Smelly armpit is definitely a cause for concern and can lead to social withdrawal. There are various reasons like improper hygiene, excessive caffeinated drinks (coffee, softdrinks) and excessive intake of foods like onion and garlic leading to smelly sweating. Also, sometimes there can be bacterial or fungal infection in the underarms that can cause bad odour from armpits rather than a smelly sweat. If you sweat excessively, use topical aluminium hydroxide lotion at night in the affected area. A dusting powder can be used during daytime. Diluted vinegar washes also help in balancing the ph and controlling infections, thereby reducing the smell. Drink adequate amounts of water and maintain a good hygiene like regularly clipping the underarm hairgrowth. A good dermatologist should be able to help you in diagnosing the cause of smelly underarms. There are various medicines and procedures now available to tackle this embarrassing condition. Hope this helps you. All the best.

Difference Between Hair Implant and Hair Transplant

Hair is a person's crowning glory and to witness bald spots emerge or thinning hair can be a nightmare for many. Thankfully, with advances in cosmetic surgery, this is not something you need to settle for. With a hair implant or a hair transplant surgery, you can easily cover bald spots and thicken thin hair. So which one should you go for? At the onset, hair implants and hair transplants seem to be synonyms.

While both address baldness and thinning hair, this is not the case. Getting a hair implant involves implanting synthetic hair into the scalp while a hair transplant involves the removal of hair follicles from one part of the scalp and implanting them into another part of the scalp.

Here are a few ways the two procedures differ:

  • Look: Hair implants involve synthetic hair and hence can never look completely natural. A hair implant is often compared to a wig that has been fixed to your scalp. On the other hand, a hair transplant uses your own hair and hence merges with your existing hair. With time, no one will be able to tell if you've had a hair transplant while with hair implants.
  • Grooming: You can cut synthetic fibers implanted in your scalp, but hair implants will not grow like natural hair. Thus, if you undergo this procedure to address thinning hair, you will have to settle for the same hairstyle for quite a long time. Hair transplants will grow and fall like the rest of your hair. Also if a hair follicle that has been transplanted falls, it can re-grow, but if a hair implant strand falls, it will need to be replaced with another synthetic follicle. Thus the chances of needing follow up surgeries are higher with hair implants than with hair transplants.
  • Rejection: The chances of your body rejecting a synthetic fiber are much higher than the chances of your body rejecting a hair follicle transplant. Thus, the chances of infections are higher with hair implants than hair transplants.
  • Results: Hair implants have instant results whereas when it comes to a hair transplant, it can take up to 8 months to notice visible results. In the meanwhile, the hair follicles may temporarily fall from the area the transplant was taken from as well.

Today, between the two, a hair transplant is more preferred than a hair implant. Before taking a decision between the two, go over the pros and cons with your doctor and see what form of treatment is more suitable to you.

With all its moisturizing action, aloe vera is one of the most effective skin soothing agents. When you rub the gel over an itchy spot, it helps reduce the skin irritation in that area and provides quick relief from itching. Just break a leaf from the plant, cut it lengthwise using a knife and using a spoon, scoop out the jelly-like substance inside. Apply a little of this gel to the itchy area and leave it on for a few minutes.

I am suffering from the pimples on my body. I try all medicine but no effect on my body.

MBBS, DNB (Dermatology)

I am suffering from the pimples on my body. I try all medicine but no effect on my body.
Body acne commonly occurs on the neck, chest, back and arms— it is slightly different that facial acne and may be more difficult to treat.  Here are some treatment recommendations to help clear up your skin. Bathe right after you exercise. Working up a sweat might be behind your chronic acne breakouts. Sweat during exercise is a major trigger of body acne, "when you sweat a lot, you usually develop some pimples." To remove all the oil on your body use a medicated wash containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. Wear loose fitting clothes preferably cotton. Short term oral antibiotics to get inflammation under control,  retinoid creams are helpful. Severe boils may require oral Isotretinoin shrinks oil glands, helps prevent clogs, reduces inflammation, and reduces acne bacteria.

I have been suffering from extra hair growth. I have also underwent laser. What s the permanent solution?
Lasers is the best solution for excessive hair growth. However, it's not the permanent solution as it causes permanent hair reduction and not permanent hair removal. Also, I hope that there are no hormonal abnormalities as that can cause excessive hair growth leading to failure of therapy.

Dear Lybrate User, Pimples/ Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease which develops due to blocking of the hair follicles in skin. These blockages occur due to 4 abnormal processes: 1) Excess sebum production due to androgens 2) Excessive deposition of the protein keratin leading to comedone formation 3) Infection of Propionibacterium acnes (P. Acnes) bacteria on the hair follicles 4) Local release of pro-inflammatory chemicals in the skin. In order to stop the formation of pimples the aforesaid four causes should be terminated. Now the bitter truth is neither can you stop the overproduction of androgen or keratin protein nor can you stop the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals because all these processes takes place internally in your skin. However you can stop the accumulation of P. Acnes bacteria on your skin by preventing your skin from getting oily. Always keep a handkerchief with you whenever you go outside. You should wipe off the slightest amount of sweat from your face as soon as you perspire On entering your room from outside wash your face with an oil-free, non-moisturizing face wash. Take a low carbohydrate diet. Do some exercise daily. Drink a lots of water to avoid constipation. Avoid pricking the pimples or popping the sebum as it may lead to black pigmentation & permanent scar formation. You can also take Homoeopathic CALCAREA PHOS 200, 5 drops, thrice daily, in empty stomach Also you can apply Homoeopathic Mother Tincture BERBERIS AQUIFOLIUM Q on the dark spots on your skin which are produced after the resolution of the pimples. Kindly note that this medication may not be sufficient enough to take care of your problem. These medicines are based on the symptoms of your diseased condition & these medicines need to be complemented by further deep-acting remedies in order to permanently eliminate the underlying cause of the disease. So I would suggest you to consult me privately via Lybrate as it is very necessary to diagnose the proper underlying cause of your problem if you are wishing for a permanent relief from your problems. A permanent annihilation of the underlying cause of the disease will not only provide you relief from your troubles but it will also cease any chance of further relapse of that particular disease condition.
