All About Artificial Sweeteners

If you like your food sweet, but worry about calories at the same time, chances are you are leaning towards artificial sweeteners to solve your dilemma. The market is flooded with artificial sweeteners, so how do you choose one? And what are their pros and cons?

Besides weight control, artificial sweeteners are also used by people suffering from diabetes. But there is a debate as to how safe artificial sweeteners are, for normal people and diabetics alike.

You get multiple choices from aspartame to sucralose, present in stores. However, it is better to be educated about their benefits and disadvantages.

The pros and cons of most popular sweeteners are as follows:

1. Saccharin: This sugar substitute has been in the market for the longest.
Pros:
a) It has zero calories
b) It does not elevate the levels of blood sugar
c) 200-700 times sweeter than normal sugar
Cons:
a) It is a possible carcinogen (substances that cause cancer)
b) There is also the danger of saccharin acting as an allergen (substances that cause allergy)

2. Aspartame: It is the most commonly used sugar substitute. Almost all the food items that boast of being sugar-free have aspartame in them.
Pros:
a) 160-220 times sweeter than common sugar
b) A small amount goes a long way, so calorie intake is lesser
Cons:
a) Headaches, depression and cancer have been linked to aspartame use
b) Increased hunger

3. Sucralose: This sugar substitute is derived from sugar itself. It is gradually becoming the most popularly used sweetener as it is found in almost all cooked or baked foods.
Pros:
a) It is heat resistant, so it is used liberally in cooking and baking
b) It has very few calories
Cons:
a) Weight gain is still possible
b) It has chlorine in it, which is a carcinogen

4. Neotame: This is a new invention and is chemically related to aspartame.
Pros:
a) 7000 -13000 times sweeter than common sugar with zero calories
b) Apparently, it is safe for consumption for teens, children and even for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
Cons:
a) There isn't enough research done on Neotame, therefore very little is known about it
b) Since its chemical composition is closer to aspartame, there is much controversy about "neotame" affecting people the same way as aspartame

Can I know in a month what r the days when have sex have low chances of pregnancy. It's before I have period or after I have periods. Can you explain me in detail.

MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
It depends on your menstrual cycle. If its 28 days long then 14th day is the midcycle and 5 days before and 3 days after that is unsafe period means avoid sex between 9th to 17 day of cycle. Although these are indicated for most of the women, it varies individually. There are other methods which must be taken under the account.

Hi doctors My doctor told me to do at least 5iui before going for ivf .Due to I have pcos prob and hubby sperm count low (varicose vein in testicles left side) and one relative told me to do acupuncture to regulate period and 'll conceive soon suggestions about this method please.

Hi doctors My doctor told me to do at least 5iui before going for ivf .Due to I have pcos prob and hubby sperm count ...
Hi i understood your concern First of all, Its true that you should go for at least 5-6 cycle of IUI before going to IVF. And ya there is a no proven evidence that accupuncture and etc techinique will regulate period. If you have PCOS than best is exercise and at least reduce 10% of body weight that will definately help. Regarding LOW semen count of husband if its very low means less than 10 milli/ml than directly go for IVF/ICSI. Success rate with IUI is low in such condition. happy to help you Thanks

At 19 , your weight is just okay but you are a growing up teenager with more demand on resources of good diet like simple proteins like toned milk & curds & a katori of assorted nuts to get good fats & good proteins. Fortoning up breasts , swimming is the best exercise but if facility is not available , do rowing , streching of arms , weights & simple walks for exercise & relaxation of entire body. you can do massage with lotion to tone up the muscles, wear a sport bra to feel less self conscious.

Could you be at a risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)?

Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery, DGO, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Gurgaon
Could you be at a risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)?

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) refers to the infection that occurs in the female reproductive organs. It happens when sexually transmitted bacteria infect the uterus, ovaries or fallopian tubes on spreading from the vagina. Generally, the cervix plays the role of preventing the bacteria from entering the vagina and infecting the reproductive organs. But when the cervix becomes exposed to an STD, it loses its power to put a stop to the spread of these microorganisms to the reproductive organs.

What causes this condition?
STDs like gonorrhea and chlamydia have been found to be responsible for about 90% of PID cases.

Some of the other causes include

  • Abortion
  • Childbirth
  • Pelvic procedures

The condition is only detected later in life when you face difficulty in getting pregnant or have chronic pelvic pain complaints. If you experience symptoms like vomiting, high fever, pain in the lower abdomen and instances of fainting, you should immediately seek a doctor.

What puts you at risk for PID?
Certain factors may put you at a higher risk for PID and these are:

  • Instances of sexually transmitted diseases like Chlamydia (an STD that can occur from anal, oral or vaginal sex) and gonorrhea (a condition that causes discharge from the vagina or urethra) can make you prone to developing PID.
  • Douching on a regular basis can increase your risk of PID as it disrupts the equilibrium of good and bad bacteria in your vagina, and may hide the symptoms of the condition as well.
  • Even a previous history of PID can increase your chances of having another episode of PID.
  • Compared to older women, teenagers who are sexually active are more prone to developing PID.
  • Having multiple sexual partners can also put you at a greater risk for PID and STDs.

Both of you should need evaluation for infertility. First you must get your semen analysis. 50% cases are due to male partner. Once your reort found allright, your wife should be investigated.
