Hi Good Evening! How to control snoring? Does pranayam help on it? Thanks and Regards Smit.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Lifestyle changes to stop snoring Lose weight. If you’re overweight, dropping even a few pounds can reduce fatty tissue in the back of the throat and decrease or even stop snoring. Exercise can also help to stop snoring. As well aiding weight loss, exercising your arms, legs, and abs, for example, also leads to toning the muscles in your throat, which in turn can lead to less snoring. There are also specific exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles in your throat (see below). Quit smoking. Quitting is easier said than done, but smoking irritates the membranes in the nose and throat which can block the airways and cause snoring. Get help with quitting here. Avoid alcohol, sleeping pills, and sedatives because they relax the muscles in the throat and interfere with breathing. Talk to your doctor about any prescription medications you’re taking, as some encourage a deeper level of sleep which can make snoring worse. Establish regular sleep patterns. Create a healthy bedtime ritual with your partner and stick to it. Hitting the sack in a routine way together can help you sleep better and often minimize snoring. Bedtime remedies to help you stop snoring Clear nasal passages. If you have a stuffy nose, rinse sinuses with saline before bed. Using a Neti pot, nasal decongestant, or nasal strips can also help you breathe more easily while sleeping. If you have allergies, reduce dust mites and pet dander in your bedroom or use an allergy medication. Keep bedroom air moist. Dry air can irritate membranes in the nose and throat, so if swollen nasal tissues are the problem, a humidifier may help. Change your sleeping position. Elevating your head four inches may ease breathing and encourage your tongue and jaw to move forward. There are specially designed pillows available to help prevent snoring by making sure your neck muscles are not crimped. Sleep on your side instead of your back. Try attaching a tennis ball to the back of a pajama top or T-shirt. (You can sew a sock to the back of your top then put a tennis ball inside.) If you roll over onto your back, the discomfort of the tennis ball will cause you to turn back onto your side. Alternatively, wedge a pillow stuffed with tennis balls behind your back. After a while, sleeping on your side will become a habit and you can dispense with the tennis balls. Try an anti-snoring mouth appliance. These devices often resemble an athlete’s mouth guard and help open your airway by bringing your lower jaw and/or your tongue forward during sleep. While a dentist-made appliance can be expensive, cheaper do-it-yourself kits are also available. Throat exercises to stop snoring

If you experience dizziness associated with vertigo then be aware of the possibility of losing your balance, which can lead to falling and serious injury sit down immediately when you feel dizzy. Use good lighting if you get up at night. Walk with a cane for stability if youre at risk of falling. Work closely with doctor to manage your symptoms effectively. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

I snore a lot while sleeping. Multiple times gets up at night. Feeling drowsy all day. How to avoid or reduce snoring.

DNB (Respiratory Diseases), MD - Tuberculosis & Respiratory Diseases / Pulmonary Medicine, Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases (DTCD)
Allergist/Immunologist, Thrissur
Yours is a classical case of OSAS. It is not only snoring but throat block occuring at night during deep sleep due to your tongue falling back into your throat which is very narrow as you are obese. You should immediately follow this: 1. Go to a pulmonologist in Bangalore and do Sleep study this week itself. It will show how back is your problem during sleep. 2. Reduce weight by all methods 3. You may most likely need a machine to prevent throat block during night. It is costly but once your problem is rectified in 6 months time; you would be able to give it back to another patient through your doctor.

Hi, have bilateral sub-total eardrum perforation with dry ears. Only once in a while right ear discharge that lasts only few hours without any pain past year the hearing and tinnitus was worse but now can hear well except that I miss hearing 1-2 words in a sentence or misunderstand a word or two sometimes and mild tinnitus mostly at night. Is it necessary to get the eardrum fixed or leave it as it is for the mean time. Also, can the hearing deteriorate? thanks.

MS - ENT(Gold Medalist), MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Delhi
First of all get an audiometry (hearing test) done that will give an idea about type and amount of hearing loss. And I am telling if you are having bilateral subtotal perforation then it is useless to take any medication bcz nothing can cure this. You should go for surgery otherwise your condition and hearing will worse with time on recurrent infection.

BAMS

Hi, please follow these tips to stop snoring: - reduce your weight if you are obese. - perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - sleep on sides instead on back. - elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - clear the nose before going to bed. - establish regular sleep pattern. - keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in the nose and throat. - perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - anti snoring appliances can also be used.

Sir, my wife aged 65 yrs. She has arthritis on the back of the neck as per Neurologist and as per MRI taken by him. Due to this she feels vertigo/giddiness. What medicine you recommend for permanent treatment. Thanks

MBBS, MS - Orthopaedics
Orthopedist, Delhi
Requires detailed examination and investigation. Preliminary investigations suggested: hb, tlc, dlc, esr, blood sugar fasting & pp, uric acid vit d urine r/e x-ray of the affected part. Anyway it may be tried sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick mattress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Do hot fomantation paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck, back, knee & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. Do not ignore it. Let it not become beginning of a bigger problem. Make sure that patient is not allergic to any of the medicines that he/she is going to take. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, inform.
