An easy way to get whiter teeth, to floss and to lubricate the gums is to slosh the mouth with coconut, sunflower or sesame oil for 15 minutes and then spit it out. Get that extra shine by making use of this easy folk remedy known as oil pulling.

I am a chain smoker and have plaque behind my teeth now I have massive gum bleeding for last 2 weeks and I can't even brush properly even if I try to do it with finger entire water in my mouth turned red because of gum bleeding. What should I do?

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
We need more investigations with clinical examination to decide upon treatment. You may need deep cleaning along with surgical, gum strengthening procedure. Rinse your mouth thoroughly with a mouth wash after every meals. Use pepsodent tooth paste & gum paint for 2 to 3 weeks. Advance procedures can be done with laser. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush. Tooth brush to be changed every 2 months.

I was checking tips related to teeth on Lybrate and floss is recommended at a lot of places. Few of these questions popped up in my mind : 1. I am curious why it is not common in India? 2. I watched few videos on youtube to learn the proper way to floss. After watching the videos I felt like it will be loosen the gums as one is putting the pressure on them also. Second I felt like it will start thinning the enamel also from the teeth. I am worried unnecessarily or care should be taken while flossing?

General Physician, Mumbai
Remember flossing is to be used only for cleaning the between the teeth areas and is used to prevent the deposition of food particles which can lead to infection and has to be used cautiously and even in india though slow the trend is picking up and remember if you have already loose teeth than not to be done and it won't thin the enamel lining.

I am 32 years old lady. I have a cavity in my wisdom tooth. Can this be filled instead of removing as two of my hind teeth had been already removed and I have heard that removing of teeth makes eye sight weak. My eyes are already weak. So what shall I do?

MDS
Dentist, Kota
There is no relation between extraction of tooth and eye sight. Cavity in the wisdom tooth can be filled if the tooth is in self cleansing area. But if filling of the tooth wont help you much then extraction is the solution.

I am having little yellow teeth. What method at home can I use to whiten them without damaging the gum?

BDS
Dentist, Bangalore
here is home remedy for brighter teeth--- Mix several teaspoons of baking soda with enough fresh lemon juice (or water) to make a paste. Wipe your teeth and any extra saliva off of them with a paper towel. Put a good amount of paste onto your toothbrush and apply. Leave the paste on for 1 minute, then rinse, so as to avoid the acid effecting enamel. If you are using just water you can leave it on for up to 3 minutes. for faster result you can go for TEETH BLEACHING from dentist...

Be sure to cap your toothpaste, not your toothbrush. Covering the brush can trap moisture and encourage bacteria growth.

Hi my teeth are yellow in colour I tried all tooth paste but all in vain what should I do?

BDS
Dentist, Gurgaon
Teeth are yellow due to two factors. Extrinsic and intrinsic. If it is extrinsic then you have to get oral prophylaxis. And if it is intrinsic then you have two options either a teeth whitening (bleaching) or vineers. Thanx.

Salivary glands shrink with age producing less saliva,a natural antimicrobial that helps prevent decay, hence chew a sugarfree gum regularly to stimulate production of saliva.
