Dear lybrate user. I can understand. You already know pan parag is very bad for health. You should motivate your father to quit it. There are no short cuts. Either he has to use his will power or you have to compel him to undergo deaddiction therapy. Take care.

Suffering from one eye blurness. Even headaches at times. Have undergone eye treatment and also have consulted a neur...
Hi lybrate-user, Below are a few easy steps to lessen the chances of needing corrective contacts or glasses in the future. Try these four simple and quick exercises to get your eyes in shape fast. 1. The 10-10-10 Rule - If you are someone that spends a lot of time in front of a computer screen, a TV, or reading books, the 10-10-10 Rule is for you. Focusing on objects in close proximity to our eyes causes blurry vision and may lead to long term damage to the ciliary muscles in our eyes. Every 10 minutes, focus on an object at least 10 feet away for a duration of 10 seconds. Doing this will give your eyes a “time-out” so they can recharge a little before going back to focusing on whatever it is you were doing. 2. Blinking - Blinking is a very basic exercise, but it is also a very effective one. We already blink unconsciously, but you should train yourself to blink very firmly and hold it for two seconds. Blinking rests the eye muscles and keeps them loose. It also circulates moisture around the eyes, keeping them lubricated, relaxed and refreshed. 3. Relax & Reset :This palming exercise will take about 10 minutes and is best done in a quiet space. While resting comfortably in a chair, place your elbows on your desk or table. Massage your hands together as if you were trying to generate heat, and then place both of your hands gently over your eyes for about 10 minutes. Use this time to allow your eyes to relax, while you breathe deeply and unwind. 4. Stop, Tone & Roll: Our mothers taught us that rolling our eyes was impolite. But in this instance, it can actually help with blurry vision! By rolling your eyes, first clockwise, then counter-clockwise, you are toning your eye muscles and circulating blood flow and oxygen around the eye. Start by slowly rolling in both directions, then accelerating the speed. Aim for 15-20 repetitions. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

FOODS THAT INCREASE SPERM COUNT

Diploma in Paediatrics, MBBS

FOODS THAT INCREASE SPERM COUNT
13 FOODS THAT INCREASE SPERM VOLUME
There are a lot of steps that you can take to improve your sperm volume, and diet is definitely one of the most important things that can help increase your sperm count as well as your semen volume. Here is a list of a few foods that can help you in this endeavor.
DARK CHOCOLATE
A powerful aphrodisiac, dark chocolate contains L-Arginine. This is an amino acid which is known to increase semen volume as well as improve the intensity of your orgasms. Just don’t overdo it or else you will end up gaining weight which will only reduce levels of testosterone in your body and your sperm count.
OYSTERS
Image By Pachango (Own work): Oysters rockefeller
Zinc is an essential mineral that plays an important role in improving testosterone levels as well as sperm production. Oysters are rich sources of this mineral. An increase in testosterone levels also helps improve your sexual desire and energy, which means that you are going to derive more pleasure from your sexual encounters besides having higher chances of conceiving.
EGGS
High in protein and vitamin E, eggs are considered to help in the production of healthy and strong sperm in the testicles. They are also believed to prevent sperm cells from the harmful effects of free radicals, which may kill sperm.
BANANAS
Bananas contain an enzyme called bromelain which is supposed to increase male libido. They are also rich sources of vitamin B, which can help bring an increase in stamina, making sure that you have more energy available for your sexual encounters.
SPINACH
Image By National Cancer Institute: Spinach
Leafy green vegetables such as spinach are rich sources of folic acid. Low levels of folate can give rise to distorted sperm shapes such as ones with two heads or two tails. The sperm are also at an increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities. This means that firstly your sperm will find it difficult to reach an egg and even if it does reach an egg, it will not be able to fertilize it. Furthermore, even if these sperms are able to fertilize an egg, the chances of birth defects are quite high in such cases.
ASPARAGUS
Asparagus
A green vegetable that is high in vitamin C, asparagus is also a good food to increase sperm volume. Vitamin C protects the sperm cells from the damaging effects of free radicals and thus ensures that the sperm store in the male reproductive system does not get depleted.
GARLIC
Garlic is a very effective food that has been used for centuries in treating various physical ailments including heart problems and respiratory infections. What most people don’t know is that it is also a potent aphrodisiac and very effective in boosting sperm volume. It contains a compound called allicin which improves blood flow to the male sexual organs, increasing sperm production and semen volume.
CARROTS
Image By Kander (Own work): Carrots
Vitamin A is an important nutrient for increasing sperm production as well as improving their motility. Carrots are rich in this nutrient. You can also consume vitamin A by eating foods such as oatmeal, red bell peppers and dried apricots.
GOJI BERRIES
Image By daveeza from okanagan, canada: Mongolian goji berries
These berries are known to improve your overall stamina and mood. But that’s not all, they also keep temperatures in the scrotum at the optimum level. The scrotum contains the testes which produce sperm. Higher temperatures tend to hamper the sperm production and decrease the volume that is released in a man’s ejaculate. They also promote sperm production by improving blood circulation and protecting against free radical damage.
WALNUTS
Image By Tech. Sgt. Michael B. Keller: Walnuts
Another key nutrient for sperm volume is omega-3 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids are supposed to increase sperm count as well as improve blood flow to the penis.
PUMPKIN SEEDS
Image By Mk2010 (Own work): Pumpkin seeds
Pumpkin seeds contain phytosterols which are known to improve testosterone production and reduce the size of an enlarged production. Both these factors help in increasing sperm count as well as semen volume. They also contain essential fatty acids that improve blood flow to the male reproductive organs.
GINSENG
Image By Ginsenosideforbrain (Own work): Ginseng
Ginseng is a powerful herb known for its powerful effects on improving virility in men. It increases sex drive and also enhances your sexual performance. It has been found to be quite effective in men with erectile dysfunctions, increasing semen volume and sperm production.
MACA
This one is another herb that is known to increase semen volume. It has been found that men who consume this herb in the form of a supplement can expect higher sperm count per milliliter of semen, higher semen volume per ejaculation and also better sperm motility. It is also known to have a positive effect on the sex drive and arousal of both men and women.
This list of foods is definitely not a comprehensive one. Eating a balanced diet (or taking a purpose-made supplement) which is rich in minerals such as zinc and vitamins such as A, B12, C, and folic acid will ensure that more sperms are produced in your testes and they are healthy enough to fertilize an egg.

Psoriasis - How it Effects Your Skin?

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Dermatologist, Delhi
Psoriasis - How it Effects Your Skin?

An often persistent and long-lasting condition, psoriasis interferes with the life cycle of skin cells and causes them to increase rapidly on the surface of the skin. These generally appear as dry, itchy and red patches of skin having thick, silvery scales.

Psoriasis can be subdivided into the following:

  1. Plaque psoriasis: The most common form, characterized by dry, red skin lesions covered with silvery scales and can be seen anywhere on the body.
  2. Scalp psoriasis: These appear on the scalp and may extend beyond the hairline.
  3. Nail psoriasis: These affect the toenails and fingernails.
  4. Guttate psoriasis: Characterized by blister-like appearances and are stimulated by bacterial infections.
  5. Inverse psoriasis: Caused by fungal infections.
  6. Erythrodermic psoriasis: Can cover the entire body with a reddish rash that may peel.
  7. Pustular psoriasis: Capable of causing chills, fever and diarrhea.

The usual signs and symptoms of psoriasis include:

  • Red, sensitive patches of skin
  • A silvery, scaly cover
  • Dry and cracked skin that may bleed when scratched or agitated
  • Tiny scaling spots (witnessed in children)
  • Persistent itching, soreness or burning sensation
  • Ridged, thickened or pitted nails
  • Stiff and swollen joints

Possible causes of psoriasis may include:

  1. Skin infections or strep throat infections
  2. Stress
  3. Skin injuries, like cuts, bites or sunburns
  4. Smoking
  5. Cold weather
  6. Chronic alcoholism
  7. Certain medications such as high blood pressure medications

Risk factors

The following factors may further increase the risk of developing the disease:

  1. Fungal and bacterial infections
  2. Family history
  3. Obesity
  4. Stress
  5. Smoking

Ayurveda and Psoriasis

Although the root cause of the disease is yet to be identified, according to traditional Ayurveda, the vitiation of Vata and Kapha causes psoriasis. As per ayurvedic principles, Vata and Kapha are the two basic energies that uphold the balance of our body equilibrium. Strong genetic predisposition, sun deprivation, and intense streptococcal infection on the upper respiratory tract can badly aggravate psoriasis. As per ayurveda, these conditions are strong enough to create several visible pathological changes that take place are mainly due to the accumulation of dooshi vishas or low potency poisons.

Uneven and unhealthy food habits, consumption of foodstuffs in the wrong combination (Example: dairy products with fish or chicken), too much intake of yogurt, black gram, seafood, sour or salted food stuffs, etc. can trigger the psoriasis inducing pathogenesis. Other catalysts that cause psoriasis includes stress, alcohol, and tobacco consumption

Psoriasis can be effectively treated through panchakarma therapies, which include ayurvedic treatment methods for the complete detoxification of the body, and successful elimination of harmful toxins from the body fluids.

A few health tips for psoriasis patients:

  1. Maintain safer distance from the possible variables that cause or aggravate psoriasis
  2. Practice yoga regularly. Yoga can lessen the intensity of psoriasis.
  3. Avoid pricking, peeling or scratching your skin.
  4. Make sure to pat your skin dry after washing, and avoid rubbing vigorously with towel or any rough cloth.
  5. Avoid artificial cleansers and use gram flour (besan flour) instead.
  6. Use cotton clothes
  7. Avoid cold water bath or immediate cleaning up right after heavy work-out, long walks, or travel.
  8. Avoid food stuffs that can cause indigestion.
  9. Avoid excessive salty and acidic food stuffs, radish, urad dal, sesame, jaggery (gur), curds, fish and other sour food stuffs that can trigger psoriasis.

I am 20year old female. I am having late periods. Can you figure out some possible reasons?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology

I am 20year old female. I am having late periods. Can you figure out some possible reasons?
Menses can be missed either because of hormonal changes or even stress or illness or even if you have put on some weight in recent times then also menses can be missed. All these problems are temporary and menses will come on its own. You can wait for another 15 days before you can take tablet deviry to get menses. If this is happening again and again then there is a possibility of pcod which can be diagnosed with ultrasound and fsh, lh tests. I hope there is no issue of pregnancy here.

Tips for healthy skin and hair in Winter

MD - Dermatology , Venereology & Leprosy, MBBS
Dermatologist, Ahmedabad
Tips for healthy skin and hair in Winter
Winter – the onset of weddings, festivities, vacation and parties. Time to rev up, let your hair down, sing, dance and enjoy the best of times with your friends and family. It’s but natural that you ought to look your gorgeous self at each and every occasion. But winter does make this difficult. Dry skin and hair can rob you of your natural glow. With these basic tips, it is possible to look your best this winter:

1. Keep it lukewarm
Winter is the time when your skin and hair need maximum attention. Though the idea of piping hot water is very tempting, stick to a lukewarm water bath every day. Make sure to use a mild non-drying soap or a moisturizing soap.

2. Exfoliate

During winters, the varying temperature outdoors and indoors can have a major effect on the skin. While taking a shower, get into the habit of exfoliating with a loofah so as to remove layers of dead skin and make way for new healthy skin cells.

3. Make moisturizer your daily companion
Needless to say, choose a really good moisturizer to keep the skin moisturized and soft. Pay special attention to the exposed parts (and the most affected areas) like your hands, nails, feet and lips. Keep them well moisturized at all times. Use a lip balm to keep your lips soft and supple.

4. Sunscreen is not just for summers
Wear a sunscreen when you step out in the open. In fact, it should be a part of your daily routine throughout the year and especially during the winters. This is the time when it may seem that you don’t need protection from the sun but you really do!

5. Avoid excess use of deodorants
As you hardly tend to sweat during winter, it’s best to restrict the usage of deodorants which contain high alcohol content. These products tend to strip away the skin’s moisture leaving your skin dry. Go for alcohol-free products instead.

6. Conditioner is a must
Since you don’t sweat much in winter, don’t shampoo too often as it may dry out the scalp and hair. Use a mild shampoo and lukewarm water as very hot water can be harmful to your hair and scalp. And don’t forget the conditioner. If you want to go natural, coconut milk is an excellent conditioner.

7. Oil your hair regularly
However busy your schedule is, don’t skip the oil your hair needs. It will help regulate the blood circulation and keep your scalp moisturized.

8. Style wisely
Say no to hair dryers/ flat irons/ curl irons. These hair styling instruments work on the principle of heat, which when used during winters make matters worse. Instead use the cool setting of the dryer which though may take longer to dry but it would retain the moisture. Choose wooden hair brushes or combs instead of plastic. This is to fight the static hair caused by absence of moisture. If it fits in your schedule and budget, visit a good salon for protein treatment.

9. Cover with care
While woolen caps, scarves and stoles may make a style statement, it can also be the cause of hair breakage especially at the nape of your neck or forehead. Don’t try to be over-protective by wearing them tightly around your head. Leave sufficient space for air circulation in the scalp.
