Hi librate user, nice to hear from you, to avoid getting diabetes you should keep a watch on your diet, exercise and body weight. If you don't have diabetes in your family, if you are eating healthy food and doing regular exercise and maintaining your weight, there are very little chances you will get diabetes. Regular exercise should include cycling/ swimming/ brisk walking / jogging / any other outdoor sports activity for at least 30-40 minutes per day, 6 days per week. Thank you.

Mr. lybrate-user, Diabetes mellitus can only be controlled, there is no cure. Treatment has to continue for life time. Depending on type of diabetes, either oral anti-diabetic drugs or Insulin injections are given. In addition there has to be strict dietary control and regular exercise to maintain normal weight and improve internal insulin action. Thanks.

Mr. lybrate-user, A person with diabetes has to take a balanced diet, which includes carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Rice is one of the carbs, it can be taken by a diabetic person. In south India, where rice is the staple diet (Kerala, TN, & AP, South Karnataka), it is consumed by every one. Foods to be avoided are sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries, bakery items, other maida items, sweetened aerated drinks, sweet corn containing products, highly processed food products and high fat milk products. Total caloric intake has to be based on ideal body weight, extent of daily physical activity and blood glucose levels. Fruits like papaya, water melon, pomegranate, orange, sweet lime, apple, pear and guava can be eaten. Thanks.

Dear Sir, I am 66 year old male and have diabetes for the last 30 years. I have recently developed piles problem. It was there previously also but it was not often. The diabetes doctor prescribed ANOVATE cream which I used to apply over the anus but did not use the applicator. Last week while passing urine I got burning sensation which did not subside after taking potrate M. Thereafter I realized it was due to piles. It is only internal and there is no external symptoms. Now I am normal. Kindly suggest some home remedy. I have stopped spicy foods. After defecation I get some irritation, it subsides slowly.

Pay close attention to your food choice. ·        Eat less carbohydrate food sources like chapatti, rice, noodles, pasta, bread etc as they help in gaining weight and storing fat. ·        While having lunch or dinner eat vegetables and dal to fill your stomach rather eating lots of chapattis or rice. ·        Have a healthy breakfast like poha, idli, upma, plain dosa, oats, dalia or khichdi with vegetables. ·        Eat a balance diet including good quality proteins like: fish, lean chicken and eggs. If you are a vegetarian then include skimmed milk, low fat paneer, butter milk, soy bean or soy milk in your diet. ·        Avoid ghee, butter or vanaspati. Prepare your diet with vegetable oil like sunflower, safflower soybean or olive oil. ·        Eat plenty of salads. ·        Eat fresh fruits including apple, orange, pineapple, papaya, sweet lime, berries, guava, watermelon, mask melon etc. ·        Avoid eating outside junk and fried foods like pizza, pasta, roll, burgers, cakes, chocolates and cookies. ·        Have an early dinner. The earlier the better, giving your system more time to digest the food. ·        Avoid cold drinks/alcohol as they add empty calories to your diet. ·        Avoid fat enriched milk products like cheese, sweets, full fat cream etc. ·        Drink 3 liters of water in a day. ·        Try to have less sugar in food and beverages. ·        Try to drink 2 cups of green tea in a day as green tea helps in weight loss by aiding digestion. ·        Avoid red meat like mutton, beef, lamb or pork. ·        Eat sprouts or roasted chana, whenever you feel hungry.

INFERTILITY

Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S)
Sexologist, Chennai
INFERTILITY
What Is Infertility?

Infertility is defined as not being able to become pregnant after a year of trying—or after six months, if you are 35 or older . And it’s not just a woman’s problem. One-third of infertility cases are due to male-only problems, one-third to female-only problems, and the final one-third to a mix of male and female problems or unknown problems

What Causes Infertility?

To become pregnant, many steps in the reproductive process have to be precisely aligned:

A woman’s ovary must release an egg (ovulation).
The egg must then travel through the fallopian tube toward the uterus, which is also called the womb.
A man’s sperm must be in the woman’s body during this specific time. It must also meet and join with (fertilize) the egg as it is traveling through the fallopian tubes.
The fertilized egg must then reach the uterus.
At the uterus, it must push its way inside and implant itself (implantation).

If there is a problem with any of these steps, infertility can occur.

Infertility in Women

Female infertility is most often caused by problems in ovulation—marked by irregular or absent periods. These problems may be related to hormonal disorders, such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), or primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), when a woman’s ovaries stop working before age 40.

Other causes include:

uterine fibroids, benign growths that can keep fertilized eggs from implanting properly in the uterine lining
scar tissue after surgery
early menopause
blocked or scarred fallopian tubes, due to infection or endometriosis

Endometriosis is an often painful condition in which the uterine tissue that is supposed to line the inside of your uterus begins to grow outside the uterus, causing it to become trapped as it has no place to go (uterine tissue inside the uterus is shed each month during the menstrual cycle). The surrounding body tissues become inflamed, and scar tissue may form—sometimes inside the fallopian tubes.

Infertility in Men

Problems with sperm production and delivery, low sperm count, and low motility (the ability of sperm to swim and fertilize the egg) can all affect male fertility.

Varicocele is a disorder where the veins servicing a man’s testicles have incompetent or leaky valves. The backflow of blood can enlarge the blood vessels and can raise the temperature of the testicles causing a low sperm count or abnormal sperm. Testicles are generally slightly below the core body temperature.

Lifestyle Factors

Other lifestyle choices can impair healthy egg and sperm production, including:

smoking
heavy alcohol use
drug use
being overweight or underweight
an excessive amount of exercise
stress
In men, environmental toxins, such as pesticides, and high temperatures (for example, in hot tubs) have also been shown to affect sperm count.

My husband has diabetes for the past 10 years. Can you please tell me how a typical diet of a diabetic person should ...
Hi. Your husband is carrying about 15 Kgs of extra weight on his body that will put pressure on all his internal organs. Extra weight also causes increase in Diabetes problem. Reduction in weight by even 5 Kgs can significantly reduce pressure on the organs. Next Issue is. Diabetes is not simply a 'Sugar' Problem. It is a problem of excess Carbohydrates. That includes excess of rice, roti, maida, sugar, sweets, juices, colas, potatoes etc Any excess carbohydrate/sugar stuff makes Diabetes worse. The solution is to have complex carbs like corn, multigrain atta, raagi, fibrous fruits like Apple, Papaya, Mausambi. You have to avoid over-sweet fruits like. Mango, banana, dates, chikoo etc. You have to completely cut down all Pure maida stuff like bhatura, samosa, white bread etc. Also he can take about 10-15 Almonds/cashew per day. Add some protiens in every meal like dals, matar, paneer, mushrooms, soya bean, eggs etc. He needs to do at least 60 minutes of active exercise everyday. Health is wealth. Take care of it now. Prevention is better than cure. If things don't improve visit a local dietician who can help him with a diet + exercise plan. Healthy living is the best investment with great results.
