10 tips to look after your teeth
Good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist will help you maintain healthy teeth and gums.

Here are some tips to help you look after your teeth.

Brush at least twice a day. The best time to brush teeth is after meals. Choose a toothbrush with a small head for better access to back teeth. Soft bristles are kinder on your gums.

Use fluoridated toothpaste. Fluoride helps to harden tooth enamel and reduces your risk of decay.

Brush thoroughly. Tooth brushing should take between two and three minutes.

Floss your teeth daily. Use a slow and gentle sawing motion.

Limit acidic drinks like soft drinks, cordials and fruit juices. Food acids soften tooth material and dissolve the minerals in tooth enamel, causing holes (cavities or caries). In severe cases, teeth may be ‘eaten’ right down to the gum.

Limit sugary foods. Bacteria in dental plaque change sugars into acids.

Protect your teeth from injury. Wear a mouthguard or full-face helmet when playing sports.

Try to save a knocked out tooth. If possible, hold the tooth back in place while you seek immediate dental advice. If this is not possible, wrap the tooth in plastic or place it in milk and seek dental advice immediately.

Avoid using your teeth for anything other than chewing food. If you use them to crack nuts, remove bottle tops or rip open packaging, you risk chipping or even breaking your teeth.

See your dentist for regular check-ups. You should also visit your dentist if you have a dental problem such as a toothache or bleeding gums.

Does bleaching of teeth have harmful effects on teeth? Please advise.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist,
Does bleaching of teeth have harmful effects on teeth? Please advise.
Bleaching can be done once a year. Cause of discoloration ? Smoking, coffee, tea, drugs, aging, staining food (wine, blueberry, etc) genetics. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. You may need deep cleaning along with whitening (bleaching) procedures and / or artificial enamel filling. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Use Snowdent tooth paste for whitening until then. Apply SNOWDENT paste on the teeth. Wait for 10 to 15 min .Then brush your teeth with the same paste. Applying it overnight for better results. You may consult me in person. . DENTAL TIPS: - Visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

Get bleaching or teeth whitening once and if needed scaling also. Staining can also because of excess of tea, coffee and chocolate. Brush teeth regularly two times daily with soft bristle toothbrush. Rinse mouth after eating anything.

Why I used to get pains in my teeth even after brushing everyday twice?

BDS (GOLD MEDALIST)
Dentist,
Why I used to get pains in my teeth even after brushing everyday twice?
You may have cavity inside tooth. Get an x-ray done to know about the cause of pain. Pain can also be due to other conditions like gum disease, tooth abcess or fracture. So its important to get diagnosed properly to decide the treatment. For temporary relief from pain you can take ketorol dt 2 tabs dissolved in half cup of water. Or ibuprofen after meal. Brush regularly two times daily. Rinse your mouth after each meal.

Hi, I have been getting bad smell from my mouth please suggest me.

PG Hom, London, BHMS
Homeopath,
Hi bad breath or halitosis happens because of bad oral hygiene or because of some infection in the mouth. In rare cases it can also happen because of infection in severe infection in throat or even stomach. Visit a dentist if you are having any pain in the tooth or just for a regular floss. You can also use lemon peel or orange peel to rub on the gums as it reduces infection.
