You have taken a right decision in going for follicular study but it's better if you will. Be given some medicines to grow follicles as generally in pcos the natural and timely growth doesn't happen. They get pregnant but need assistance of medicines.

Heart disease begins in youth

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Heart disease begins in youth
Autopsy studies of young people who died in accidents have shown that by the late teens, heart blockages, the kind of lesions that cause heart attacks and strokes are in the process of developing.

The best opportunity to prevent heart disease is to focus on children and adolescents and start the preventive process early. More than a third of children and adolescents are overweight or obese.

The first signs that men are at higher risk of heart disease than women appear during the adolescent years despite the fact that boys lose fat and gain muscle in adolescence, while girls add body fat.

Between the ages of 11 and 19, levels of triglycerides, a type of blood fat associated with cardiovascular disease, increases in the boys and drops in the girls. Levels of hdl cholesterol, the" good" kind that helps keep arteries clear, go down in boys but rise in girls. Blood pressure increases in both, but significantly more in boys. Insulin resistance, a marker of cardiovascular risk, which is lower in boys at age 11, rises until the age of 19 years.

Any protection that the young women have for cardiovascular protection can be wiped out by obesity and hence obesity in girls should be handled on priority.

Dear Doctor, My mother is 76 years old. She is usually very agile, workaholic from the time I had seen her. She takes care of cooking & other household work till now. Her daily routine is: Gets up at 4.30 am in the morning, goes out for walking by 5.00 am. Walks between 30 - 40 minutes. Comes back - does meditation for 20 min; then does Yoga for 30 minutes. By the time she finishes all this it will be around 6.30 am. Then she goes to Kitchen and does breakfast and lunch for my wife and children - as they get ready to go to their work. Goes back to bed around 11.00 pm. Till she retires to bed, she is almost doing some work in the house. Maybe takes 1 hr rest in the noon time. Coming to her health issue: She has been diagnosed for diabetes for the past 4 years and is taking Glycomet GP1 - one tab in the morning and one at night; Her sugar reading taken a couple of days back reads: Fasting: 189 and PP 196. Her food habits: Breakfast: 3 idli or 2 chapattis or 2 doses. Lunch: Rice with some dal and vegetables and 1 green; Dinner: 2 chapattis; Upuma or Kichadi. Eats a piece of apple and guava and some dry fruits and nuts. Has one glass of milk before going to bed. For the past 6 months she is finding it difficult to walk outside, as her legs are paining. Pain radiates from bottom part of hip till the heels of her both legs. Usually she walks faster than men. Now she is feels her legs are heavy and knees paining as she walks. End of her walk back home, she is sweating and panting for breath; Her question is: She does everything that is recommended and advised by Doctors. Still why would she be having such a problem at her age? What investigations are to be done? Which specialist doctor has she to check about her health issue? Would appreciate your thoughts and advise to my dear mother.

7 Things that Can Cause Hives

DDVL, MBBS
Dermatologist, Bangalore
7 Things that Can Cause Hives

Hives or urticaria is an outbreak of reddish swollen bumps around the skin surface, formed mainly due to the body’s response to particular allergens. Generally, the infectious bumps are of varied shapes and sizes and last for about 5-6 weeks. Although not a serious medical condition, hives can cause tremendous discomfort to the concerned person and affect his/her daily activities. Hives can be cured with a prescribed dosage of antihistamines or oral corticosteroids.

Causes of hives

Although the exact reason behind their formation is still unknown, researchers suggest that this disorder occurs as a response to involuntary histamine release by the skin blood vessels (that in turn, causes a leakage of blood plasma). Some other factors that can be responsible are:

  1. Hives can occur due to insect or parasite bites.
  2. Hives can also result as a side effect of painkillers such as codeine and other anti- inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or ACE inhibitors.
  3. Excessive exposure to sunlight or high levels of stress (leading to high cortisol levels in the body) can also result in hives.
  4. Intense scratching around the same spot can also result to hive formation.
  5. Excessive alcohol intake can render you even more vulnerable to this disease.
  6. Excessive intake of foods such as eggs, fish, nuts, chocolate and berries might also cause hives. Additionally, excessive consumption of certain food preservatives can also trigger the release of histamine.
  7. Suffering from serious underlying medical conditions such as cancer, hepatitis or thyroid disorders can make you prone to chronic cases of hives (which might last for more than 6 weeks).

Symptoms of hives
The symptoms of hives include, but are not limited to:

  1. Appearances of several reddish welts around the face or arms which might cause a severe itchy sensation.
  2. Painful and abnormal swelling around the mouth
  3. You might also feel tightness in your chest along with recurring bouts of dizziness.

If not treated promptly after diagnosis, hives might result in life-threatening allergic reactions, such as Anaphylaxis (narrowing down of the bronchial tubes, thus causing significant breathing trouble) and auto-immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

Duration is life long, the dosage and drugs can be increased or decreased depending upon your progress over time. Usually medications are decreased after 6 months to 1 year. Live a Healthy Lifestyle Eat a healthy diet. Choosing healthful meal and snack options can help you avoid heart disease and its complications. Be sure to eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Eating foods low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in fiber can help prevent high blood cholesterol. Limiting salt or sodium in your diet can also lower your blood pressure. Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obese can increase your risk for heart disease. To determine whether your weight is in a healthy range, doctors often calculate a number called the body mass index (BMI).  Exercise regularly. Physical activity can help you maintain a healthy weight and lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Don't smoke. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease. So, if you don't smoke, don't start. If you do smoke, quitting will lower your risk for heart disease. Your doctor can suggest ways to help you quit. Limit alcohol use. Avoid drinking too much alcohol, which causes high blood pressure.  If you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes, there are steps you can take to lower your risk for heart disease. Have your cholesterol checked. Your health care provider should test your cholesterol levels at least once every five years. Talk with your doctor about this simple blood test. Monitor your blood pressure. High blood pressure has no symptoms, so be sure to have it checked on a regular basis. Manage your diabetes. If you have diabetes, closely monitor your blood sugar levels. Talk with your health care provider about treatment options. Take your medicine. If you're taking medication to treat high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes, follow your doctor's instructions carefully. Always ask questions if you don't understand something.
