MBBS, DNB - Obstetrics and Gynecology, DGO
Gynaecologist, Delhi
You should have taken I pill. But as you have not, wait for normal periods. You never know you might have missed your ovulation time, don't worry. If you do not have periods on time. Wait for 5 days. Do a pregnancy test and then go to a gynaec. Even stress causes delay in periods.

If no bleeding, only watery discharge, you must get your cervix (mouth of uterus) checked by gynecologist.

Folic Acid - Why It Is Important For Pregnant Women?

Folic Acid - Why It Is Important For Pregnant Women?

Folic acid is the synthetic form of the vitamin B9 and more commonly known as folate. For a pregnant woman, it is extremely important to consume folic acid in adequate quantities. It has the ability to prevent any birth defect, related to brain and spinal cord. It essentially protects the neural tube, which shapes into the spine and the brain. Since neural tube defects can occur in the first few weeks of pregnancy, it is essential that a woman starts consuming folic acid right before she endeavors to conceive.

What are the benefits?
Many researchers are of the view that folic acid is a key component for safeguarding the baby from certain diseases such as cleft palate, certain heart defects and cleft lip. Apart from this, folic acid mitigates the risk of pre-eclampsia in a pregnant lady. Pre-eclampsia is a disorder related to blood pressure and affects close to 5%of all pregnant women. Folic acid also helps a would-be mother from a type of anemia. It is responsible for giving birth to DNA and increasing cell growth of the baby.

Consumption amount of folic acid:
In order to save the baby from any neural defect, it is essential that a pregnant woman consumes at least 400 micrograms of folic acid on a daily basis. Since many women conceive without planning, it is therefore suggested by experts that all women entering the childbearing age should consume folic acid. Some groups such as the National Institute of Health, US suggest that folic acid consumption for a pregnant woman should be 600 micrograms per day. If you are taking any supplements, check the label to see the folic acid quantity present in it. If a woman is consuming prenatal vitamin as prescribed by a doctor, she should not consume any folic acid from outside, since it already has a folic acid content of around 800-1000 microgram. To abstain from any side effects, it is strongly advised not to consume more than 1000 micrograms of folic acid per day..

When is extra folic acid needed?

  1. If you are carrying twins
  2. If your previous pregnancy involves a neural tube defect
  3. If you have a genetic condition called methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase
  4. If you are suffering from diabetes or consuming any anti-seizure medications

What are the sources of folic acid?

  1. Certain grain products such as pasta, cereals, rice and bread
  2. Certain food supplements available in the market
  3. Naturally occurring vegetables such as spinach, turnip greens, avocado, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts
  4. Citrus food or the juice extracted from them without adding any sugar component to it
  5. Certain nuts and peas

If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dietitian-nutritionist.

I pill is a hormonal steroid. It will affect your periods. If you want to regulate it, then you either take I pill regularly, or stop taking it and use other methods like condom while having intercourse. Take Ashoka Q 10 drops in one cup of water once in a day for 1 week daily.

I have a baby of 4 years, he has A+ blood group & I am AB-. My husband is O+. Is there any problem in 2nd baby. One laproscopy surgery was done for ovarian cycst 3 years before the delivery of first baby. I am 34 years old. What is the limit of age so that I try for the 2nd baby.

Don't delay 2nd pregnancy. Get repeat usg to know whether there is any cyst or not. All the cysts do not need treatment. Now regarding blood group, did you receive any injection (anti rh-d) after delivery of 1st baby. In that case, chance of affection of 2nd baby is low. Still after pregnancy you need close observation and serial monitoring of blood and sometimes usg to detect the baby's condition by the earliest.

Hello, don't worry this may happen sometimes as she got her periods after 1.5 month so there may be bleeding like this. Do intimate with your wife between 10th to 18th day of her menstrual cycle. Take care.

Two months ago I visited a call girl in a massage parlour. Though I had a protected sex, being idiotic, I gave her oral. From that very night I had been feeling cough. Then I got sore throats. It's been two months but not cured yet in spite of having paracetamol and antibiotics purchased from local pharmacy. I checked that I have got white spots in my swollen throat. Have I got gonorrhoea? Is it curable? Please help.

Please avoid taking self medication, which will harm your body. You are having these symptoms since two months and still experimenting which again will harm the body and will make your condition difficult to treat. So consult an ENT surgeon, who will examine and will advise appropriate treatment. Good luck.

Dear, Menorrhagia is unusually heavy or long menstrual periods. Generally, the menstrual period lasts from 3-5 days and normal flow is between 80-100 ml. If it exceeds this indicate the menorrhagia. Heavy bleeding can lead to an iron deficiency, and ultimately result in anemia other side effects like acne, excessive hair growth and rapid weight gain. Visit us at www.Malhotraayurveda.Com

Dear Lybrate user. There will not be any problem at all. Having sex is just like a 20 minutes brisk walk or 5 minute jogging. You just loose energy. If you have enough stamina, you can have sex multiple time. Take care.

The first and most vital thing to do when trying to get rid of an itchy vagina is to take a deep breath, and try to relax. As stress can make having a vaginal itch worse, or cause recurring vaginal itching. Plus, it can increase the chances of developing an infection.
