To some extent, redness in eye on awakening g is normal. For the burning sensation you can use any of lubricating eye drops available. I strongly recommend u stop tying hanky over ur eye...It may cause infection or injury to the eye. It would also do u good to have a routine eye examination.

Your glass power is not that high and need not to worry, ppl with -power generally have bigger eyes, if you feel like your eyes are going deep inside your socket, specks are not the reason, it happens because of improper nutrition or you r very thin.

Eye Floaters - When Should You Consult A Doctor?

MBBS, MS - Ophthalmology
Ophthalmologist, Delhi
Eye Floaters - When Should You Consult A Doctor?

Ever noticed spots or strands that ‘float’ into your line of vision. These are known as floaters. In most cases, they do not affect your vision, but can cause a lot of discomfort. Thus, in most cases they do not require treatment unless they affect your vision significantly. Floaters are more likely to stand out when looking at bright objects or something like a clear blue sky. Moving your eyes can shift the fluid in your eyes and move these floaters out of your line of sight.

Dust particles entering and irritating the eye should not be confused with floaters. Floaters can be described as flecks of a protein called collagen. These flecks can be seen when they are loosened from the back of the eye known as the vitreous. This can happen at any age but is more likely to affect people between the ages of 50 and 75. Being near sighted or suffering from cataract also increases your risk of seeing floaters. In rare cases, it can also be triggered by a disease in the eye, an injury to the eye, tumors or crystal deposits in the back of the eye.

Noticing the odd floater is not something to worry about. However, if you notice a sudden increase in the number and frequency of floaters in your eye, see flashes of light, have pain in the eyes or experience a loss of side vision, consult a doctor immediately. This could also be a sign of a more serious condition like a detached retina that requires immediate medical attention. Excessive floaters can be removed through a surgery known as a vitrectomy or laser vitreolysis. A vitrectomy involves the removal of vitreous gel from the middle of the eye and replacing it with silicone oil or a gas bubble. The surgery last 2 or 3 hours, but you may require an overnight stay in the hospital.

Laser vitreolysis is a more recent form of treatment for this condition. This pain free procedure involves the projection of a laser beam into the eye that focuses on large floaters to break them apart or vaporize them. This procedure can be performed as an outpatient and is considered safer than a vitrectomy. The form of treatment suited to a person will depend on a number of factors including their age, what the floaters look like, where they are located and the frequency of their appearance.

Hello lybrate-user. Sorry about your problem. It can be quite cumbersome to have a lot of discharge (sticky substance) coming from the eyes. There are multiple causes associated with it. Let me enumerate a few for you: (1)(1) allergy of the eye. It is usually caused by improper eye hygiene. There is a tendency to rub the eyes with fingers, handkerchief, cloth, etc. This is not a good habit because it tends to transmit lots of virus, bacteria and dust into the eye. Allergy usually presents with symptoms of watering (clear water), redness and itching of the eye. (2) infectious conjunctivitis: this is usually associated with white-yellowish discharge. If so, it would be a good idea to go and show to an eye specialist in person. (3) foreign body lodged in the eye. This is more commonly associated with people who drive 2 wheeler vehicles without protection. It occurs more commonly in one eye. Foreign bodies that commonly get lodged are eyelashes, insect wings, small insects, dust particles, iron particles (more common with people working in the iron industry) the solution for a foreign body lodged in the eye would be better provided by an eye specialist at the clinic. The basis of all these aforementioned problems is improper/ inadequate eye hygiene. Usually the body hygiene is taken care of quite well. This is not the same with the eyes. The reason being that we tend to rub our eyes with fingers, use handkerchief, clothes, etc. This would cause a lot allergy, bacteria and dust to get transferred to the eyes. So the prime thing to be remembered is to avoid touching the eyes with the above mentioned things. A good idea would be to keep washing your eyes 4 to 5 times daily with clean hands and clean water. This would enable the debris and the dust to be debulked and washed off. You could also use a lubricant eye drop 5 to 6 times daily along with an antibiotic eye drop 4 times in a day. Cover your eyes with appropriate wear (helmet/ sunglasses) when going out in dust or polluted environment. On the whole, adopt a holistic approach rather than just resorting to the medications. This will succeed in relieving you off your problems. Take care. Hope my suggestions helped you. Take care.

I am 18 year boy and my eyes are very weak so is there any way to secure my eyes or how can I my my eyes strong?

FICO, DNB Ophtalmology
Ophthalmologist, Gandhinagar
I am 18 year boy and my eyes are very weak so is there any way to secure my eyes or how can I my my eyes strong?
Weak eyesight has multiple factors associated with it. To enumerate a few: (1) refractive error- change of the power of glasses is the commonest cause of weak eyesight. In fact, if you have not used glasses previously, it might be possible that you might need to use them now. (2) age related changes in the lens of the eye-this is generally known as cataract. This is present in varying proportions in a majority of population above 55 years. This means that some degree of cataract is usually found in the age group over 55 years. (3) retina problem-different degenerations of the retina usually lead to weakening of the eyesight. The degeneration may be caused due to progressive age. It may also occur due to a high minus number of the eye (myopia). (4) cornea related problem- cornea is the anterior (front) part of the eye. Certain issues with the cornea may cause weakening of the eyesight. (5) weakness due to injury/ trauma/ accident: in this regard, it may be possible to salvage good vision if early intervention is done. (6) optic nerve related problems: at times, raised intra-ocular pressure or certain neurological conditions may cause drying up of the optic nerve and cause poor vision. This may be possible to treat in certain cases. Thus, it would be a good idea to consult an eye specialist in person and get your eyes evaluated for the cause of weakening eyesight. Hope my suggestions help. Feel free to contact me for any other details that you might require.

Hello Subhajit, The fluid in our eyes normally does have floaters. If the floaters come in the field of vision, thats when it starts getting irritating. You can ignore them as they usually reduce and disappear on their own without any medication. Otherwise you can use Tear eye drops which is a mild lubricant and provides general moisture to the eye keeping it healthy.

Hello lybrate-user. You could consider other alternatives to glasses such as using contact lens or getting operated in order to get rid of the refractive power of the eye. Operations done to remove the refractive error (power) of the eyes are known as refractive surgery (lasik, prk, etc). There are certain basic criteria that most patients need to fulfill before they can safely undergo refractive surgery. To enumerate, they are: (1) stability of refraction: the power of the eyes should have become stable for a period of 1.5 years minimum without any change. (2) curvature of the cornea should be tested by a technique which is known as topography. (3) thickness of the cornea should be measured by a test known as pachymetry. The minimum thickness required is 550 microns. (4) dilated retina evaluation: this is one of the most important tests that should be performed by a trained retina specialist. This test helps in detection of any offensive lesion on the central or peripheral retina. In case of any retinal abnormality, these should be treated before undergoing the surgery for number reduction. (5) there should be no pre-existent corneal abnormality. (example: corneal scar, opacity, defect, etc.) another important suggestion is that whenever you go for the assessment (the above mentioned tests), you should discontinue the use of contact lenses at least 4 weeks prior to the assessment. The reason for this being that use of contact lens temporarily alters the contour of the cornea. It takes around 3-4 weeks for the restoration of the original corneal contour after removal of the contact lens. Another important point is that you, as a patient, should be compliant to put post operative medication in your eyes for at least 2 months. There is bound to be some discomfort, watering, foreign body sensation, pain after the surgery in most cases-you should be ready to tolerate that. A leave from work for 7-10 days after the surgery should be generally sufficient. Last but not the least, you should set realistic expectations from this surgery. Though extremely rare, there is a remote possibility that the surgery may need to be repeated. Also, the need for subsequent treatment for the eye may be required. Thus, you should be compliant enough to trust and follow your eye specialist. In case you have any other queries, revert back. Hope my suggestions help you, take care, regards.

My eye is getting weak day by day, what should I do. Should I go for laser treatment?

FPRS, DNB Ophtalmology

My eye is getting weak day by day, what should I do. Should I go for laser treatment?
Glasses, contact lenses and surgery are the only three options for good vision if you having spectacle power lasik is a simple laser procedure which changes the shape of the cornea so that the light rays fall on the retina properly. It is a painless procedure. It is a day care procedure does not require any injections, does not require admission, you can simply resume your duties in 2 days. Cost varies from centre to centre. Side effects are usually limited to dryness of eyes for few months. We can do lasik anytime after age of 18 years. You need to undergo proper prelasik checkup to decide whether lasik is safe for you or not.
