Surgical Removal of Ovary - How To Prepare for It?

DGO , MBBS
Gynaecologist, Pune
Surgical Removal of Ovary - How To Prepare for It?

The part of the woman’s reproductive system where the eggs are stored and released for fertilisation, are known as the ovaries. The ovaries also produce various hormones. When a female patient has to go through a procedure to remove the ovaries, this surgical procedure is known as an oophorectomy. The patient may have to go through this procedure for a number of reasons. Let us find out more about the procedure and the recovery of the patient thereafter.

Causes: There are a number of reasons as to why a patient may have to go through this procedure. One of the most common reasons include pelvic diseases like ovarian cancer which makes it imperative to remove the ovaries so that the cancer does not spread to any other part of the uterus or the rest of the body. Also, when the endometriosis becomes particularly painful and severe, the patient may have to go through a hysterectomy to remove the uterus and an oophorectomy to remove the ovaries. Most of the times, these two procedures go hand in hand. Also, when the patient is suffering from breast cancer, the doctor may deem it fit to remove the ovaries to stop the spread and growth of the cancer. Other hereditary diseases may also be treated with this procedure.

Preparation: In order to prepare for the surgery, one will need to go through a series of imaging tests like an ultrasound as well as an MRI scan which will help the doctor decide on the kind of procedure that needs to be carried out. Most doctors will ask you to stop eating at least a day before the surgery and to ingest a solution so that the intestines are properly cleaned out. Also, if you are taking any kind of medication, you will need to stop taking the same before the surgery.

Procedure: The procedure can be done either with one large incision or with multiple small incisions, depending on the area and the severity of the problem that is being treated. The surgeon will insert a small tube bearing a camera into this incision, which in turn will beam the images on to a screen in the operating theatre. The ovaries will be separated from the blood supply before the tissue surrounding them will be placed in a pouch. This pouch will be pulled out through the smaller incisions.

Recovery: How soon you recover depends on how soon you choose to sit up and start walking after the surgery. One can get back to normal life within a few weeks or a month after the surgery by taking small steps every day. Complete recovery takes about six weeks. f you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist and ask a free question.

I am a 23 year old female and my partner and I have unprotected sex every time we do it. Since September, I have not had my period but there was the occasional discharge. Now I am having an increase in this discharge starting towards the end of April. Also I took a pregnancy test and it showed nothing. Am I infertile? Please help. Its been 8 months since ive missed my period.

MD Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Ahmedabad
It is very unusual for a woman to have missed her periods for 8 months without pregnancy. Have you got a ultrasound done. You might be having secondary amenorrhea. You need to get some blood tests done to rule out major hormonal imbalance.

MBBS

Give a gap of at least six months now to conceive again and once you are pregnant get under the treatment and guidance of your obstetrician immediately to take proper treatment and precautions sometimes too early repeated pregnancies can cause abortions.

I guess your last period was april 17 and not may 17. If you say you are pregnancy then that means it's around 4-5 weeks. If you wish to discontinue or terminate the pregnancy you should consult a gynecologist for an appropriate and safe method of termination. Do not use medicines without consulting a doctor.

I want to know that in my folds of vagina always there is a white deposition, is it normal or does this white thing need to be removed and if yes then how and also I had a recent urine test and there was no urine infection.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Nashik
Hello lybrate-user, the white deposition in the folds of the female genetalia is quite normal. It should be removed regularly. If it is not removed then it can provide a gud medium of infection mostly fungal. So I wud suggest you to remove it regularly. Method of removing it is if its not sticky then you can remove it with plain water while taking a bath. Kindly do not use any hard soap or scrub as it might lead to abrasions.

Patients of Diabetes have many fears pertaining to conception, pregnancy and effects of Diabetes on their newborn children. I would explain some things relating to diabetes and pregnancy to delineate precautions and expectations that a diabetes patient should have at the time of pregnancy. Diabetes has no particular effect on the ability to conceive - diabetics achieve pregnancy just like people without diabetes. But If you have diabetes, keeping your blood glucose as close to normal as possible before and during your pregnancy is important to stay healthy and have a healthy baby. The targets for sugar control that are normally expected without pregnancy are different from the sugar targets which are expected during pregnancy. The high sugar levels are maximally dangerous during the first 3 months of pregnancy because it is during this duration that baby's organ formation happens. Moreover, the choice of medicine that a doctor would make during pregnancy is based on the side effects of medicines and some medicines are generally avoided by doctors in pregnancy. More so, the most natural and easy medicine for Diabetes is INSULIN and any good diabetologist/endocrinologist would be prescribing more insulin during pregnancy than otherwise. I can be reached by anyone through private consults for specific information on their queries!

Dear since your gf has concieved it is better to take her to gynaecologist and confirm intrauterine pregnancy. And if both of you plan termination, get it done by gynaecologist. Dont try these home remedies, can lead to disaster.
