5 Home Remedies to Correct Yellow Teeth

5 Home Remedies to Correct Yellow Teeth

A sparkling set of shiny white teeth can make a smile more appealing and infectious. Yellow teeth can be extremely embarrassing and annoying. The important dental tissues that make up a tooth include the Enamel, Dentin, Cementum and the Pulp, of these four tissues, the enamel (the white and hard teeth surface) and the dentin (pale brown) are responsible for the tooth colour. Any damage to these two tissues bring about teeth discolouration and factors that contribute significantly towards yellowing of teeth include:

  1. Poor dental care and hygiene like improper and inadequate flossing and brushing techniques.
  2. Unhealthy lifestyle habits like chewing of tobacco and betel nuts, smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, tea and coffee.
  3. Certain medical conditions and treatments (chemotherapy and radiation) can adversely affect the dentin and the enamel. Antihistamines are also known to stain the teeth. It is best to avoid mouth washes containing Cetylpyridinium Chloride.
  4. With age, the enamel tends to thin naturally exposing the dentin that lies underneath it.
  5. Fluoride intake in excess can stain and discolour the teeth.
  6. Yellow or discoloured teeth can also be genetic.

Yellow teeth, though frustrating, can be fully treated. The mode and success of the treatment is largely influenced by the extent of the teeth discolouration.

  1. Avoid smoking and chewing of tobacco as much as possible. Control the intake of drinks and foods that can stain and discolour your teeth.
  2. Practice healthy dental hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily.
  3. Some whitening agents (over-the-counter) can be effectively used to treat yellow teeth.
  4. Dental veneers are a great way to deal with yellow teeth.
  5. For a healthy set of white teeth with pearly shine, visit your dentist every six months.

In addition, several natural and homemade remedies can also prove to be beneficial

  1. Nothing can treat yellow teeth more effectively than baking soda. Brushing your teeth with toothpaste mixed with baking soda (about a quarter teaspoon) can do the yellow teeth a world of good. Using a mixture of baking soda with vinegar (white), lemon juice and hydrogen peroxide is an effective natural remedy.
  2. A healthy practice to get rid of yellow teeth is to rub the teeth with orange peel every night.
  3. Rubbing the teeth with Strawberry paste will help to reduce the yellow stain greatly.
  4. The benefits of lemon are known to all. Brush your teeth with a mixture of lemon juice and salt. Wash it off after a few minutes and the yellow tinge will be a thing of the past.
  5. Charcoal, Apples and Basil leaves are powerful natural ingredients to treat yellow teeth.

Your smile is precious! Do not lose it to yellow teeth.

Everything You Need to Know About Dentures

Everything You Need to Know About Dentures

Teeth may be lost due to various reasons - decay, periodontal disease, age, trauma, etc. Whatever the reason, losing a tooth causes some side effects, as noted below:

  1. Reduced chewing efficiency, thereby affecting nutrition
  2. Aesthetics, more effect if front teeth are lost
  3. Structural support to the face - puckering can happen
  4. Overall nutrition affected

For someone who has lost a tooth or teeth, dentures are a boon. There are various options for people, and choice can be made based on economic, cosmetic, and overall health conditions.

Options:
Partial/complete: If only one or few teeth are being replaced, it is a partial denture. This can be fixed or removable. In case of old age or trauma where all teeth are lost, a complete denture would be in order. In most cases, this is a removable denture.

Fixed dentures/Removable dentures: Depending on whether the denture is fixed in the mouth or can be removed when not in use.

Metal or ceramic or combination: In some cases, for aesthetic or economic reasons, the patient can decide to go for a metallic fixed partial denture. The fabricated crowns will have a metallic surface but is acceptable given the strength, especially in posterior teeth, which take a heavy mastication load.

In cases of front teeth loss, the denture should almost always be a ceramic one, especially for cosmetic reasons. If the person cannot afford, a removable denture can be done.

The optimal denture should be chosen based on a number of factors including the functional and aesthetic expectations.

Caring for dentures: It depends on the types of dentures you choose.
Fixed dentures: This requires religious brushing, flossing or interdental brushing, and rinsing. The edges of the denture can put pressure on the gums and cause irritation, this needs to be watched for.

Removable dentures:

  1. Clean the dentures after every meal
  2. Be careful when handling them to avoid fall and breakage
  3. Handle the clasps with care, altered clasps may not fit properly
  4. Clean the bone and gums around the denture after each meal
  5. Soak the dentures overnight in water or a denture-soaking solution
  6. Avoid soaking it in hot water, can lead to warping of the denture plate
  7. Avoid hard brushing of the dentures

With any denture in the mouth, visit the dentist regularly every 6 months to keep a constant vigil on your overall dental health. Ill-fitting dentures, especially, need to be corrected immediately as they can lead to irritation, ulcers, and even infections.

With these small precautions, the denture can function to its optimal level and serve as a good replacement of the lost tooth. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a dentist.

BDS
Dentist,
Electric toothbrushes are more effective at removing plaque. Those with heads that
rotate in both directions and pulsate are the most effective.
They are particularly useful for people with limited movement, such as disabled or elderly people, who often find that using a manual toothbrush does not allow them to clean thoroughly.

Dear dr, I am 40 years old and have 3 milk teeth at lower jaw and 1 at upper. I seen a dentist recently and after x-ray he found 4 original teeth inside the chin. As such I don' t have any pain or other problem. Any suggestion?

Milk are supposed to be exfoliated at the age of 7 to 8 yrs as it is the age for permanent tooth to erupt. You have over retained teeth.

Sir, my problem is mouth ulcers. I want to know whether it is due to excessive use of pain killers that I have taken during spinal injury?

ENT Specialist, Visakhapatnam
Might be. Might be not. But mouth ulcers are seen in people undergoing stress. If you have stopped eating vegetables and fruits regularly, then it may add to the problem. Eat lot of amla, guava, lemon, leafy vegetables, badam, cashew n other dry fruits. Maybe even try some vitamin syrup. Your ulcers will slowly resolve with you stress dear brother. God bless you get well soon.

There is also bleeding from the gums and foul smell from the mouth. The teeth become loose this maybe what is commonly known as pyorrhoea. However you need to consult a qualified dentist and get your teeth cleaned and the gums treated.

Soft drinks, cordials and fruit juices should be consumed in a limited quantity because they are acidic in nature. Acidic food or drinks often soften the tooth material which leads to the dissolution of minerals into the tooth enamel, resulting in cavities (holes).

Dear lybrate user! It is must to wear retainer after dental brace removal for adequate time. The main purpose of using orthodontic retainer is to stable the teeth moved in new place with the help of orthodontic braces. So don't use a repaired retainer due to loss of it's ability to perfectly retain your orthodonticaly moved teeth. Ask your orthodontist for new retainer. You can also ask your orthodontist for wire free retainer with teeth slot in it. It is more comfortable than wired retainer.

I have remove one of my tooth six months back. I want to put new artificial tooth now. I am confused regarding should I go for implant or I should go for tooth bridge?

BDS
Dentist,
Going for an implant would be a better option as it would preserve the adjacent teeth. However the best option can be suggested after thorough examination and x rays.

Hello, you can do warm salt water rinses as a home remedy. This will give you temporary relief from pain. You need to visit the dentist and get it checked. Get an x-ray done. If there is a cavity, get it filled. If there is infection to the root of the tooth, you need to get it treated. Then get a crown placed over it.

BDS
Dentist,
Read carefully:

If you haven't had your teeth cleaned in the last 3 to 6 months you could be spreading infection to the rest of your body. Please prevent oral systemic health issues by getting your teeth cleaned regularly from your dentist or hygienist. According to the american academy of periodontology, several studies have shown periodontal disease to be associated with heart disease.
