I am having ankylosing spondylitis, and gyming is my hobby but for concerning both these I had to take pain killers (indocap 75sr and ultracet)? now I am little worrying about their side effects. Please suggest. And please tell about any new remedies for ankylosing?

Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory joint disease which has a genetic predisposition. Since this is a genetically linked disease hence as of now there is no permanent cure for it, but new intravenous medications are available which help in disease control. You need a very active lifestyle with intensive regular physical therapy, take adequate calcium and vitamin d supplementation you also need to be in touch of a rheumatologist as it needs a long term supervised care. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

if u won't want surgery then Ayurvedic treatment & therapies are best option for you . consult with all reports & doubts. 1) Do massage with warm sesame oil or suitable oil for 15 min., afterwards take hot fomentation for 10 min. 2) Start natural calcium supplement. 3) Do regular stretching exercise 4) In yoga DO BHUJANGASAN, HALASAN & SURYANAMASKAR. This will give you relief in mild to moderate cases. Give feedback after 4days. LIFE-STYLE CORRECTION 1) Correct your sitting posture. 2) Take small pillow or back rest for lower back. 3) Foot should rest to floor easily. 4) Take small break after 1 hr & walk few steps. 5) Do neck & upper back extension, give feedback after 4 days

This is a general strain due to excessive walking or standing and for this you can follow these measures: one keep a pillow right under the knee while sleeping, next is you can keep ice in the painful area for about 5--10 minutes. One time you can do hot water fermentation that would help to reduce the muscle strain. My mother is 63 years old. She suffers from diabetes, abnormal blood pressure and knee pain. She is taking medicines for all the problems and everything is in control. The knee pain is a big issue but she keeps on doing her daily household jobs which keeps her active. She has the following queries and asked me to know about it from a doctor. 1. If the uric acid increases, will a patient have to consume medicines for controlling it during lifetime (like medicines for diabetes) or it shall be stopped once uric acid is controlled. 2. If Hand Rub or Sanitizer is used in the market or train or bus, whether it is necessary to wash hands or one can even eat after using Hand Rub without washing hands. 3. My mother used Melipox Spray for skin repair after consulting some doctor. Its new bottle is not being used at present. Where can Melipox be used? Thanks & Regards.

Hello, Thanks for the query. 1) To reduce uric acid avoid organ meats, certain sea foods like sardines, salmons, herrings, shell fish etc. 2) Avoid alcohol as well as drink less caffeinated drinks. 3) Drink plenty of water. Citrus drinks are good (orange juice, lemonade) 4) Increase the intake of green leafy vegetables and fruits. Medications need to be taken as when required. Washing hands with hand sanitizers is NOT HEALTHY. Most of these products contain some form of alcohol or trichlsan. These products remain on the hand and are not healthy. Washing with water is most healthy. Melipox spray is used to control itching and for softening the skin. Thanks.

From the limited info provided, there seems to be some infection spreading from your leg to your thigh. This is indeed unfortunate. If that is indeed the case, it is quite serious and needs emergency treatment. Whether to "remove" the leg (Surgical amputation) and at what level and when exactly to do it, depends on the treating doctor to decide, based on several factors. However, I must inform you that surgical amputation of a leg is a major surgery as it is irreversible and to be honest, decreases your life span considerably. Hence, a decision needs to be taken after seriously weighing all the options. Ideally, this decision should be taken by a team comprising of your treating physician, surgeon, vascular team, anesthesiologist, rehabilitation team, your family, etc.
