Good evening doctor. My baby is turning 4 months on this Sunday, the 22nd. All vaccines have been given as per schedule viz. Rotavirus, IPV etc. However, kindly advise on the pneumococcal vaccine. Doctor informed us that its a dose of 3 injections and an optional one and not a mandatory one. Please guide us and oblige. Will there be any adverse effects if not taken? Regards.

This is a very pertinent question and many parents in india would have the same questions in their mind. Let us get down to the basics first. Vaccine is something which gives your baby extra protection against a particular disease. The human body is equipped with an immune system, which normally protects from disease causing germs. Vaccines only strengthens the immune system. Taking a vaccines does not guarantee that your baby would not get the infection, but it decreases the risk markedly. Similarly not taking the vaccine, does not mean your baby is certainly going to have the disease, but it definitely reduces the risk significantly. So giving the vaccine is surely an advantage. The disadvantage is the price, as the pneumococcal vaccine is quite costly compared to other vaccines. The government can not bear the cost for all the eligible children in india, so as for now parents have to pay if they wish to give this advantage to their baby.

What take feed for 6 month baby.

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician,
What take feed for 6 month baby.
At this age, start 1 solid feed, 1top molk feed and 5-6 mother's feeds. Start with semi-solid dal, daliya, khichdi, mashed banana/potato, curd etc. If you want, you can add cerelac too, but not necessarily so. Remember, do give 5-6 spoons of water after the solid meal only.

My daughter is 11 months old. She can't sleep without breastfeed. N whenever she wakes up. What is right for her? Shall I avoid n how?

MBBS, MD
Pediatrician, Gurgaon
Yes,its correct age to reduce frequency of breast feeds.ideally you should give breast feed s three times ie eight hours interval.in between child will need almost sixty to eighty grams of Charles as porridge in three intervals. Please feed child as per age in months to develop correct changeover from breast to semisolid meals. Three months old should be breastfeed at three hry.but six month old should be given after 4-6 hrly.and add thin watery cereal soup two times a day.

I have a 4 weeks baby boy. He des breastfeed. My breast milk is not sufficient. Can I give him lactogen1?

General Physician,
I have a 4 weeks baby boy. He des breastfeed. My breast milk is not sufficient. Can I give him lactogen1?
It is very important for mothers to know that infants need nothing more than breast milk in the first 6 months of life. Anything new must be introduced only after 6 months, and in a gradual manner along with breastmilk. As for milk, after six months, mothers can start using infant formula milk as, it is the safest alternative to breast milk and it also contains more nutrients than in cow’s milk. Animal milk must be introduced to infants only after 12-18 months of age because, unlike mother’s milk, it lacks adequate nutrients, contains no antibodies that protect against infections, it is also a poor source of iron and can be harmful to the baby’s developing kidneys. As for choosing between cow’s milk and buffalo milk, cow’s milk is a better option to start with, as buffalo milk is rich in fat and difficult to digest. Indigestion can lead to diarrhea. While introducing milk, start by adding a few teaspoons of the pasteurized milk to soups, halwa and some room-temperature curd. If he/she tolerates this well, then over time the quantity can be increased with careful monitoring. When introducing buffalo milk, mothers must first boil the milk, let it cool and then remove the layer of cream before feeding the baby.

Does your toothpaste really changes your tooth colour???

MDS - Orthodontics, BDS
Dentist,
Does any one in the world wants a yellow teeth? or
Any one in the world does'nt want a white teeth?
These are the two wishes makes the tooth paste business as number one in the world.
Every one should know why there are so many shades of teeth.
Does a yellow teeth means ugly teeth.
The colour of your teeth is an optical phenomenon. It depends on the thickness of the enamel. The inner layer of the tooth is called dentin, which is yellow in colour. If the overlying enamel is thin the colour of dentin is visible through the enamel giving the tooth yellow colour. If the enamel is thick the underlying dentin is not visible so tooth appears white. The whiteness of tooth depends on the thickness of enamel. Genetic also plays a role. Usually a fair complexioned person will have yellow shade and a dark complexioned person will have white shade.
So the colour of your teeth is not going to be changed permanently by your tooth paste.
Yellow or white teeth keep it clean.

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician,
My children 11 months old he is suffering from motion since 2 days. What to do?
Hello the most common cause of loose motion in this age is viral infection. The main aim of management is to prevent dehydration by giving plenty of fluids. Give zinc and probiotic for early recovery. Continue feeding. If loose motion persists, the oral acceptance decreases or you notice any decrease in urinary frequency get him to the pediatrician immediately. Regards.
