What type of diet should we prefer in case of the person suffering from jaundice?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
Jaundice is indicative of the malfunctioning of the liver. It may be caused by an obstruction of the bile ducts which discharge bile salts and pigment into the intestine. The simple form of jaundice, the pre hepatic jaundice can be treated well with a good diet. Recovery may however, be slow in serious cases caused by obstruction or pressure in the bile ducts, the hepatic and post hepatic jaundice cases. The patient should rest in bed till the acute symptoms subside. He should not be given any solid foods for the first few days of the treatment. He may be given plenty of fresh fruits and vegetable juices. The idea is to provide a high carbohydrate based diet as the liver is infected, and minimize the strain on the liver. Suji or dhalia porridge, soft custards, curd rice are other soft easy digestable foods. Fruits and vegetables are highly recommended, and can be used to prepare juices. Those like lemon, grapes, pear, tomato, carrot, beet and yes, sugarcane are preferable. Sugarcane juice, mixed with lime juice, being high carbohydrate can hasten recovery from jaundice. Half a glass of this juice, mixed with half a lime, may be given to the patient twice daily. It is, however, very essential that the juice must be pure and preferably prepared at home in a hygienic manner. Resistance is low in jaundice and any infected beverage could only make matters worse. It is also important to prepare this juice fresh each time and avoid storing it. After the severity of the decease has passed, the patient may be given a simple and well-balanced diet. The emphasis should be on fresh juicy fruits such as orange, apple, pineapple, grapes, papaya and mango, and vegetables such as spinach, fenugreek and carrots. The patient should avoid all fats like ghee, butter, cream and oils for at last two weeks and thereafter their consumption should be kept down to the minimum. Digestive disturbances must be avoided. No food with a tendency to ferment or putrefy in the lower intestines like pulses and legumes should be included in the diet. Other effective home remedy is the use of green leaves or radish (muli). The leaves should be pounded and their juice extracted. It should be strained through a clean piece of muslin before use. About 60 to 80 ml. of this juice, depending on the age, should be given to the patient three times daily. It induces healthy appetite and proper evacuation of bowels. But remember, these are all home remedy, they do help but do not substitute the need for rest and medication as prescribed by the doctor. Also remember to avoid alcohol until recovery. Alcohol may be poorly tolerated for some months and cause minor relapses - it should be totally avoided for at least 3 months or longer until the liver has fully recovered.

I am getting much sleepy from few days and I feel lazy lazy all the time. What should I do to be active.

General Physician, Mumbai
Dear, it is best not to depend on sleep medicines for sleep disturbance as in long run, they lead to dependency and increased disturbance. Never rely on alcohol for sleep. Some people use alcohol to help them sleep, but that's not a good idea. At first, drinking alcohol may make you sleepy and help you fall asleep. But when you drink alcohol, you are more likely to wake up later in the night and have a hard time falling back asleep. This can leave you feeling tired the next day. The following tips help one to easily get into sleep: a) have bath regularly in evening after coming from work or before going to bed. B) do not engage mind in active work or stressful talking at night before bed time. C) do not engage mind in too much of computer work in night before bed time (for example, do not do stock market work in night). D) do not read or view illicit or pornographic material at any time preferably. E) do not take heavy meals in night. Best is to have heavy breakfast, lighter lunch and lightest dinner to maintain stomach rhythm which affects sleep. Vegetarian diet is best for good sleep. F) do not over engage mind in television in night. G) do not smoke cigarette, chew tobacco, tobacco containing masala, or similar intoxicants which can disturb rhythm of mind and disturb sleep cycle. H) no tea or coffee in night (preferably cocoa and caffeine containing drinks should be totally avoided for best results). I) listen to relaxing music and even then if you do not get sleep, then hear soothing stories or nice talks from our rich vedic literature. You may stream audio music and talks. J) read books which not only calm the mind but also nourish the thinking process, such as from our rich oldest vedic literature.

Asthma is serious and should be discussed with your doctor. But there are also home remedies you can try to reduce the severity and frequency of your attacks, and to help manage your symptoms when they happen

An asthma attack can occur when an irritant?usually a common substance like smoke, cold or dry air, pollen, mold, or dust mites?meets a set of temperamental lungs. Hormonal fluctuations, stress, and anger can also trigger an attack. Sometimes there?s no apparent cause. Your difficulty in breathing occurs because the bronchi, the tubes that allow oxygen into your lungs, go into spasms. Accompanying them may be coughing and tightness in the chest. The spasms trigger the release of histamine and other chemicals that cause inflammation and the production of airway-clogging mucus.
For severe asthma attacks?the kind of tightness, wheezing, and shortness of breath that can be really frightening?most people do just what the doctor recommends. Often, that means quick action with an inhaler containing a drug such as albuterol. If that?s what you use, and it works, don?t give it up. And always have your doctor?s telephone number near at hand in case of severe attacks. But for non-emergencies, you?ll want to figure out ways to help yourself breathe easy.
Breathe easier right now
? When an asthma attack comes on, stay calm. Panic can make your symptoms worse. Help yourself along with this visualization trick: Close your eyes. As you inhale, see your lungs expand and fill with white light, and feel your breathing become easier. Repeat this exercise twice more, then open your eyes.
? In a pinch, have a strong cup of coffee or two 355-mL cans of caffeinated cola. Caffeine is chemically related to theophylline, a standard medication for asthma. It helps open airways.
Natural remedies for asthma
? Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine have been using the herb ginkgo to treat asthma for centuries. If you want to try it, take 60 to 250 milligrams of standardized ginkgo extract once a day. One recent study suggests that this herb interferes with a protein in the blood that contributes to airway spasms.
? Magnesium may make you feel better. Much research suggests that magnesium relaxes the smooth muscles of the upper respiratory tract. The recommended dose is 600 milligrams a day.
Help asthma by fighting inflammation
? Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fatty fish such as tuna, salmon, and mackerel, work much like a class of asthma drugs called leukotriene inhibitors. These drugs stop the actions of body compounds that cause inflammation in the airways. Take six 1,000-milligram capsules a day in divided doses.
? Evening primrose oil is rich in an essential fatty acid called GLA, which is converted by the body into anti-inflammatory substances. Take two 500-milligram capsules three times a day. Take them with meals to avoid stomach upset.
? Bioflavonoids, the compounds that give fruits and vegetables their Technicolor hues, have powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties. One of the best-known bioflavonoids, quercetin, inhibits the release of histamine. Take 500 milligrams of quercetin three times a day, 20 minutes before meals.
? Turmeric, that yellow cooking spice used to flavor Indian curry dishes, is a first-rate anti-inflammatory. The compounds it contains inhibit the release of COX-2 prostaglandins, hormone-like substances involved in inflammation. Mix one teaspoon of turmeric powder in a cup of warm milk and drink this up to three times a day. Turmeric capsules and tinctures are also available.
Keep a record
? In a date book, make a note of everything you eat for a month. Also record your asthma symptoms. While food allergies are rarely associated with asthma, occasionally there is a connection. Check your diary against your symptoms to see if anything you?re eating increases the frequency or severity of your attacks.
? If you take asthma medication, get a peak-flow meter, available at drugstores.
