Hi, First of all, do an urine examination for confirmation of pregnancy. If it is positive, then avoid papaya and gingelly seeds. Except these these two, you can consume anything you like in small quantities frequently.

Cholesterol - It Is Not Always Bad For You!

MBBS, MRCGP ( UK), Diploma in Diabetes (UK), DFSRH (UK), DRCOG (UK), CCT (UK)
Endocrinologist, Hyderabad
Cholesterol - It Is Not Always Bad For You!

Over the last few decades, the word cholesterol has assumed a different connotation. It has come to be known as a silent killer that spells doom for health. However, what we need to realize is that a certain amount of cholesterol is essential for the proper functioning of the body. The liver produces about 85% of the cholesterol that is required by the body normally. The ever changing food habits have introduced a lot of processed foods that are loaded with saturated fats. Along with this, reduced physical activity has led to accumulation of cholesterol in the blood.

The types of cholesterol are based on the density and we have 2 types of density that is Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and High Density Lipoprotein (HDL). LDL is more dangerous than HDL, called as bad and good cholesterol respectively. In addition, the triglycerides and lipoprotein are also critical indicators of overall cholesterol levels. Depending on a person's age, height and weight, normal levels are derived for each of these four.

Because of their density of the cholesterol molecules, as they are circulating in the blood stream, they tend to get sluggish and settle down along the walls of the blood vessels, referred to as plaque. This plaque attracts more and more cholesterol from the blood and the layer gets gradually thicker. This reduces the thickness of the blood vessels and in severe cases even completely blocks blood flow to important organs like the brain and heart, leading to severe conditions like stroke and heart attack respectively.

However, it is not always that all cholesterol is bad. It is one of the essential things for the proper body functions with the main functions listed below:

  1. Each cell in the body requires it to form the cell membrane, the protective layer around the cells
  2. Synthesis of vitamin D is done with the help of cholesterol, which is very essential for skin health
  3. It also helps in hormone formation. In addition to steroids, other hormones like testosterone, estrogen, cortisol require cholesterol as a main ingredient
  4. Formation of neurotransmitters and overall nerve function requires cholesterol. This ensures optimal neurological functioning.

So, as noted above, there are, both good and bad aspects to cholesterol. It is not all that dangerous a thing that it is made out to be. The trick is to maintain a good level of cholesterol so that the body's requirements are met, and at the same time, the harmful effects are kept at bay. Some important parameters to manage, include the percentage of bad cholesterol in the blood and the ratio of triglycerides to HDL in the blood. These are considered fair indicators of heart health and if need be, lifestyle changes and/or medications can be undertaken to manage overall health and reduce risk of heart disease and stroke.

Candida (yeast) is a simple fungal infection, which gives foul smell and rashes. If immunity is fine, body takes care of it. You may not have acquired the same unless you are immunocompromised, in which case you might have white patches or ulcers in oral cavity. Till the infection in her clears, avoid oral. All the best

Bacterial Vaginosis - 4 Common Causes Behind It

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Chennai
Bacterial Vaginosis - 4 Common Causes Behind It

Bacterial vaginosis is an infection that occurs in the vagina due to an imbalance in growth of the vaginal bacteria; It is the overgrowth in the naturally occurring bacteria in the vagina causes the imbalance. This disorder is very common among women, especially among pregnant women. This problem is usually not very serious and tends to subside within 4-5 days. However, in certain cases, they are capable of causing serious complications.

Symptoms of bacterial vaginosis include:

  1. Vaginal discharge that is white or grey in colour
  2. Constant itching in your vagina
  3. The vaginal discharge usually has a foul smelling odour
  4. Burning sensation during urination

Causes
Vaginal bacteria can be either good or bad. Any disruption in the delicate balance of the vaginal bacteria can lead to bacterial vaginosis. There is no exact known cause of this disorder, but it is believed that having multiple sex partners can aggravate this risks. Other factors include:

  1. Douching: If you clean your vagina with water and other cleansing agents on a regular basis, it might cause a bacterial imbalance, thus leading to this infection.
  2. Multiple partners: Having multiple sex partners puts you at a higher risk of contracting bacterial vaginosis. This disorder may also lead to various complications such as:
    • STIs: This infection may make you highly susceptible to various infections such as Chlamydia, HIV and gonorrhoea.
    • Disorders of the pelvic region: Bacterial vaginosis may lead to inflammation in the pelvic region, which in turn may lead to infertility.
    • Preterm birth: It increases the chances of premature birth
  3. Smoking: Smoking frequently increases the risk of a bacterial vaginosis infection.
  4. Unprotected sex: Having sex without proper protection increases the risk levels of bacterial vaginosis.

There are certain preventive measures that you can adopt to prevent this condition:

  1. Use soaps which contain no or very little chemicals to clean the region around your genitals
  2. Use latex condoms during sexual intercourse to prevent STIs.
  3. Do not clean your vagina (the practice referred to as douching) on a regular basis. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding - How Hysteroscopic Treatment Can Help?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology, MBBS

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding - How Hysteroscopic Treatment Can Help?

Abnormal uterine bleeding, also known as AUB, is one of the most common causes requiring gynecologic evaluation. Hysteroscopy is a procedure wherein a thin camera called hysteroscope is introduced into the uterus via the vagina and this light helps in a thorough examination of the uterus. In cases where there are cysts or fibroids or even cancerous growths, this is used to get more details on the lesions. However, hysteroscopy also has a therapeutic use in that it is used to treat conditions like abnormal uterine bleeding. Read on to know more about AUB and how hysteroscopy helps in treatment.

Causes of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding: Vaginal bleeding that occurs more often than 21 days and farther apart than 35 days is known as abnormal uterine bleeding. The bleeding is also abnormal if it lasts longer than 7 days and more than 80 mL of blood is lost during each cycle.

Some causes include:

  1. Hormonal imbalance
  2. Cancer
  3. Uterine polyps
  4. Uterine fibroids
  5. Cervical infections

Diagnosis/Treatment:

When a woman has abnormal bleeding, further diagnosis is required to confirm the exact cause of the bleeding. This is where the hysteroscopy comes into the picture. Hysteroscopy, literally translates to viewing the uterus from inside directly through a camera.

How it is done:

Hysteroscopy is done as an outpatient procedure and normally takes about 3 to 4 hours. General or spinal anesthesia may be used depending on complexity and overall patient health. The uterus is filled with a fluid like saline or glycerin and a thin lighted instrument called the hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina, up the cervix, and into the uterus. This tube is flexible and so can be moved across the uterus to identify any areas of abnormality. It also has a camera and so can be used to take pictures of suspicious areas.

Causes for infertility may also be detected using hysteroscopy. Small knives can also be used to remove the lesion like fibroid or polyp. These are often the cause of abnormal bleeding. Samples can also be taken for biopsy to confirm if any cancerous growth is detected.

Hysteroscopy is a safe and effective way to examine the cervical canal and uterine cavity. It is better to accompany D&C with hysteroscopy instead of going for blind dilatation and curettage, especially in women who are peri or premenopausal. Hysteroscopy is a safe procedure if done by a doctor, specialised in gynecological endoscopy and helps in both diagnosis and treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.

Hi lybrate-user Try to lose weight naturally. Exercise regularly and eat a balanced diet. Avoid weight loss supplements. Ten Ways to Improve Your Diet 1. Eat 2 fruits every day. 2. Add fibre to your diet. For example oats, Rajma 3. Increase your vegetable intake. You should consume minimum 3 seasonal vegetables everyday 4. Stop eating when you are satisfied. Be aware of portion sizes. Eat a gap of 2 hours so that there is sustained release of energy. 5. Eat whole grains such as brown rice, whole wheat bread, and whole grain cereals, Oats 6. Enjoy two sources of low-fat dairy products every day: milk, yogurt. 7. Use cold pressed vegetable oils. 8. Limit saturated fat. Read the labels. And remember that fatty meats or cheeses, butter, and whole milk products have large amounts of saturated fat. 9. Eat 6 meals every day. Small portions at regular interval. 10. Target 8-10 glasses of water everyday. The best way to judge the water intake is by the colour of the urine. The yellowish it gets that means you are dehydrated and need to take water. Good nutrition is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. Combined with physical activity, your diet can help you to reach and maintain a healthy weight, reduce your risk of chronic diseases (like heart disease and cancer), and promote your overall health.

Dear user. Please understand, semen is a liquid base which contains sperm cells. when you ejaculate inside the vagina, the sperm cells are alive and they climb through the vaginal wall towards uterus and one will find the female egg for insemination. Left over seminal liquid and other immobile sperm cells flow out of vagina because they do not have any functions inside vagina further. this is normal procedure and there is nothing to worry about this. Take care.
