I'm a 19 year old male. It's been almost 4 years since I visited a dentist and I'm ashamed about it. I feel terribly afraid to visit a dentist due to the fear of pain and needle phobia that i have. I finally found that there was something called sedative dentistry and I have learnt more about it on the internet. This gave me a little hope and looking forward to get treated. Vulnerable and urgently in need of help.

Yes there is. But its used for pedo(small childrens) in most of the cases or in case of a surgical procedure in case of adults. For small procedures like simple root canal treatments or simple extractions there is no need for sedation.Visit your dentist he will explain you the procedure and will guide you to over come your fear. Nowadays due to advance technology its not painful as it was years back. You make take diazipam before treatment . It will help you to over come your anxiety.

Complete Smile Makeover

Complete Smile Makeover

Your smile holds great importance as it is one of the first things that a person will notice about you. A smile can leave a long lasting impression on people and is very important for self-esteem and confidence. Smile makeover is a process, which considers your facial appearance, tone of skin, color, width, length or shape of your teeth along with the gum tissues and lips in order to improve your smile. A smile makeover can be done according to your preference and choices.

Here are the areas on which a complete smile makeover concentrates and improves upon:

  1. Teeth Color: For a perfect smile make over, natural, composite restorations can be used to replace silver and amalgam dental fillings. Teeth whitening process can be undertaken to improve upon the color of the teeth, which are stained or dull. The color and shade of teeth are taken into consideration for several things such as crowns, bridges or dental implants. White, glossy teeth give a youthful, fresh smile. The whitening is done to such an extent that it complements your other features.
  2. Spacing and Alignment of Teeth: Teeth which overlap each other, have gaps in between or have a crooked appearance can be straightened, and the alignment can be modified by orthodontics or invisalign.
  3. Replacing Missing Teeth: Missing teeth affect your appearance and your smile by a great deal. The risk of tooth decay is also enhanced. For an ideal smile make over, missing teeth should be replaced with dentures, bridges or other modes of dental implants.
  4. Balancing Uneven Teeth: In case of uneven or chipped teeth with cracks on them, you can undergo cosmetic correction procedures to make your teeth appear balanced. In case you have a gummy smile, you can undergo recontouring procedures for improvement of your smile.
  5. Modifying Lips and Cheeks: An unshapely face with wrinkles makes your smile unpleasant. This can be corrected using several procedures, which include orthodontics and oral maxillofacial surgery. Correction of your lips and cheeks will improve your smile to a great extent.
  6. Tooth Length: Long teeth are responsible for a fresh, youthful smile. In case of short teeth, smile makeover techniques such as reshaping or lengthening of teeth can be undertaken. This will improve your smile. The proportion of your teeth can also be corrected to give you a perfect smile. The texture of the teeth can also be modified as a part of the smile makeover.

Treatments Used for Smile Makeover:

  1. A dentist can use an entire range of treatment to achieve your ideal smile makeover. These include:
  2. In-office, professional teeth whitening, Can brighten teeth up to 9 shades in a single visit
  3. Porcelain veneers, Thin, natural-looking, ceramic shells that mask imperfections such as cracks and chips
  4. Dental crowns, Tooth-shaped prosthetics that go over misshapen or worn teeth
  5. Invisalign, Clear, removable, custom aligners that gradually straighten minor alignment issues
  6. Dental bonding, Resin bonded to teeth that conceal cracks, gaps, and chips
  7. Gum contouring, Removing excess gum tissue to improve appearance and conformity of smile

A complete smile makeover allows you to correct and improve your smile, according to your preference. This process involves several cosmetic methodologies, the proper execution of which gives you an enhanced smile.

- use a soft toothbrush -- and brush properly! brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and after meals. Hard brushing can further damage the soft tissues of your mouth. - floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to remove more plaque. - control bleeding by applying pressure to the area with a cold compress. - rinse with salt water or hydrogen peroxide to keep the area clean. Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol, which can dry out your mouth. - stay away from smoking and other tobacco products, which can aggravate bleeding gums. - eat a balanced diet and limit snacking between meals. Carbohydrates and sugars feed dental plaque. - try an oral irrigation device, commonly known as a" water pick, to clear debris from around the gum line. - you may need deep cleaning along with surgical curettage or gum strengthening procedure. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser. You may consult me in person.

I've red dot spots on the roof of the mouth and it is irritating with my throat, ears and inside the nose. Please suggest me a medicine.

PG Hom, London, BHMS
Homeopath, Mumbai
Hi Ekam, The commonest cause of the red spots on the roof of the mouth is severe infection in the throat. However it is very necessary to rule out other possibilities for this condition. It will be better if you consult your dentist as some blood tests should ideally be done to find out the reasons for spots.

Flossing is as important as brushing on a daily basis. Taking the floss all the way down to the point where the teeth and gums meet is the appropriate way of doing it.

•Eat a healthy, balanced diet and avoid eating strongly flavoured or spicy food. •Cut down on sugary food and drink, as it can increase the amount of bacteria in your mouth. •Reduce your alcohol consumption. •Stop smoking. •Cut down on coffee. •Drink plenty of water to help prevent your mouth becoming dry. •Chew sugar-free gum after eating, to stimulate the flow of saliva. This will help clean away any remaining food particles. •Don't use toothpaste to clean your dentures, as it can scratch the surface and cause stains. •Clean your dentures thoroughly using soap and lukewarm water, denture cream or a denture-cleaning tablet. •Use a separate toothbrush to clean your dentures. •Make sure you visit your dentist for regular check-ups. Having regular dental check-ups will ensure that any plaque is removed from your teeth, particularly in areas that are difficult to reach. •Your dentist can recommend the best way to clean your teeth and gums, and point out areas you might be missing. They can also identify any signs of gum disease and ensure early treatment. •Gastritis, lung & sinus infection may also be the cause of bad smell in the mouth. 90% of bad breath is due to a dirty tongue. •If your bad breath is caused by a gastrointestinal problem, such as an H. Pylori infection or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), you may be referred to a gastroenterologist. •Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may be a warning sign of gum (periodontal) disease. Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque on teeth. •You may need deep cleaning & fill tooth cavities with artificial enamel filling. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash until then. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. You may consult me in person.

I am suffering from pain full mouth ulcer from last few years. Kindly suggest me.
The exact cause of most mouth ulcers is unknown. Stress or tissue injury is thought to be the cause of simple mouth ulcers. Certain foods, including citrus or acidic fruits and vegetables (such as lemons, oranges, pineapples, apples, figs, tomatoes and strawberries), can trigger a mouth ulcer or make the problem worse. Sometimes a sharp tooth surface or dental appliance, such as braces or ill-fitting dentures, might also trigger mouth ulcers. The exact cause of most mouth ulcers is unknown. Taste and health at the same time - eating a piece of cheese after meals helps in pulling away some of the plaque from the mouth and also tiny leftover food particles. And since it contains calcium, it adds to bone health and teeth health too.

Foods which can be eaten without any difficulty like dairy products, soft breads, softer grains, sea food and soft meat and soft cooked vegetables should be consumed in higher quantities than hard foods while undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Our natural colour of teeth is pale yellow or yellowish white. So does it mean i dont need to go for further treatment for my teeths ?

BDS

Our teeth colour should match our skin colour so too white or too yellow r not needed. If u feel ur teeth are yellowish white than u need no whitening treatment but cleaning of ur teeth is must every 6 months coz that process will remove the calculus and tartar
