Hi Doctor, My daughter is 22 months old. I have a question over her diet. As summers are at peak, my baby is not eating or drinking any thing, she only takes Lactogen- Stage 4, which is a cause of worry for me. She is becoming very weak now a days. As she is not eating properly, she is getting irritated and crying all the time. I request your help to get a solution for her healthy diet during summers. Thank You!

Fellowship In Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology And Nutrition, MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Mumbai
Milk based diet till 22 months is really not good. If you r bottle feeding stop it immediately. Give her regular diet as we eat but with lesser spices. U can give regular cows milk only twice a day in a glass. Bottle is habit forming and has many disadvantages. Particularly in summers give more water. Fluids. Juice. Along with balanced diet.

Your baby' s weight is absolutely normal. Don' t give anything except breastfeeding till completion of six months. Never give farex or cerelac. Give homemade food after completion of 6 mths.

I hope you are referring to masturbation, though masturbation is not harmful but anything in excess will have its harmful effects, hence avoid ejaculation at this age.

Dear Sir, Greetings of the day. My son who is 5 years is given Cypon syrup. His intake has increased. Earlier we used to give him Neopeptine since last 4 -5 years. Now after someone suggested we give him Cypon syrup along with neopeptine. My question is whether it is safe to continue and is there any side effect in longterm how much time we should continue this. Is it ayurvedic/Allopathic? Kindly guide me. Thanks,

Pediatrician, Ahmedabad
These meds do cause habit forming events. Prefer calorie dense diet rather then just making hunger stimulated.

My 2 years old son looks very lean and short. Please suggest me foods which will increase his height and weight doctor.

It had been better if you mention weight and height. some children look lean. If his wt is about 12 kg and ht about 85 cm. you need not worry. Give him home made nutritious diet. Add supplement Vitamin D.

Breast milk is best for the baby. Please consider if the milk is not enough or if it is just perceived to be not enough. A baby getting enough milk will sleep from 2-4 hours between feeds, generally passes 5-6 motions if under 2 months and 5-6 times urine per day. You can also get baby weighed to see if growth is adequate. If milk is not truly enough, you can use any of the popular brands of formula like nan pro, similac, enfamil etc.

Doctor, My son is 1 year 8 months old. He has not vaccinated with IPV due to unavailability of the same. He has taken 6 doses of OPV. Can he be vaccinated with IPV now? Kindly let me know the procedure. Regards

The baby is safe after OPV too. IVP is a recent trend and the vaccine is running in shortage. In some government setuo it may be available. Don't worry if it is not given.

Mera baby 6 and half months ka ho gaya h to please mujhe batayein 6 and half baby ka ideal weight kya hona chahiye. Mera baby 9 kg ka h.

General Physician, Mumbai
Just remember to make a note of milestone for the baby and also take notes of the physical activity and weight also depends on the previous record on his birth day and if there are restricted activities than we have to think about the cause of weight gain.

My 5 year daughter has asthma. What is the effect of using an asthma preventer long time? I heard that using for the year might cause bone shrinkage. Is it true?

DHMS (Diploma in Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery)
Homeopath, Ludhiana
High doses of inhaled steroids taken long-term, however, may decrease bone density, which increases the chance of bone fractures. People older than age 50 should have regular bone density scans and take calcium and vitamin D supplements. But a your daughter is just 5 so you can go for such medicines if you likes so.Myself being a homoeopath will suggest you to go for homoeopathic treatment.a homoeo meddicines dont have any side effects.

MBBS, Diploma in Child Health (DCH)

It depends on the ailment condition and improvement. There is no hard and fast rule, usually a course of 3-5 days is sufficient, in certain conditions like tb and leprosy we give for about a year.

1) my baby sleeps fast while drinking milk, she is one month old, m not sure if I have enough milk or if she is tried sucking and than sleeps. I am giving her lactogen as top up 2) also I wanted to know if lactogen is good as top up or mum mum.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Babies do sleep more during the day. They are not able to distinguish the difference between day and night. Monitoring regularly the growth and development by assessing weight and head circumference it can be decided if the baby gets enough nutrition, it is not ideal to give anything except breastmilk in first 4-6 months. Ask privately for regular advice on child rearing.

My daughter is 2 years 4 months old. She has stopped feeding during day. However i'm not able to wean off her during night. She sleeps with feeding and wakes up 2-3 times in night. She is eating food properly. Please help me regarding this.

I would suggest that you continue feeding her at night and whenever she wants. She would stop feeding on your breast on her own as she grows up. Breastfeeding at night is very reassuring to babies that their mother is closeby and that they have her complete attention.

Ways to Reduce Teeth Sensitivity

Dentist, Ghaziabad
Ways to Reduce Teeth Sensitivity

The tooth is made of 3 layers, each with unique characteristics and specific function, the enamel, dentin, and pulp. The enamel is the outermost layer of the tooth and gives the tooth it's hard and lustrous appearance. The enamel is thicker on the crown than the root and is the first one to be affected by tooth decay. The only symptom when the enamel is decayed is food lodgment and discoloration.

The dentin is the next layer, which is composed of minute fine tubules leading from the enamel to the living portion of the tooth, which is the pulp. Once decay progresses from the enamel, the dentin is affected, and this leads to sensitivity in the teeth. When the root portion is exposed to the oral environment, because the root is covered by a more delicate substance called cementum, more severe dental sensitivity ensues.

There is a sharp, shooting discomfort through the tooth to specific foods, such as sweet, acidic, or hot or cold foods.  The main reasons for tooth sensitivity include:

  • Tooth decay, both crown and root caries
  • Periodontal disease and gum recession
  • Tooth erosion
  • Aggressive tooth brushing
  • Mouth breathing
  • Bruxism or night grinding

However, there are some simple ways to manage sensitivity, which can be done regularly at home.

  1. Toothpaste made for sensitive teeth: Potassium nitrate has been shown to block the tubules and has been included as an active ingredient in toothpastes. These are very effective, and if you are brushing twice, this can be used instead of the regular paste once.
  2. Brushing: Both the type of toothbrush and the brushing technique can have an impact on sensitivity.  Change to softer brushes and learn the ideal way to brush your teeth. A lot of times, rough brushing can lead to erosion and subsequent sensitivity
  3. Rinsing: Fluoride containing rinses have been proven to reduce sensitivity
  4. Food habits: Even before sensitivity sets in, being cautious to avoid acidic fruits and juices can help prolong the onset of sensitivity. If possible, consuming these food stuffs should be followed by brushing or at the least a thorough rinsing
  5. Sealants: If a person is prone to caries (deep pits and fissures, for instance), then it is advisable to get sealants applied on the teeth. This can reduce the instance of wearing of the enamel which then leads to sensitivity
  6. Mouth guard: If you are a night grinder, then a mouth guard can help curtail this habit and thereby reduce sensitivity.

There you go with how to reduce sensitivity. Try these simple, easy measures and go on to enjoy the sweets or hot or cold foods that you have always craved for.

My daughter is seven and half months old (premature). Her weight is 5.8kgs. She blows away medicine as well solids, does not take enough formula. Does not sleep properly. Please help.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Please check her blood re and tft and send me the reports. Throwing away medicines is common among children as they do not like the taste or dislike being forced upon. You remain in touch with me as you need regular advice as a personal doctor for advice in your preterm baby care. Send reports as I said.
