Why Should You Get Your Child Vaccinated Against Influenza?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
Pediatrician, Chandrapur
Why Should You Get Your Child Vaccinated Against Influenza?

Influenza is more commonly known as the flu. It is an infection that affects the respiratory system and is caused by the influenza virus. This injection is recommended for kids who are under the age of 6 months. It ensures that the baby is safeguarded from the virus during an influenza outbreak. Since the nature of virus changes year on year, the immunity doesn’t last for more than 1 year. This vaccination is ideally taken during the month of October and November. The effect of the vaccination typically lasts for 6-8 months.

Ideally, kids who have never had a flu vaccination should take 2 vaccinations within 4 weeks. Kids who have received a shot of flu should undertake this vaccination once in a year. This arrangement is ideal up to 9 years of age. Flu shot is extremely important for a kid due to the following reasons:

  • It saves a kid from chronic lung and heart disorders such as asthma and cystic fibrosis
  • Kids suffering from immune deficiency, cancer, and HIV should take this vaccination to avoid further complication of the existing disease
  • Kids suffering from diabetes, kidney diseases, and metabolic disorders should go for this vaccination without a second thought
  • Kids suffering from a neurological disorder, haemoglobin deficiency, and anaemia should take this vaccination to refrain from the risk of aggravation of the present disease
  • Pregnant women should ideally take it for the safeguarding the fetus

Flu shot should not be taken be taken if:
1. A baby is under the age of 6 months.
2. The baby has thimerosal allergy.

Is flu shot safe?
The flu shot is considered to be very safe. It does not result in flu. Few side effects include:
a. Soreness of the place where the needle is injected. This doesn’t last for more than a couple of day.
b. Body ache and mild fever for the first couple of days after the vaccination is done.
c. There is little to no pain in the place where the injection is injected by the doctor.

What is nasal flu vaccine?
This is an influenza dose that is not injected into the body, but given in the form of nasal spray. Healthy kids above the age of 2 years are fit to get this injection. For those kids who have a history of chronic illness should check with their doctor to go ahead with nasal spray. Each dose is given in each nostril. Like the influenza vaccine, nasal flu vaccine should be undertaken once for those who have already taken this dose once. Kids who have not undergone this vaccination are eligible for 2 dosages each 4 weeks apart from each other.

I am getting repeated bouts of acidity with which I am having a lot of problems in concentration on studies especially in the starting of the week. Is it due to tension because I am a bit tensed student sometimes.

I am getting repeated bouts of acidity with which I am having a lot of problems in concentration on studies especiall...
Phsycological problems may cause acidity. But the major part will be upon the dietary habits. So give more value to the diet you take Nd the timing of your food intake shud be regular. Decrease spicy items. Continue this for a week. Even if it doesn't come down start off with off the counter drugs like ranitidine or omeprazole bfor food twice a day. If your problem doesn't get solved then go to a doctor Nd get urself a endoscopy done to rule out any ulcer or other mucosal problems. Farewell.

Often I got irritated on small things. I too become angry very quickly. M I in depression?

Often I got irritated on small things. I too become angry very quickly. M I in depression?
Some of the" typical" responses to frustration include anger, quitting (burn out or giving up), loss of self-esteem and self-confidence, stress and depression. Anger management: 10 tips to tame your temper anger: there is a saying" frustration begets anger and anger begets aggression. Direct anger, is expressed toward the object perceived as the cause of the frustration. If a machine does not work, you might hit it or kick it. If someone gets in your way, you could verbally threaten them or push them aside. If the source of the frustration is too powerful or threatening for direct aggression, displaced aggression is often used. The aggression is redirected toward a less threatening and more available object. An angry person often acts without thinking. The person has given in to the frustration and they have given up restraint. Anger can be a healthy response if it motivates us to positive action but all too often the actions we engage in when angry are destructive. Indeed, if we could see a videotape of ourselves getting angry, the humiliation might well help cure us of anger. When you feel frustration building, you have to practice learned responses that lead to healthy actions instead of destructive ones. Giving up: giving up on a goal can be productive if the goal is truly out of reach. However, more often giving up (quitting or being apathetic) is another form of giving in to frustration. When repeatedly frustrated, people can drop out of school, quit jobs, or move away. Apathy is giving up all of your goals, so you cannot be frustrated by trying to reach them. We live in difficult time and we have to be persistent in order to accomplish. Consider how many projects you began, and then gave up, because you became frustrated and lost patience. Make a list of things you started and quit because they seemed too difficult. Now calculate the disappointment and loss you suffered by not dealing with the frustration in a more healthy way. Try to remember that quitters never win, and winners never quit. Losing your temper means you're a quitter. Loss of confidence: is a terrible frequent side effect of giving up and not fulfilling your goal. A loss of self-confidence and self-esteem, means that if we quit once, then the next time we plan a goal, we may not be able to accurately assess our ability to carry it out and we stop trusting ourselves and our own abilities. This became a self-fulfilling and self-destructive attitude. You need to be able to learn that when the going gets tough, you say to yourself" it is worth it! and by following through, it not only gets the job done, but it builds self-confidence. Stress: is the" wear and tear" our body and mind experiences as we adjust to the frustrations our continually changing environment. Too frequently, extreme, or prolonged frustration and stress strains us and generates distress signals. Our body experiences distress signals in a variety of ways, often in the form of: irritability, anger, fatigue anxiety, headache, depression, stomach aches, hypertension, migraines, ulcers, heart attacks, or colitis. Depression: depression can affect almost every aspect of your life. It affects people of all ages, income, race, and cultures. Depression can affect the way you eat and sleep the way you feel about yourself, the way one think about things, and the way you interact with others. While we all feel depression at various appropriate times in our lives, excess or inappropriate depression cannot be easily dismissed or wished away. Other reactions: abuse of drugs & alcohol is self-destructive and usually futile attempt at dealing with frustration, as are many eating and weight problems and addictions whenever the immediate effects of the addictive behaviour wear off, users find themselves back in the same, or even worse, frustrating situation. Learning to deal with frustration.

I am a teacher. My weight is grown upto 80 kg from 65 kg. How can I loss my weight.
Hi lybrate-user, Follow these guidelines: 1. Be physically active for about 45-60 mins/day. Take the stairs instead of lift when you have an option. 2. Eat smaller meals at frequent intervals. Do not skip meals to lose weight as it would slow down the metabolism rate and the body would be slow to burn the calories when you consume food next time 3. Drink at least 3-4 liters of water throughout the day which would help in efficient metabolism of stored fat and also helps to flush out the toxins from the body. 4. Drink green tea as it contains metabolism enhancing antioxidants and avoid sugary foods and drinks. 5. Consuming fruits, veggies and carbs that contain more fiber is always a good idea to promote satiety. 6. Include good amounts of proteins in the diet. Opt for lean meats rather than organ meats. If your a vegetarian include soy products and low fat dairy products. 7. Avoid preservatives and processed foods, junk and fatty foods. Limit the intake of salt. These steps would help you in losing your excess weight.
