Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. T2 diabetes once diagnosed can only be controlled with appropriate treatment, diet and regular exercise. There is no cure. So if you stop treatment then blood glucose levels will go up again. Ideally when in control fasting glucose should be < 100 mg, Pp 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c%<6.8. Thanks.

One of the common doubt my diabetic people ask me about drinking whole milk or low fat milk

One of the common doubt my diabetic people ask me about drinking whole milk or low fat milk
One of the common doubt my diabetic people ask me about drinking whole milk or low fat milk... let me clear the doubt in scientific way..

In fact, there are good reasons to believe that whole milk, full-fat yogurt, cream, and high-fat cheeses may be better for you than their low-fat alternatives.

Reason #1:  Saturated fat is not harmful to your health

Reason #2:  Low-fat and non-fat dairy products are higher in casein

Casein is a very sticky protein in milk that is quite difficult for humans to digest.  Milk proteins are designed to nourish baby cows, who are outfitted with a special enzyme (rennet) that can break apart casein. Humans do not make rennet, which is one of the reasons why dairy products can cause constipation and other digestive problems.

Reason #3:  Low-fat and non-fat dairy products are higher in whey

Whey proteins raise blood insulin levels just as much as pure sugar does.  Even though lactose, the sugar that naturally occurs in milk, has a low “glycemic index” and therefore does not raise blood sugar very much, whey proteins trigger big insulin spikes in body and destabilize blood sugar and hormone levels, lead to carbohydrate cravings, fatigue, mood swings, and obesity.

Reason 4:  High-fat dairy products contain less protein

This means that people who have dairy protein sensitivities may tolerate them better.  People who have trouble with dairy foods are almost always reacting either to milk carbohydrate (lactose intolerance) or milk proteins (dairy allergy and sensitivity), not to dairy fat. This is why many dairy-sensitive individuals are able to eat butter and heavy cream, which are extremely low in protein.

Reason #5:  High-fat dairy products taste better

They improve the flavor, digestibility, and absorption of foods and are more satisfying, therefore you may find yourself naturally eating less.

Bottom line:  The lower the fat content, the higher the protein content

People who consume the most high-fat dairy products, have a 23-percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes than people who have one serving or less but there was no association between intake of low-fat dairy products and lowered type 2 diabetes risk.

Keep in mind that, you choose unsweetened varieties, since sugar and other refined carbohydrates raise insulin levels and disturbs blood sugar levels.
And MODERATION is the key for all the food .

Thank you for reading and i Hope it has helped you.

if possible send exact location of itch or pics. If you have fungal infection/itching, then home remedies or self treatment wont work to cure it, for fungal itch I will prescribe a schedule of anti fungal medication for your specific problem which have to be strictly followed or the fungii may develop resistance and come back later once cured. Hence never self treat fungal itches with any self prescribed medicines or it may lead to resistance and lifelong problem. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

Stress performance if plotted on a graph is a bell shaped curve some degree of stress improves your performance but if stress overshoots a point then performance declines. For reducing stress while studying 1. Make a to do list of topics before starting. 2. Prioritize the topics to be read and study accordingly 3. Take intermittent breaks of 10 min during studying 4. I have average body but I want to gain some weight, so what should I prefer to eat?

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
I have average body but I want to gain some weight, so what should I prefer to eat?
Hello, The food what and how you eat, makes the difference! For increasing your weight, concentrate on the below points ( if you don’t have any medical condition) which helps in gaining weight in a right way without harming your body. - Consume more healthy fats. Foods containing healthy fats are full of nutrients and also high in calories, making them a great option for weight gain. Foods containing plant fats should be your first option - this includes items such as nuts, seeds, peanut butter, avocados and olive oil. Foods containing healthy animals fats include lean meats and full fat dairy products - although if you have high cholesterol, you should probably stick to low-fat options. -Eat more protein. Good sources of protein include lean meat, fish and poultry, in addition to eggs, whole grains, dairy products and legumes. -Drink more calories. Try drinking a large glass of orange juice in the mornings (along with your normal breakfast). Drink a glass or two of full-cream milk throughout the day.Protein shakes will help you to gain muscle mass, particularly if you're working out. -Have 6 small and frequent meals in a day. -Gain muscle mass. It's a good idea to continue to exercise while you attempt to gain weight the healthy way. Strength training includes working with weights and performing exercises such as squats, deadlifts, bench presses, bicep curls, crunches, chin-ups and leg curls. Just keep in mind that the more you exercise, the more calories you will need to consume to replace those you lost while working out. This is where protein shakes and bars really come in handy. -Quit smoking. As it suppresses the appetite. -Stay healthy. The most important thing through the entire weight gain process is to stay healthy - eating a balanced diet and continuing to exercise throughout. -Take enough of rest and sleep for rejuvenation of the cells and tissues. -Think Positive which will help you in achieving your target of gaining weight. -Avoid taking unnecessary stress/ tension. Medication: Take Schwabe’s Alfaalfa Tonic and Five Phos., both thrice daily ½ an hour before meals for 1month.

How often should I visit you for checkups in order to stay as healthy as possible and avoid diabetic complications?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology

How often should I visit you for checkups in order to stay as healthy as possible and avoid diabetic complications?
Mr. Lybrate-user, visiting a doctor often is not required, what is needed is to follow instructions and treatment advised by him. For a diabetes patient following few things are important: 1) take all the prescribed drugs reguarly as advised, do not stop or change on your own or listening to unprofessional advise. 2) take restricted diet again as advised by the physician, in diabetes the dictum is" no feasting or no fasting" 3) consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and permitted fruits (100 ga day). 4) always use whole grain products, do not use refined flours, highly processed foods, junk foods, sweets, sweetened aerated drinks and pastries. 5) avoid alcohol and smoking 6) exercise daily for at least 1 hour, brisk walk is a good option. Joining a gym also is good. Plus a periodic check up of blood sugar is necessary. If you have t1 diabetes then insulin is the only option in such a situation blood glucose testing is to be done more often. Initially vists to doctor may be more often.

Yoghurt: Wonder Food

B.Sc, BHMS
Homeopath, Lucknow

Yoghurt

An ancient food, yoghurt has bad many great claims made about its healing properties. It is a valuable source of nutrients and it has the extra bonus of being an  excellent infection fighter.  Yoghurt is also very easy to make.

Whatever its healing properties, yoghurt is a nutritional boon. It is a good source of milk nutrients, such as protein, calcium, potassium and riboflavin. Yoghurt is recommended by many medical practitioners to postmenopausal women because it is such a rich source of calcium, which creates bone density, and helps to prevent the brittle-bone disease osteoporosis.

INFECTION-FIGHTING PROPERTIES

Research conducted at the Long island Jewish Medical Center, New York, has substantiated the claim that yoghurt is an effective treatment for vaginal yeast infections such as thrush. A group of women with a history of chronic yeast infections agreed to eat 225 grams ( 8 ounces) of ‘live’ yoghurt containing the Lactobacillus acidophilus culture each day for six months. As a result, they suffered far fewer yeast infections than a control group who did not eat yoghurt.

Research by Dr. George M. Halpern at the University  of California School of Medicine at Davis found that yoghurt may also boost the immune system. People who ate two 225 gram pots o ‘live’ yoghurt containing Lactobacillus bulgaricus each day for four months had significantly higher blood level of gamma-interferon, one of the body’s infecition-fighting substances. Further studies by Dr. Halpern found that consuming regular doses of yoghurt also cut the chances of catching a cold by about 25 percent, and reduced the symptoms of hay fever by a similar amount. Yoghurt is also thought to increase the activity of NK  (natural killer) cells in the body, which attack viruses.

Does only ‘live’ yoghurt work?

It was previously believed that only yoghurt which contained live cultures of Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus acidophilus and streptococcus thermophilus had disease-fighting  powers. But research by Dr. Joseph A Scimeca at Kraft General Foods in the United States has shown that even yoghurt that has had the majority of its live cultures killed by heating or freezing will still boost the immune system.

THRUSH

A common infection, thrush is caused by the yeast Candida albicans. Although it is always present in the body, certain conditions and doses of antibiotics, can cause the yeast to proliferate and produce the infection. Thrush usually affects the vagina but may also affect the mouth, throat and anal area. Vaginal thrush produces a thick white or yellow discharge and intense irritation; oral thrush causes white patches in the mouth and anal thrush is associated with a rash and irritation.

MAKING YOUR OWN YOGHURT

  • Yoghurt is cheap and very easy to make. All you need is a saucepan, a thermometer, a bowl or a vacuum flask, 570 of milk (any sort will do) and a tablespoon of ‘live’ plain yoghurt.
  • Pour the milk into a saucepan and heat to boiling point. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the milk to cool to 49*C. Add  1 tablespoon of live plain yoghurt to the milk as a ‘starter’ and mix thoroughly.
  • Pour the mixture into a bowl and cover it with non-PVC cling film. Alternatively, pour the yoghurt mixture into a vacuum flask and then screw down the stopper.
  • If you are using a bowl, wrap it in a towel and put it in a warm place. Leave the mixture undisturbed until it thickens, usually after eight hours. Be careful not to let the mixture incubate for too long as it may start to separate.
  • Pour into pots and eat immediately or refrigerate. Yoghurt will keep for up to five days. Save 1-2 tablespoons of your yoghurt as a ‘starter’ for the next batch. You may have to buy a fresh ‘starter’ after making a few batches.

TASTY VARIATIONS

If you want a yoghurt with a creamier texture or a fresh tasty dessert, follow these suggestions.

THICKER TEXTURE

To make a thick Greek-style yoghurt, line a large colander or sieve with gauze or muslin. Pour boiling water through the gauze to scald it. Place the colander or sieve over a bowl, pour in the yoghurt and let it drip overnight .

SWEETER TASTE

Add honey, chopped fruit, or unsweetened cooked fruit puree for sweetness or flavor after the yoghurt has been made.

ICED DESSERT

Frozen yoghurt made with low-fat milk provides a less fattening dessert than ice cream.

IDEAS FOR USING YOGHURT

  • Yoghurt is delicious eaten on its own, but combining it with other foods can provide a variety of nutritious snacks or meals. Choose low-fat varieties.
  • Add yoghurt to soups or casseroles to thicken and add creaminess. When cooking with yoghurt, use a low heat high temperatures can make the mixture curdle.
  • Use yoghurt as a tasty topping for muesli or fruit desserts, potato salad, baked potatoes and cold pasta dishes.
  • Add lemon rind and paprika to yoghurt to make a sauce for kebabs.
  • Mix fresh herbs and garlic with yoghurt to transform it into a delicious dip or dressing for salads.
  • Use yoghurt instead of cream in cake fillings and toppings.
