I am 72 years and Type II diabetic. Two main teeth from both sides of my bottom mouth were removed because they were moving long back. Now one main tooth from top right side and bottom left side are also moving. I want to get these two teeth also removed and go for new ones i.E.Six teeth total. What is the present method of fixing new teeth and what should be appx expenditure. Thanks in anticipation of your reply.

Dentist, Kanchipuram
Hi Sir, We can replace the missing teeth by two options one is a removable one & the other is a fixed one. Removable ones are cheaper but not advisable. Fixed ones are called bridges. But to have a bridge the last teeth should be present.Without the last teeth it would be difficult to do bridge.Treatments vary based on the position of the missing teeth. Only a nearby dentist can guide you properly after clinically examined you. Regards JAI

I have ulcers in my mouth. I visited many doctors but it was not helpful. So can you please help me out.
The common causes of ulcer are bad digestion and vitamin deficiency. The other causes include hormonal changes, change in dietary pattern, increased level of stress, change in your medicine, girls sometimes gets ulcers before mensuration cycle. To treat the ulcers, start becosule tablets 3 times a day for 5 days. Apply dologel or mucopain on the ulcer 3 to 4 times a day. You can also apply glycerine. These are for the temporary relief. For permanent solution, drink plenty of water, eat more of fruits and raw vegetables, reduce your stress level and check for any other factors that are causing you ulcers.

Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need deep cleaning along with whitening procedures (bleaching or laser) and / or artificial enamel filling. You may consult me in person too. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. What can be reason of light black lines forming I teeth of 9 month old baby. How can we get rid of it.

What can be reason of light black lines forming I teeth of 9 month old baby. How can we get rid of it.
Hello Lybrate user, teeth erupted in a nine month old baby are upper and lower incisors and blackening in these teeth may be due to extrinsic stain. The cause of this extrinsic stain may due excess iron intake through iron fortified formula but without examining the teeth of baby and taking a history about medications and the cereals and formula, it is not possible to tell you the exact cause of this dark line. You better find a pediatric dentist and visit him or her. Hope this helps.

Drinking a cup of tea everyday is healthy for the teeth and gums as it contains high amounts of flouride and flavonoids which prevent harmful bacteria from sticking to the teeth.

Often and at regular intervals while eating I cut my inner side of cheeks. From next day it gets reddish and pains too hard. I cannot eat even roti properly. If any thing touches that particular portion it pains a lot. The pain exists for at least 7 to 10 days.

By your symptoms it appears to be cheek biting means your teeth sharp cuspal edges are hurting your cheek. I advice you to visit your dentist so that he can roundoff sharp/pointed edges of your teeth which is creating a problem also he may prescripe you some ointment to apply locally over your cheek, so that wound healing get fast. Mean while avoid consuming spicy and hot food/beverages.

Hi if your teeth are still sensitive, and you are certain of the area involved, you need to see the dentist again. There might be decay between the teeth that is often difficult to detect and maybe overlooked, esp. When other more obvious lesions are present. A more detailed examination necessitated by persistent symptoms after such symptoms might well lead to the detection of such problems. You also have the option of a second opinion. Often, a different person might be able to look at your problem more objectively, and, maybe locate the issue. In the meantime, you can use any desensitizing toothpaste 2 to 3 times a day to help with the symptoms.

Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations to decide upon treatment. You may need root canal treatment. Until then apply clove oil on the decayed tooth. Rinse frequently with mouth wash. Advise c. Amox 500mg 1-1-1, thrice daily, t. Metrogyl 400mg 1-1-1, thrice daily, t. Imol 1-1-1, thrice daily (contraindicated in conditions with gastric ulcer, asthma, wheezing, allergy), c. Becosules 1-0-0 once daily all for 3 days only. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

On Jan 15th I had met with accident and I lost my upper first two teeth and also from left third one is damaged but its I had root canal Now my question is Dental bridge for for teeth is better or implant? If I go for dental bridge can I bite hard items while eating? Which is the best quality dental bridge for front 4 teeth? Thanks in advance. :-)

Dentist, Trichy
Weather u can do implants or bridges can be determined dep on ur age, bone density n various other factors. Consult your dentist for evaluation of the same. And coming to biting hard food, its not advisable be it metal ceramic or full ceramic bridge or implants. Long term biting with dental bridge or implant may cause cracks ,ultimately leading to breakages. Food cut into pieces n eating s advisable. Full ceramic bridges are recommended as far as aesthetics is prime concern.

Dental Health in Pregnancy

Dental Health in Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a transformation phase in itself -it brings with it changes to almost all body systems. The oral tissues and the teeth are also affected significantly. Extra precaution is required to maintain regular oral health and avoid severe decay and/or gum disease. If not avoided, the dental infections can cause severe systemic infections and require strong antibiotics, x-rays, minor surgeries, and root canal therapy which may not be safe during pregnancy.

Higher levels of estrogen during pregnancy in the blood lead to a lot of visible changes in the oral cavity - higher incidence of tooth decay, gingival and periodontal inflammation, and even minor benign tumours in some cases. The notorious morning sickness plays havoc with the person's oral hygiene habits, thereby further complicating the situation.

Prior to pregnancy: A pre-pregnancy dental check-up to look for gum health and decay would go a long way in a healthy pregnancy, from the dental point of view at least. A thorough scaling and screening for cavities done before pregnancy can help avoid dental visits during the term, other than for routine checkup.

Pregnancy: If that pre-pregnancy visit could not happen, then visiting your dentist should be one of the first things to do as soon as you have confirmed your pregnancy. At this stage, no dental treatment can be done. Any elective procedures (cosmetic, etc.) will have to be done only after delivery. If the dentist identifies no cause for worry, that is great news. However, if there are any causes for concern, like a decay, the non-invasive treatment should be done at the earliest. When you are pregnant, note the following from a dental point of view:

  1. Oninvasive treatments like minor fillings can be done
  2. Regular scaling and polishing is not a problem
  3. Let the dentist know about all the medications you are taking
  4. Visit the dentist every 3 to 4 months for a regular check-up
  5. Follow good oral hygiene practices including, brushing, rinsing, and flossing
  6. Switch to a bland toothpaste in case of severe morning sickness
  7. Watch your diet - the teeth forming in the fetus require nutrition through you, so ensure adequate intake of minerals like calcium and potassium
  8. Avoid sweets and sticky/chewy foods that can lead to plaque formation

Though dental procedures can be done during the 4th to 6th month, they are best avoided, which can be done with better planning and some minimal care.

After delivery: After the delivery of the baby, please visit your dentist to ensure you have again ensured there is no emergent dental condition requiring attention. Resume your regular dental care after delivery.
With a little planning and extra care, dental health can be managed nicely during pregnancy with minimal to no pain. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dentist.
