Types and treatment of Thyroid disorders

A big Hi to everybody. I am Dr Hardik Thakker. Today I take this opportunity to speak about Thyroid Disorders.

As we know Thyroid disorders are very common among the Indian population. They are so more common in the female population. So, today I will mainly speak about the two types of thyroid disorders.

  • Hypothyroidism:  This is the most common kind of thyroid disorder. It is more commonly seen in females. It is the condition wherein thyroid is not produced in enough amount in the body. The most common cause is the Autoimmune hypothyroidism. Because the body does not produce enough amount of thyroid so you may have some complaints such as weight gain, irregular menstrual periods, laziness and so on.

So what we do in such a situation is, we correct the TSH level by supplementing Exogenous thyroid hormone. That will take care of the symptoms of the patients and the weight will also come back to normal. Constipation which we generally see in old age is somewhere related to Hypothyroidism. And we should be checking the thyroid level in old patients who always complain about constipation.

  • Hyperthyroidism:  This is the second most common thyroid disorder, which is called as grave's disease. In this case, the thyroid is being produced in an excess amount in the body by the thyroid glands. This causes problems such as anxiety, Palpitations, High BP, irregular menstrual periods, Insomnia, weight loss and so on. The damage to thyroid glands is by the autoimmune antibody, which is thyroid receptor antibody. This is causing such problems.

The treatment to such problems is to get down the thyroid hormone production in the body. So we give some medication which helps down the thyroid production in the body and also takes care of the symptoms for hyperthyroidism.

  • So the first and the foremost health tip would be once you get up in the morning one can have a glass of water with one lemon. This is one of the best ways to boost your metabolism, because as we know, lemon is a booster, it boosts your daily basic metabolic rate and helps you to lose more calories. This is to be taken in the morning on an empty stomach.
  • The second health tip would be to avoid any foods which are rich in sugars or pastries or sweets, and to prefer to have more of complex carbohydrates in every day diet.
  • The third health tip would be to have at least a jog or a cardio workout every day for thirty minutes. This is again to help you lose the calories and boost your metabolism. It’s only when you lose the calories that your fat depots go down.
  • The fourth tip would be to have enough of sleep because good sleep is very important for the body to rest, and to do justice to whatever workout you have done.
  • And the fifth tip is to have a weight training schedule at least five times in a week. This is to build muscles, so once you have more muscle tissue it is having a higher metabolic rate and it helps you to lose fast.

It is one of the most dreaded diseases, which can infect a person. As you know about the mode of transmission,

  • the most common mode of transmission is through the sexual route, whether through the heterosexual route or through the homosexual route.
  • The second common mode of transmission is accidental injury or from needle stick injuries or accidental injury from blood contamination; that is, contamination of the body surfaces with the blood.
  • The third, uncommon cause though, is through blood transfusion.
  • The fourth cause, which is not very common these days, is through the pregnancy, and we are using medication so that this does not happen to the child.

Coming back to the disease, what happens is, with this disease, it affects the helper T cells of your immune system. So as a result of this the CD4 cells, they decrease in the number and the helper cells decrease in the body and they are not able to mount an immune attack on any infection and they can come and attack your body. As a result, the immunity of the person goes down, he gets more vulnerable to infections like tuberculosis, fungal infections, candida infections, respiratory infections, diarrhoea and meningitis. This is because, the immune system is hijacked by the virus. And that is the reason, this is a disease everybody is afraid of. At the moment we do not have any curative options available.

However, we do have medications that help you to suppress the viral load. As a result the CD4 counts increase, and your immunity increases, and the people live a longer life. A big Hi to all the viewers. I am Dr. Hardik Thakkar an MB physician practicing in Mumbai. I would like to take this opportunity to talk to you about coronary artery disease.

As the word suggests coronary artery disease is a lifestyle disorder which affects the blood vessels of the heart. What happens in you is there are these cholesterol throbey blocks as we call them in layman’s term which deposit in the arteries and then they cause blockage to your micro circulation in the heart. So because of this what happens is the patient complains of pain in the chest, breathlessness, leg swelling, and sometimes even palpitations and a lot of diabetic patients may just get asymptomatic MIs which is these blocks will be there but they may not have any symptoms as I mentioned before.

Now this disease is dreadful because a lot of times these episodes come suddenly in the middle of the night and you may not have enough time to respond and a lot of these patients if they have a very significant amount of block like more than 90 or may be a 100 percent block. They may even die within hours of reaching the hospital. This is the gravity of the situation and hence one has to act very very fast if it all you get a chest pain.

But to begin with since we are talking about lifestyle modification we want to know what is in the lifestyle which leads to the coronary artery disease. As we all know a lot of people from the urban areas who are having sedentary who are not eating right. They are not sleeping right and they are not even working out so all this puts a huge oxidant stress and the wrong diet along with high fi diet which leads to cholesterol deposition and the plagues in the coronary arteries. So what should be done? I mean we need to start at a young age because it is not as we have to wait till 40 and start acting because this plague starts developing as early as 15 years of age. To begin with to prevent the coronary artery disease you have to start early, eat healthy right from your young age. Workout regularly and have an active lifestyle and avoid smoking and alcohol. Smoking is one of the major confounding factors which predisposes to lot of damage to endothelium of your arteries.

So leading a good lifestyle right from the beginning is very very important to you know take care of your coronary artery disease and diabetics as a matter of fact are at a very high risk of having coronary artery disease as compared to the general population. And I would also recommend the public I mean the regular people at least above 40 years to have a stresses done at least once a year along with your lipid profile sugar. This is just to make sure you are on a right track and you are not missing a coronary artery disease. I would like to talk a little bit in brief on this stress test which is you know a test which used to diagnose Angina.

So what we do we make a patient run on treadmill for ten minutes and we record ECGs of all the ten minutes along with the BP changes and if it all if a person has a hidden heart disease not reflected on his symptoms we pick it up and this is followed by the angiography. Once the angiography is done depending on the amount if blocks that are found we treat the patient either medically or with stents or by bypass. This is dictated by the number of arteries the location of plague and the extent of the block. So that’s about it for coronary artery disease at the moment.

Hi, to all the viewers. I am Dr. Hardik Thakker, an M. D. physician practicing from Mumbai. I would like to take this opportunity to talk about diabetes mellitus, As you all know, diabetes is a very common lifestyle disorder that we see in India. In fact, 7.1% of the adult Indian population is afflicted by this disease. If you go by world ranking, India ranks 1 as per the total number of diabetic patients in India followed by China and the United States. So this number by itself shows the burden of the disease.

Now, what I commonly see in our practice is there are a lot of newly diagnosed patients who do not have any symptoms but they have just done a random sugar check and are diagnosed to have diabetes. So the moral of the story is that one does not need to have symptoms. Typically, a diabetic would have a history of increased urination, increase of water intake, weight gain or weight loss. Sometimes, they may develop complications like eye issues, peripheral neuropathy which is tingling and numbness in the nerves and sometimes they come with foot ulcers but a majority of the patients are asymptomatic. So, a sincere request to all the viewers to have your sugars checked once a year at least just to be sure that you are not missing out on your own disease.

Now, I am going to speak about the types of diabetes, why does it happen and what are the things that happen in diabetes. There is Type 1 diabetes which is found in people less than 20 years of age, and then there is autoimmune destruction of the pancreas because of which the secretion of insulin is not there and hence the sugars are high. These patients need only insulin and there are no medications for them. The second and the most common type is Type 2 diabetes which you will find in people above 40 years of age. The typical age in Mumbai or in India for that matter is 42 years which is the age of presentation and they usually treated with medications and sometimes with add-on insulin.

There is a third uncommon variant called the MODY which is Mode Dematurity Onset Diabetes which also needs insulin and it has some autoimmune disorders and genetic predispositions. In diabetes, there are sugars present in the blood in very high amounts which damages a lot of your organs. For example, the most common organ is the nerve. So it leads to neuropathy, people get tingling and numbness in the nerves. Also, another most common organ is the heart. Diabetes can cause blockages in the heart which leads to heart attack. The third common is the eye, specially the retina. It causes retinopathy and people have decreased vision and sometimes they see floaters in the eyes.

Fourth, most common complication is the foot ulcer. We do not want people to have these complications and hence the reason to diagnose and treat early and eat right. With regard to lifestyle management, I would sincerely request diabetic patients to have a brisk walk for 30 minutes every day. This by itself will increase your insulin sensitivity and help you to decrease the dose. Second thing is eating healthy which makes a huge difference to your sugar levels, to have a very low calorie meal, specifically avoid sugars and exercise. So, that is all I would like to say on diabetes.

Acute Bronchitis - Know The Causes and Treatment Of It!

As we go about life and routine activities, we may be exposed to a lot of different types of environments. We may have to travel in heavy traffic and may be exposed to vehicular pollution, there may be times when we are at places that allow smoking and that may expose us to smoke from cigarettes. Our nature of work today requires us to be constantly in a situation where we take in industrial fumes and exhausts. Being in any of these conditions temporarily may not be a big matter of worry, but when the incidents get more frequent they may lead to troubles in breathing and diseases such as bronchitis or acute bronchitis.

Acute bronchitis is a condition in which the bronchial tube that carries air to and from the lungs gets inflamed due to different reasons. The biggest hazard related to the inflammation of the bronchial tube is that the patient may suffer from constant coughing and irritation of the throat putting pressure on the lungs. In advanced cases, a bronchial infection may also leave the nodes of the lungs inflamed, making it more difficult for the patients to breathe.

Causes of Acute Bronchitis:

  1. The most common causes of bronchitis include the infection of the bronchial tube with bacteria or virus, which lead to the inflammation of the tube and subsequent bouts of coughing.
  2. A habit of smoking cigarettes or being exposed to cigarette smoke as a passive smoker may lead to the infection of the bronchial tube.
  3. Vehicular smoke and fumes also lead to the inflammation and infection of the tube that plays an imminent role in supplying oxygen to the lungs.
  4. Finally, when one works in a position where he/she is exposed to chemicals or harmful exhausts on a constant basis may also have to suffer from acute bronchitis.

What is the treatment for acute bronchitis?

Bed rest and supportive care such as reducing coughing are the main treatments for acute bronchitis. In most individuals, antibiotics are not needed, especially those who have as cause viral or environmental factors. For some patients who have wheezing with their cough, beta2 agonists may be helpful (bronchodilators). Perhaps the most useful treatments are directed at reducing coughing symptoms with over the counter preparations containing guaifenesin and mucolytics. NSAIDs are often added to reduce inflammation and help relieve discomfort. However, the American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend giving OTC cough and cold medications to children under two years of age; these medicines may cause harmful side-effects that can be life-threatening to young children.

What natural or home remedies treat and cure acute bronchitis?

  • Stay well hydrated by drinking fluids
  • Breath humidified air
  • Avoid dairy products because they thicken mucous secretions
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine because of potential drug interactions

Pneumonia is a lung infection that affects one or both lungs. It can be triggered by bacteria, virus or fungi and causes inflammation in the lung’s air sacs that make it difficult to breathe. Pneumonia can range from a mild infection to being a life threatening condition. This severity depends on the age and general health of the patient along with the cause of the inflammation and type of infection.
Pneumonia can be classified in many ways. There are three main types of pneumonia based on the type of microbe that causes the infection; bacterial, viral and mycoplasmic pneumonia.

  1. Bacterial Pneumonia: Streptococcus pneumonia is the most common cause of bacterial pneumonia. It can affect people at any age and can develop on its own or be triggered by flu. A weak immune system increases the risk of suffering from this condition. Breathlessness and pain while breathing are some of the symptoms associated with this type of pneumonia.
  2. Viral Pneumonia: When it comes to young children and the elderly, pneumonia is often caused by respiratory viruses. This type of pneumonia is short lived but the virus that triggers the infection can be fatal. Viral pneumonia can be extremely harmful to pregnant women and individuals with heart or lung issues.
  3. Mycoplasma pneumonia: This is also known as atypical or walking pneumonia. It affects people of all age groups but is commonly seen in cases where the patient is below 40 years of age. Mycoplasma pneumonia cases are usually mild with a persistent cough being the most prominent symptom.

Pneumonia is not always caused by microbes. Aspiration pneumonia can be contacted by inhaling a foreign object such as food, drinks or regurgitated food into the lungs. This type of pneumonia affects the elderly and people under sedation or anesthesia. Along with breathing difficulties, it also causes a decreased gag reflex and difficulty swallowing food.

Though it is not possible to completely prevent pneumonia, the risks of contacting this disease can be easily lowered. Some of the steps you could take to lower your chance of suffering from this disease are:

  1. Avoid close contact with people suffering from viral infections like flu, colds, etc.
  2. Wash your hands often to prevent the spreading of viruses and bacteria
  3. Stop smoking and avoid exposure to second hand smoke
  4. Get vaccinated against the bacteria that cause pneumonia
  5. Get vaccinated against flu to prevent seasonal colds

When diabetes in a person is not properly regulated and maintained, the blood-sugar levels rise up and this syndrome is called 'hyperglycaemia' or high blood sugar. The way sugar particles stick to each other when they are left uncovered for some time, blood vessels within human body also get stuck with sugar in the blood and make it difficult for blood circulation. Secondly, diabetes leads to poor blood circulation, which makes it nearly impossible for sores and infection around the feet to heal. Once the healing process stops, it can even pave the way for amputation.

Lastly, diabetes is equally detrimental for kidneys, which are the filters of the human body. Kidneys are filled with miniature blood vessels, and high blood sugar can lead to clogged vessels, which disturb blood circulation. Once the kidney does not get ample oxygen and blood, lesser amounts of fluids are taken off the body that may subsequently lead to kidney failure.

Hence, it is important to eat right. Our diet should have a mix of about 40% complex carbohydrates like oats, whole wheat, brown bread, ragi, semolina and so on. High quality proteins should contribute 30% of our diet. Eggs, chicken, fish, meat, dal and pulses are good examples. Fats especially MUFA and PUFA should make 20% of the diet. Classic examples are sunflower oil, olive oil, rice bran oil. Avoid saturated fats, trans fats, margarine, ghee and butter. Pastry, Khari biscuits, toasts, cookies are rich in unhealthy saturated fats; hence best avoided. We should consume at least 3 servings of fruit daily. This is important because fruits are rich in vitamins, fibre and anti-oxidants.

Sleep well:

A rested mind in a rested body is the best state of happiness. We need to sleep at least 7 to 8 hours daily. The body recharges during the rest and makes it ready for the next day aggressions. With the smartphone entering our bedroom, the sleep pattern has been disturbed. We end up sleeping late while checking Whats App messages and so on. As a result the total sleep duration goes down and we get up in an irritable and sleep deprived state. Such a state is not conducive to healthy work the next day. Avoid checking smartphone apps and messages, reading newspapers just before sleeping and avoid tea/coffee/caffeine in any form post 7pm. This will make sure we sleep on time and get up on time.

Exercise:

This is the last and the most important mantra that can lead to ultimate bliss and happiness. We need to exercise at least 30 min daily for 5 days a week. This can be aerobic exercises like cycling, swimming, jogging, running and so on. Weight lifting for 45 min daily for about 5 days a week is ideal to build a well sculpted and muscular beach body that we all want. Exercising keeps our joints mobile, conditions our heart to strain, releases growth hormone and testosterone which keep you young. Endorphins released in the brain during the exercise make you feel good as though you are on the seventh sky.

A heart attack is usually characterised by the rupture of a plaque which can cause the spread of the cholesterol into the blood stream. Cardiovascular diseases are a major cause of pain, suffering and death around the world, today. Heart attacks are caused by coronary heart disease.

This is caused by the narrowing of the coronary artery when substances like cholesterol block it. If not treated and revived on time, a patient suffering from a heart attack can meet a fatal result. So how can you prevent a heart attack?

  1. Cholesterol: We are all affected to some extent by what we eat. It is important to keep a check on your cholesterol, especially if it is on the higher side, so as to prevent a heart attack. Cholesterol is known to directly cause a heart attacks, because if applies layer upon layer to the walls of the artery, and chokes them until they cannot handle the pressure any longer. So watch your food intake and bring down the blood lipid or fat levels with proper diet and exercise to alleviate the risk of a heart attack.
  2. Assess your Risk Factors: So are you at risk of heart disease and possible heart attack? This will very much depend on your medical history and allied ailments. If you are suffering from high cholesterol or even diabetes, your chances of having clogged arteries and a subsequent heart attack may increase manifold. Also, you may have a family history of heart diseases which can increase the risk of such ailments in your case. So, it is wise to assess your risk factors and take measures like regular checkups, medication where required and even other measures like diet and exercise.
  3. Blood Pressure: To prevent a heart attack, you can also keep your blood pressure in check. Constant spikes and dips can lead to a malfunctioning heart which can weaken the heart muscles and lead to a fatal result like a heart attack. Further, high blood pressure can lead to wear and tear of the inner lining of your blood vessels, which makes it that much more difficult for blood flow and circulation. So keep a blood pressure measuring machine or cuff at home, or visit your doctor regularly to keep tabs on your blood pressure.

Gastric Problem - Can It Be Indicating Something Else?

Excessive gas can be defined as bloating, belching, flatulence and burping. It does not matter what you call it but what matters is how you treat it and get relieved from the embarrassing symptoms. 

Here are some ways in which you can avoid gastric problems:

  1. Avoid eating foods that can cause gas or acidity. The vegetables which are known to cause acidity are Brussels, onions, garlic and broccoli; dairy products like cheese, milk, ice cream and whole grains can cause acidity. The reason is that these products have fiber, starch and sugar which cannot be digested easily thus causing pain in the intestines. Fruit which contain sorbitol and aerated drinks should also be avoided. Eat everything but in moderation.
  2. Avoid drinking before meals as the stomach acids are lost and the food cannot be digested well. Water and liquids should be had half an hour after a meal for a better digestion.
  3. Food should be eaten slowly. Eating and drinking fast allows a lot of air to go in the stomach with the food. This in turn can cause a stomach pain.
  4. Over the counter drugs can be taken for immediate help in digestion. These medicines contain enzymes which aid in digestion. The enzyme works to dissolve the sugar that is found in many vegetable and fruit.
  5. Do not fill air in the stomach. Some habits like chewing gum, drinking from a straw, smoking causes the air to fill in the stomach, thereby, leading to gas.
  6. Artificial sweeteners such as Sorbitol should be avoided as these are difficult to digest and can easily lead to a feeling of bloating. 

However, all the pains might not be due to gas and could be a sign of something serious. These could be:

  1. Lactose intolerance: This is the inability to digest milk and milk products. The sugar in the milk known as lactose and cannot be digested easily. 
  2. Irritable bowel syndrome: People who suffer with pain in the lower abdomen constantly might be suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
  3. Colon cancer: If the pain lasts too long then getting a screening done is a good idea to rule out if one is suffering from colon cancer or not.
  4. Upper gastrointestinal disorders: If one gets belching occasionally then it is alright but a constant belching might be a sign of gastrointestinal disorder in the upper tract. These could be gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastroparesis, or peptic ulcers. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

the best scenario will be to slowly taper down one oha at a time. if the sugars remain in normal range then you can eventually stop the medicine but in a step wise manner. do not abruptly stop all oha.

A very good evening to all of you. I am Dr Hardik Thakkar. I am a MD physician, and an infectious disease expert speaking from Mumbai. Today I would like to take this opportunity to speak to you on HIV.

It is one of the most dreaded diseases, which can infect a person. As you know about the mode of transmission,

  • the most common mode of transmission is through the sexual route, whether through the heterosexual route or through the homosexual route.
  • The second common mode of transmission is accidental injury or from needle stick injuries or accidental injury from blood contamination; that is, contamination of the body surfaces with the blood.
  • The third, uncommon cause though, is through blood transfusion.
  • The fourth cause, which is not very common these days, is through the pregnancy, and we are using medication so that this does not happen to the child.

Coming back to the disease, what happens is, with this disease, it affects the helper T cells of your immune system. So as a result of this the CD4 cells, they decrease in the number and the helper cells decrease in the body and they are not able to mount an immune attack on any infection and they can come and attack your body. As a result, the immunity of the person goes down, he gets more vulnerable to infections like tuberculosis, fungal infections, candida infections, respiratory infections, diarrhoea and meningitis. This is because, the immune system is hijacked by the virus. And that is the reason, this is a disease everybody is afraid of. At the moment we do not have any curative options available.

However, we do have medications that help you to suppress the viral load. As a result the CD4 counts increase, and your immunity increases, and the people live a longer life. Haemoglobin - Foods That Improve It!

Haemoglobin is a protein rich in iron and is found in red blood cells. The main function of haemoglobin is to carry oxygen throughout the body. In other words, it carries oxygen from the lungs to the other parts of the body so that the cells can carry on with their basic functions. It also carries carbon dioxide back to the lungs from those cells so that this gas can be exhaled.

Haemoglobin is important for maintaining a healthy life. The normal levels of haemoglobin in human body include:
• 14-18g/dl for adult men
• 12-16g/dl for adult women

Foods that improve haemoglobin

  1. Consume iron-rich food products: According to National Anaemia Action Council, lack of iron is the most common cause behind low haemoglobin levels. To improve iron content in your blood, you can take asparagus, tofu, almonds, oysters, fortified breakfast cereals, liver, red meat, shrimp, spinach, dates and lentils. However, consult your doctor for the right intake, as too much consumption of iron may be harmful for your health.
  2. Improve your vitamin C intake: Absorption of iron is improved if vitamin C is taken in adequate quantities. Lemon, tomatoes, papaya, oranges, strawberries, bell peppers, broccoli, grapefruit, etc. are some of the fruits that are rich in vitamin C. In fact, if there is a deficiency of vitamin C in our blood, haemoglobin levels go down. You may also take vitamin supplements to improve haemoglobin in your body, but consult a doctor first.
  3. Focus on food items rich in folic acid: This acid is basically vitamin B complex, which is required to make red blood cells. Food products that are rich in folic acid include rice, liver, breakfast cereals, sprouts, dried beans, wheat germ, peanuts etc. A diet comprising 200-400 milligrams of foliates is enough to supplement your Vitamin B needs.
  4. Include beetroot as a part of your diet: Rich in iron, folic acid, fibres and potassium, beetroot helps in augmenting haemoglobin levels. Drinking beetroot juice daily increases the iron content in your red blood cells.
  5. Have apples: They are rich in iron and if you have an apple daily, then your haemoglobin level will improve significantly. If possible, take a green apple with its skin. Apple juice mixed with beetroot juice has a marked effect on haemoglobin levels. You can also add some ginger or lemon juice to this mixture and have the concoction twice a day.
  6. Eat blackstrap molasses: This food is rich in iron, vitamin, folic acid etc. and improves the haemoglobin level in your blood. Take 2 tablespoons of blackstrap molasses and apple cider vinegar each, mix them in a cup of water and drink this concoction once a day.

Burp A Lot? 8 Ways You Can Prevent It!

After eating a meal to your heart’s content, it is very normal to burp or belch. However, it is normal only when it happens occasionally, or after a meal, for someone used to a contented meal every single time. On the other hand, excessive burping or belching can happen due to two reasons.

  1. Excessive air intake: There are multiple ways that excessive air can reach the food pipe. Sucking on straws, chewing gum constantly and ill-fitting dentures are some common reasons for burping.
  2. Digestive problems: Ulcers in the stomach, prolonged gastric, gallstones and rarely, esophageal or stomach cancers can also cause burping.

When to see a doctor
Check with a doctor if you have persistent burping, followed by a meal or otherwise, and accompanied by the following symptoms.

  1. Nausea
  2. Bloody stools
  3. Abdominal pain
  4. Vomiting
  5. Weight loss
  6. Fever

Preventing belching

  1. Go slow when eating and/or drinking: Most of us are pressed for time and eating and/or drinking has now become a task that needs to be finished quickly. Eating fast causes air to be swallowed, and therefore one of the best ways to stop burping is to eat slowly. Sitting in a calm, relaxing environment when eating also allows one to enjoy the food and avoid or stop burping.
  2. Avoid taliking while eating: There is always so much to catch up, whether at home or outside. So, talking while eating is a common practice. This is not just bad manners, but there is also a lot of air that is swallowed, which leads to burping. A solution is to chew the food properly, which not just helps stop burping, but also aids in better food digestion by mixing it adequately with saliva.
  3. Substitute coke with water: Carbonated drinks are another reason for belching. Replacing them with water, tea, or anything noncarbonated is advisable, not just from burping perspective, but also from the excessive sugar consumption. Carbonated drinks are just sugar solutions, and are absolutely of no nutritive value.
  4. Avoid straw: When possible, drink from a glass and avoid straws. This reduces the amount of gas taken in and helps stop burping
  5. Quit smoking: Quitting it has multiple health benefits, and getting rid of smoking is just one of them.
  6. Dentures: Ill-fitting dentures can be a reason for belching, and so they should be checked and corrected, if required, in a person who has persistent burping.
  7. Chewing gum: Constantly chewing gum contributes to burping, and so avoiding chewing gum or sucking on hard candy is another way to control burping.
  8. Avoid certain foods: Foodstuffs like broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, sprouts, and lentils can produce excessive gas and should be avoided in people who have persistent burping.

Follow the above steps in your daily routine; still if your burping problem persists, it is time to consult your physician.

Dandruff is one of the most common chronic hair conditions. It is characterized by a white, flaky substance on the scalp. Dandruff is not a serious condition and neither is it contagious. However, people still want it gone so that their hair looks better. Here are the symptoms as well as the causes of dandruff.

Causes:

  1. Skin drying up: Dry skin is the most common cause of dandruff. The flakes from dry skin are usually less oily and smaller than with other forms of dandruff.
  2. Seborrhoeic dermatitis: Dandruff can also be caused by oily irritated skin. In this type of dandruff, red, greasy skin has flaky white or yellow scales covering it.
  3. Infrequent shampooing: This is also a very common cause of dandruff. This is because oil and skin cells accumulate, thus resulting in dandruff.
  4. Malassezia: Malassezia is a yeast like fungus. It is usually harmless and stays on the scalp of most adults. However, it is worth noting that sometimes the yeast may irritate the scalp and cause extra skin cells to grow. The skin cells then fall off and become flaky. 
  5. Contact dermatitis: Contact dermatitis is a sensitivity to health care products and when you use too much shampoo, hair styling products or other chemicals, such as paraphenylenediamine, the red, itchy, scaly scalp associated with dandruff is caused.
  6. Other skin conditions: There are many other skin conditions, which cause dandruff as well. These include eczema and psoriasis. Eczema is a chronic skin disease, which causes the skin to become inflamed. Psoriasis is another skin condition. It is characterized by thick scales forming resulting from rough, dry, dead skin cells which build up rapidly. 

These are just the causes of dandruff. Now you will see how to identify when you have dandruff by learning about the symptoms of dandruff.

Symptoms:

  1. The symptoms of dandruff are pretty easy to spot. All that happens is that you will see white, flaky, dead skin cells in your hair.

Many of us will get up with a hangover after partying away on the eve of the New Year. But worry not, these are a few proven ways to get rid of a hangover and start the New Year fresh and bushy tailed:

  1. Drink lots of water: Alcohol is extremely dehydrating. Water is thus, the world’s best hangover cure. Alcohol messes up with the way the kidneys function and the body ends up losing around four times more water than usual. This leads to dehydration and causes symptoms like that thumping headache and dry mouth.
  2. Drink some frizzy water with a dash of lemon: The water will rehydrate you and the lemon and lime juice content which is alkaline will help balance the acid in your gut, quelling feelings of nausea. Fizzy drinks also speed up the break down of alcohol in the gut shortening the duration of a hangover.
  3. Take a mild painkiller: Painkillers that are paracetamol based are ideal for curing hangovers. They help with the headaches and muscle cramps. Just make sure that you don’t pop aspirins as these can further irritate the stomach and can increase the feeling of nausea.
  4. Eat something mellow: A starchy and wholesome breakfast with toast is highly recommended. So are mellow foods like bananas, apples and rice. These soothing foods will fill up your stomach without irritating it.
  5. Quick headache cure: You can whip up a headache remedy by using off-the-shelf kitchen ingredients. All you have to do is mix one spoon of baking soda in water and drink it quickly to get rid of a headache. What also works is drinking the juice of a tomato mixed with lime. Even a serving of fresh tomato soup with basil can provide relief.
  6. Take a bath by all means, except hot water: January is a cold month and hot water is inviting, but it’s not the best for getting rid of a hangover. And that’s because hot water will only make your condition worse because your body is already feeling the heat due to last night’s alcohol consumption which increases ‘pitta’ or fire element in the body according to Ayurveda. A cold water bath will help, but if you can’t brave the cold, you could also go for a lukewarm shower.
  7. Get moving:  Get out in the open and indulge in a light workout or a brisk walk. This will break down the alcohol toxins into the sweat. A few yoga stretches and breathing exercises are good too.
  8. Sleep it off: This is probably the best option for treating a hangover as most hangovers don't last longer than 24 hours. Dengue Fever - Causes, Treatment, and Management

Dengue fever is a painful infection transmitted by the bite of one of the 4 closely related viruses that are carried by a type of mosquitoes known as Aedes mosquitoes. The infection is not directly from one person to another.

Symptoms: After the mosquito bite, symptoms set in about 4 to 6 days and can last up to 10 days (as noted below). Most are general symptoms which can be seen with any viral infection and therefore most dengue cases can go undetected.

  1. Sudden high temperature
  2. Pain behind the eyes
  3. Severe headache
  4. Swollen lymph nodes
  5. Severe bone and muscle pains (this can lead to suspicion of dengue)
  6. Fatigue
  7. Nausea and vomiting
  8. Skin rash that appears 3 to 5 days after the onset of fever
  9. There could be in some cases gum bleeding, easy bruising, or nose bleeding

The dengue triad of symptoms is fever, headache and the skin rash. This could lead to suspicion and blood tests that can lead to diagnosis.

The acute phase lasts for about 2 weeks in most cases and there is no antibiotic (it is a viral infection) cure for it. The treatment is therefore symptomatic, aimed at reducing fever and pains.

If left untreated, especially in children, a severe case called as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) can occur, which affects children under 10 years of age and can cause failure of the circulatory system. This can also occur when a person is developing dengue for the second time. This is a serious form and can even lead to death; therefore the symptoms should be taken seriously and attended to immediately.

Diagnosis: Confirmation of dengue is through a blood test, where the virus is tested for.

Treatment: Being a viral infection, antibiotics are not effective against dengue. Pain killers with acetaminophen are preferred. Aspirin is avoided, as it can worsen bleeding. Complete bed rest, hydration and good nutrition are essential parts of the treatment. Being under medical supervision also helps watch out for complications. There is a vaccine under development that could become available in the next couple of years.

Prevention:

  1. Always use mosquito repellents, even indoors
  2. While being outdoors, use clothes that cover the arms and legs fully
  3. Use a mosquito net if your area is highly infested with mosquitoes
  4. Ensure the windows and doors are closed during the evening
  5. If you are suspicious of having dengue, reach out to the doctor
  6. Reduce chances for mosquitoes breeding by keeping the house clean
  7. If there are family members with dengue, protect yourself and them from mosquitoes

Preventing dengue is the best way to manage it; however, if once infected, the person develops immunity to it. Reduced immunity can put the person at risk of developing the condition again.
