Mr. lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. If you have already developed diabetes, then unfortunately it can not be reversed but can certainly be very well controlled and you can live an absolutely normal life. So do not get disappointed. It needs a bit of disciplined lifestyle to be followed. Which means taking restricted diet, that gives exact amount of calories based on your actual body weight, extent of daily exercise and blood glucose levels. Plus taking appropriate medications. If there is change needed in the present treatment that should be done. So if you are interested please come with following details in a private conversation: present fasting, PP blood glucose levels, HbA1c%, dietary pattern, medications with dosage and extent of daily exercise, then I will be able to guide specifically. Thanks.

Since when are you noticing this change? It appears you have developed diabetes, mostly T2. Please get a HbA1c% test done, which will give an idea about whether this phenomenon has been there for a long time. Looking at your height and weight you have a BMI of 25.45 kgs/M2, showing a mild overweight. You need to exercise regularly and also reduce weight to about 66 kgs. There is a need to take antidiabetic drug treatment. In this communication we are supposed to give only general guidelines, no prescriptions are to be given. So please come in a private conversation with all the details. Thanks.

My mother is 46 years old, she has come to know that she is suffering from thyroid. please give me suggestion what to eat and what not to eat and other tips.

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. Lybrate-user, by saying" she is suffering from thyroid" are referring to hypothyroidism? because thyroid is a normal gland present is all of us, which produces hormone thyroxine. So please clarify that. If she has hypothyroidism, then she has to avoid soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, peanuts, mustard and coffee. She should use whole grain flour for roti and chapati, avoid maida and products made of that. Should consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads and fruits. Should exercise daily for 1 hour and take a restricted diet. Thanks.

Hi doctors. My mom is suffering from thyroid since long days. I can't see her like this. Is there any permanent treatment for this? If yes, than how it's possible and where should we go?

Hi doctors. My mom is suffering from thyroid since long days. I can't see her like this. Is there any permanent treat...
For hypothyroidism only treatment is to take adequate dose of thyroxine for lifetime. There is no option other than this. If treatment is helping then tsh levels should be around 3 to 4 milli units/ml, that usually helps in controlling all the symptoms and the person lives absolutely normal life.

Diabetes - 6 Natural Remedies that Will Help You Manage it

Diabetes - 6 Natural Remedies that Will Help You Manage it

Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder that results in higher level of blood sugar in the body. It is assuming epidemic proportions and India has become the new diabetic capital with more than 50 million diabetic people. The main problem with diabetes is that it does not completely go away and there is a whole myriad of issues that it brings along with it. Heart attack, stroke, eyesight problems, delayed wound healing, nerve damage and impotence. Therefore, diabetes and by that we mainly mean blood sugar level has to be managed so that there is a delay in onset of the associated conditions and/or reduced in severity.

Ayurveda refers to diabetes as Prameha (excessive urination) and Madhumeha (sugary urine) and has identified close to 20 forms of the disease. According to Ayurvedic belief, each disease is caused due to imbalance in kapha, pitta, and vata doshas and diabetes is caused by all these, predominantly by kapha. With any stream of medicine, management of diabetes involves two tracks – one is lifestyle changes and the second is medications.

Lifestyle changes include the following:

  1. Diet: Reduce the amount of rice, sugar, potato, sweet fruits, maida, deep fried foods, and red meat. Protein-rich foods like lentils, soya, green leafy vegetables and fish should be increased. Diet plan should change to small, frequent meals instead of binge eating.

  2. Exercise: Include 30 minutes of regular exercise into your daily routine if you have a diabetic predisposition.

  3. Others: Avoid smoking and alcohol, ensure sufficient sleep, avoid sleeping during day time, improved foot and eye care, periodically check sugar levels and manage stress levels.

Medication

Ayurveda has a whole lot of home remedies which have proven to be very effective against diabetes:

  1. Jambhul: Eugenia Jambolana whether eaten raw or juice extract has been shown to have beneficial effects in managing sugar levels and cholesterol.
  2. Gymnema sylvestre: Used to manage diabetes for over 2000 years, it reduces sugar cravings and is being touted as the future for diabetes treatment.

  3. Bitter gourd (Momordica charantia): It has 3 components that give it strong antidiabetic properties. The charantin reduces blood sugar levels; the polypeptide has insulin-like effects; and lectin that again has hypoglycemic effects.

  4. Bel (Aegle marmelos): Also known as wood apple, leaves of the plant are shown to have antidiabetic properties. 5 to 10 leaves can be chewed on a daily basis to help control blood sugar levels.

  5. Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum graecum): Consuming 10 g of fenugreek seeds soaked in water increases the amount of insulin produced, thereby increasing sugar breakdown.

  6. Neem: Chewing about 4 to 5 leaves in the morning on an empty stomach helps to control blood sugar levels. Alternately, neem leaves powder is available which can be dissolved in water and consumed.

Hi, Share his reports to know about the exact figure. When you eat excess calories and fat, your body responds by creating an undesirable rise in blood glucose. Making healthy food choices and tracking your eating habits can help you manage your blood glucose level and keep it within a safe range. For most people with type 2 diabetes, weight loss also can make it easier to control blood glucose and offers a host of other health benefits. Make your calories count with these nutritious foods: -Focus on the healthiest carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes (beans, peas and lentils) and low-fat dairy products. -Fiber-rich foods. Dietary fiber includes all parts of plant foods that your body can't digest or absorb. Fiber can decrease the risk of heart disease and help control blood sugar levels. Foods high in fiber include vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes (beans, peas and lentils), whole-wheat flour and wheat bran. -Fish can be a good alternative to high-fat meats. For example, cod, tuna and halibut have less total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol than do meat and poultry. Fish such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, sardines and bluefish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which promote heart health by lowering blood fats called triglycerides. However, avoid fried fish and fish with high levels of mercury, such as tilefish, swordfish and king mackerel. -Eat'Good' fats such as avocados, almonds, pecans, walnuts, olives, and canola, olive and peanut oils — can help lower your cholesterol levels. Eat them sparingly, however, as all fats are high in calories. -Avoid high-fat dairy products and high-fat animal proteins (red meat, lamb, beef, pork, egg yolks, shellfish, liver). -Trans fat which are found in processed snacks, baked goods, shortening and stick margarines and should be avoided completely. -Include other aspects of lifestyle modification, such as increasing physical activity and losing weight (Always keep a small carbohydrate snack, like fruit or a fruit drink, on hand in case your blood sugar gets low). If you're not active now, start with 10 minutes of exercise at a time. Gradually work up to 30 minutes a day. *****Ask him to keep a check on his blood sugar regularly after every 6months*****
