increasing memory - Anacardium 200/ once daily.
