I recommends the following basic principles to keep in mind if you wish to gain weight in a healthy way: increase your appetite by eating more to gain weight. But do it step-by-step and not by stuffing yourself too much at one go. Add one extra chapatti or more rice than you normally consume, or you even start with fruits by eating an extra one every day. Carbs are needed to gain weight but include healthier options like banana, potato, mango, whole grains, rice, etc. Instead of sugar-rich foods, chocolates and other junk foods. In order to increase your muscle mass, it is essential to do weight training 4-5 times a week for an hour. You can vary the intensity depending on your capacity. Consume protein-rich foods after you workout to increase muscle mass and eat good fats like nuts and seeds in your diet. Eating a handful of pumpkin or flaxseeds is a good way to give your body the fat intake it needs. Though junk foods like vada pav or burgers are loaded with calories, they only increase body fat and not muscle mass which is not the right way to go about. Here is a healthy weight gain diet plan which includes the right foods one should consume to put on kilos in a healthy manner. But along with this, you also need to engage in physical activity for at least 30 minutes every day. It is also essential to have at least 6-8 glasses of water to flush out toxins from the body.

4 ways to gain weight

4 ways to gain weight

A very low body mass index can be due to many causes including genetic, developmental and hormonal disorders and other issues with absorbing nutrients in the body. A low body mass index may also be owing to a high metabolism rate. Here are a few healthy ways to gain weight according to different requirements:

Know your calorie needs

- Calculate your resting metabolic rate with the formula - RMR = 10* weight (kg) + 6.25* height (cm) - 5* age (yr) + x [For men; x=5, for women; x = -161] Your BMR tells you how much minimum calories you will burn if you rested an entire day.

- Account for your activity by using your RMR as BMR (Base metabolic rate) and calculate your daily calorie needs by the following formulae:

  • BMR * 1.2 - If you are sedentary
  • BMR * 1.375 - For light exercise
  • BMR * 1.55 - Moderate activity
  • BMR * 1.725 - High activity
  • BMR * 1.9 - Intense activity

Diet to follow

- Gradually increase your calorie intake
- Eat healthy and timely
- Have a balanced diet with heavy foods like - starchy vegetables, dense fruits, added oils and creamy soups
- Have foods rich in protein, avoid watery fruits and veggies
- Avoid trans-fats
- Do not binge, pace yourself through your diet regime
- Have dietary supplements and protein shakes

Build muscle to increase body weight

- Include weight training in your daily regime
- Compensate for extra calorie lost in training
- Do not over do it, rest is equally important in building muscle

Things to remember

- Stop eating junk food, eat healthily
- Hydrate yourself well
- Rapid weight gain may cause stretch marks
- Be careful when choosing fatty foods as overindulging in them can lead to heart diseases and type 2 diabetes
- Overeating may cause bloating, stomach aches and cramps

Eat meals at frequent intervals. Eat a mid meal between each main meal. Avoid junk foods. Include dairy, eggs, sprouts, fruits in your meals. Avoid alcohol and smoking. Exercise at least thrice a week. Even if you were to take medicines or supplements. They will not work in isolation. You have to have a calorie and nutrient dense meal.

lybrate-user diets are always the second step, first step is changing your lifestyle, I am giving some natural remedies, they are long but if you read it you will gain lots of benefit. Hello. It is not possible to provide a specialized diet for your health without having a look on your blood tests which will provide us with your information and help us further to help you in a specialized manner acutely. I request you to send me your blood reports and chose the duration of our diet plan and I may provide you exactly the individualized diet which will be according to your own body type. Naturopathy believes that you need not to consume any man-made chemicals for attaining a desired body shape and a satisfactory health & wellness. Just embrace the Mother Nature and merely by changing a bit of your life style and eating habits 70% you can be your own doctor. I am suggesting you some tips for your Energy, Health and wellness all you have to do is follow them regularly without any break. 1) It is strongly advisable that you eat fresh food. Consume your food within 48 minutes, because after that it starting decaying which in turn adversely harms your body. Avoid outside food and eat fresh homemade food preferably. Decayed & rotten or a day old food is also usually kept in the refrigerator which gives out 12 CFC gases, we don’t realize this fact but after a time long contact of food with harmful gases are slowly decaying our body from inside also. That is why it is advisable that you consume your food within 48 minutes from the time it is cooked. 2) In the morning start consuming lukewarm water right after you wake up & sitting in sukhasaan (chaukdi) it is advisable to even do rinsing with the lukewarm water in your mouth and gulp it after that. Drink your water sip by sip instead of drinking it in speed. This process is done for the detoxification and cleaning of your stomach/intestines that has everything to with your health issues. After this your stomach condition will remain intact at pH7 (which is not alkaline or acidic in nature but neutral). 3) Avoid processed food, Maida (white flour), sugar and its products as well as refined oil/double refined oil. Use pure oil of mustard (sarso), peanut, coconut, cow ghee, sesame. When you put 10 to 12 chemicals in these oils then they become refined oil and bring almost 68 diseases along with weight gain and bad health. Don’t follow what this television advertisement says about refined oil. It is all marketing. EAT PURE OILS 4) The alkaline or saliva (laar) of your mouth should mix with the acid of your stomach. This is only possible if you are drinking water sip by sip, slowly each time you consume water. This will not just help you in attaining a proper health but will keep you away from other health and weakness problems, which comes from the acids produced in stomach 5) Other advice is that don’t drink water after your meals (lunch, dinner, breakfast, or any mini meal). Drink water after 90 minutes of meals. Drinking water after your meals reduces your digestion, and as you know if food is not digested it will produce acid, which in turn will increase your weight. 6) You should avoid late night dinners at any cost and make sure you are following a routine while having 3 main course meals of the day. It is said that the best time to consume dinner is before sunset, but it is not possible daily in the present scenario so it is strongly advisable that you do not consume anything heavy in your dinner and make sure your dinner is your lightest meal of the day while you can consume a heavy yet healthy breakfast. 7) The best time for breakfast is from sunrise till 2 and half hours, for example if sun is rising at 6: 00AM in the morning in your city than the best time for the consumption of breakfast is 6: 00AM till 8: 30AM approximately. 8) Make sure you have a 4 to 6 hours gap only in between your main meals. For example if you consumed your breakfast at 8 then make sure you have your lunch between 12: 00pm and 2: 00pm 9) Eat jaggery (gurh), mishri (not from mill), boora (not from mill) instead of sugar and chemical substitutes of sugar and its products. 10) India is a tropical country and for such kind of atmosphere the most beneficial food we can consume living here is vegetarian diet. As non-veg diets decreases the amount of Hydrochloric Acid in the body which in turn decreases the power of our digestive as well as immune system of our body. 11) Eat fresh fruits and green vegetables (seasonal) 12) In between your meals have fruits and nuts as snacks but make sure they are fresh and consumed before they start losing their nutritional values. 13) Lastly I would suggest that make sure you have your head in the south or east direction while you are sleeping, these sleeping positions are accurate and retain your energy throughout the day. I suggest that you even do surya namaskar in the morning after you wake up it is a one in all exercise for a healthy body furthermore make sure you are following a routine and not having a sedentary lifestyle. Thanks.

I want a diet plan for improving my fitness. I'm exercising harder in my home itself but I don't follow any diet plan so can any doc here give me a best diet plan which makes my bones and muscles to get stronger?

I want a diet plan for improving my fitness. I'm exercising harder in my home itself but I don't follow any diet plan...
Hi, If you’re aiming to gain some strength and build muscle, you must follow the points mentioned below: 1.Start exercising. If you’re a beginner, focus on bodyweight exercises like push up, pull up and squat. The basic push up and chin up are invaluable exercises you can do with very little equipment. Increase their difficulty by adding reps or affixing weights to your legs. 2.Consume a balanced diet. It's important to eat big meals to fuel muscle growth while you're training. You’ll need to eat healthy, whole foods that will nourish and restore your muscles. Consume all types of fruits, vegetables, grains, oils and dairy products. 3.Take adequate rest. Many people take this step lightly, but it's absolutely essential when it comes to gain strength. That means you won't be able to work out as hard or lift as much as you otherwise would, not to mention you'll be more prone to injury if you're feeling sleepy. Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night, possibly more depending on your individual needs, during heavy workout periods. 4.Increase protein intake. Protein proves to be the most essential nutrient when it comes down to gaining strength or building muscle. Therefore, consume all types of protein from both veg and non veg food items. Chicken breast, egg whites, fish, pulses provide you all the protein you need without containing any unnecessary fat. 5.Focus on compound movements. Compound movements are those which engages more than one muscle group. Exercises like bench press, squat, dead lift are great examples of compound exercises to gain strength quickly. 6.Lift heavy. If your main aim is to gain strength, you’ll need to lift heavy weights in the gym and thus, lower the repetitions of your sets. Moderate-rep sets are important when training for muscle size. However, to build strength, you're going to have to train with heavier weights, meaning you'll do fewer reps. 7.Limit cardio to once or twice per week. Cardio exercises like running, swimming, and biking are great ways to keep your endurance good and your circulation healthy. However, they aren't the best exercises you can do if your goal is to gain strength. Weight training requires loads of energy, and if yours has already been used up by a long run or bike ride, you won't have enough left over to give weight training your best shot. Limit cardio to once or twice per week so your energy reserves are ready to expend on building strength.

Doctor I am very thin advice me Which types of exercise is good for gaining weight and attractive body.
Hi, There are certain yogasanas which will help you to gain weight. Yogasanas for gaining weight: Bhujangasana: Lie flat on your stomach. Place your hands on the side and ensure that your toes touch each other. Then, move your hands to the front, making sure they are at the shoulder level, and place your palms on the floor. Now, placing your body’s weight on your palms, slowly raise your head and trunk. Note that your arms should be bent at your elbows at this stage. You need to arch your neck backwards, in an attempt to replicate the cobra with the raised hood. Hold the asana for a few seconds, while breathing normally. Feel your stomach pressed against the floor. With practice, you should be able to hold the asana for up to two minutes. To release the pose, slowly bring your hands back to the sides, and rest your head on the ground by bringing your forehead in contact with the floor. Place your hands under your head. Then, slowly rest your head on one side and breathe. Repeat this pose thrice for best results. Contraindications: This exercise should be avoided if you suffer from hernia or have had an abdominal surgery recently. This asana should be avoided at all costs if you are pregnant or have a back injury. 2. Vajrasana: Kneel on your knees, making sure your calf muscles lie close together, and your big toes are crossed. Lower your upper body, placing your buttocks on your heels and your thighs on your calf muscles. Place your hands on your knees and ensure your upper body is erect. Breathe normally. Concentrate on how you inhale and exhale. You can close your eyes while you try to calm your mind. It might be a good idea to hold this position for about five to 10 minutes. If you feel a strain or pain in your legs, release the position. With regular practice, you could actually meditate in this position for as long as 30 minutes. Contraindications: It is best to avoid this asana if you are suffering from a knee problem or have undergone a knee surgery recently. If you are pregnant, make sure you keep your knees apart when you assume this position, or you might end up adding stress and pressure on your abdomen. 3. Pavanamuktasana: You need to lie flat on your back, ensuring your feet are together and that your arms are placed beside your body. Take a deep breath and bring both your knees towards your chest, pressing your thighs on your abdomen, while your hands clasp your lower legs, packaging your whole body. Take another deep breath. Lift your chest such that your chin fits into the gap between your knees as you exhale. Hold the position for as long as you are comfortable, adjusting the grip of your hands as you inhale and exhale while you hold. Rock up and down or roll from one side to another about five times before you release the pose. Exhale and release the pose. Repeat the pose thrice, leaving a 15-second interval between repetitions. Contraindications: This asana must be avoided if you have heart problems, hernia, high blood pressure, hyperacidity, slipped disc, back and neck problems, or testicle disorders. If you are in your second and third trimester of pregnancy or if you are menstruating, it is better to avoid doing this asana.

A person having weight below the range that is considered normal as per his/her height and age is believed to be underweight. Many persons may be underweight simply because of their genetic makeup. Others may be underweight because of other factors such as eating less or taking a diet insufficient in nutrients. There are a few medical conditions that make a person lose weight and fall in the underweight category. These medical conditions include IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid), tuberculosis, crohn’s disease, and liver problems. A person who is stressed or depressed may also lose weight. Homeopathic medicines are extremely helpful for persons looking to gain weight. Homeopathy offers a wide range of medicines that can help underweight persons gain weight in a healthy way. The selection of Homeopathic medicines for gaining weight is based on individual case presentation. The medicines help gain weight while at the same time building immunity. In fact, Homeopathic medicines work by correcting the underlying medical condition that has caused the weight loss in the first place, thereby improving the overall health condition of the person concerned. You can easily take an online consultation for further treatment guidance and permanent cure without any side effects

I wanted to gain weight, plzz help me, tell me some home remedies to gain weight quickly or the name of those tablets...
Hi lybrate-user here are 6 ways to gain weight healthily: 1. Eating 5 to 6 meals a day in order to gain weight, start eating 5-6 meals a day by breaking them into parts. Eating a lot at once may cause indigestion if the body fails to absorb all nutrients. Eat in small amounts, even if you are not hungry and there will be an increase in appetite from day to day. The aim should be to have a generously portioned breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as two to three snacks in between. 2. Start weight training if you build your muscles through weight training, it will convert the extra weight into lean body mass and also stimulate your appetite. The extra muscle increases the rate of metabolism. When you start exercising you will often experience extreme muscle soreness but it goes away in 3-5 days. 3. Load up on protein besides weight training, a protein-rich diet can help you gain mass. Eating a meal heavy in protein shortly after finishing exercise can be highly effective in adding extra pounds to your body. However, a diet focused only on lean protein is not helpful. It is important to make sure that your diet has plenty of fat in it. Eat foods rich in protein like cheese, meat, eggs, etc to gain weight in a healthy manner. 4. Workout your entire body a lot of people focus only on training the muscles on their arms, chest and shoulders and this is a grave error. Firstly, it will give you a disproportionate body; and it will make you prone to injuries. Therefore, it's important to work out the entire body for a complete and balanced look. 5. Drink your calories to reach the calorie requirement only by eating may be tough. Drinking milk, milkshakes or protein shakes with little or no sugar can be an effective way to load up on the calorie requirements. 6. Be patient and believe in yourself gaining weight quickly in a healthy manner is unrealistic. Every body type is different and it takes months to gain weight. Living healthy by eating the right diet will increase your strength. It is also important to keep following the routine even if you don't see any gains. Caution: junk food and fried foods must be avoided; although have a tendency to add more fat to your body but are very low in vitamins and minerals which are essentially required to keep you really fit. If you would like to consult with me privately, please click on'consult' related tip: the most powerful way to put on weight - snacking right.

To gain weight you should eat more calories than you burn. Plus not only you have to eat calorie dense food but you have to keep in mind that what you are eating is healthy too. In the process of weight gain you do not want to put weight in an uneven manner and look unhealthy rather than looking bright and healthy. 1. Start with changing your lifestly. Start working out if you are not active. The biggest myth that prevails now a days is that thin people do not need to work out. This is wrong. When you challenge your body, it is forced to grow. But this growth can only be possible if you are eating enough food to let the body absorb and grow in size and muscles. 2. Eat Healthy – Stop drinking and smoking too much if you are indulged in it. Limit your intake of junk food, pepsi, sugary stuff etc. Do not at all starve yourself. Make it a habit to eat something healthy every 3 hours. This means you have to eat 6 small meals in a day. Your Daily food intake should ideally consist of – a. Have plenty of nuts, dry fuits and seeds. Almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, figs, dates and raisins. They are full of healthy fats needed by a human body. B. Good amount of fruits and vegetables – Bananas, apples, pomegranate, green leafy vegetables. Fruits and vegetables helps in absorption of food in the body and together, completes your daily nutrition need. C. If you are a non- vegetarian - Eat eggs, chicken etc. D. Eat whole grains – Try to have multi grains spread throughout the day. Wheat, brown rice, oats, bajra, daliya etc should be taken in multiple meals in a day. E. Eat Sprouts – Chana and moong which are full of protein and nutrients. F. You can supplement your diet with good quality multi-vitamin capsules. If you are lacking in protein, you can buy a high quality whey protein and have it with banana shake twice a day. G. You can take natural food items like wheat grass which is full of essential nutrients which helps in weight gain. Try to be patient while you are on the process of weight gain. Results take time to show. Just follow this regimen and you will soon start seeing the results.
