Have you correctly diagnosed it as tonsils as per doctor did you do the rapid strep test or throat swab culture? treatment for tonsillitis will depend on the nature of tonsils, if bacterial infection of tonsils then antibiotics can be prescribed. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

I have deviated septum towards left 4 month before I got sinusitis with maxillary and I have deviated sputum I have blocked nose always can not breath from left nose or sometime from right nose and I have ringing on ear every time I feel ear congested so please help me please suggest me something doc thanks in regards.

DORL, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Faridabad
Dear lybrate-user, what you are having is due to nose problem entirely. Weather change and anatomical variation of the nose leads to change in the aerodynamics of the nose hence leads to watery nose this most of the time is over sensitivity on nose to outer environment, and we consider this as allergy all the time. Sinus is a normal roomy structure around nasal cavity its infection called sinusitis, if a person suffering from nasal obstruction along with sinusits and mild to moderate nasal allergies it means most probably he is suffering from dns (deviated nasal septum. Nasal obstruction is because of the deviated portion of the nasal septum (this is the bony partition of the nose cavity. Allergies are because of the hampered muco-ciliary mechanism (normally mucus is produced in the nose to moisten our nose cavity, oral cavity, and help food bolus to move downward, this mucus is basically moves on the cilia of the nasal mucosa) this mechanism gets hampered and mucus start accumulating in the nose and sinus cavity which is why thick mucus comes from nose in patients of nose obstruction and person develops sinusiits. When a surgeon removes the nasal septum deviation has not been removed properly the symptoms persists, and patient thinks that the nose bone has again regrown. It is not because of regrowth but because of half surgery done or due to the non removal of the deviation (reason can be many) nowadays nasal septal deviation can be removed endoscopically. Everything is explained in this, I hope this will benefit you. And for ringing in ears you must get your ears checked which is audiometry at any of the ear centre.

Hello. The following are the causes for sensation of lump in throat: Reflux may cause this muscle to tighten up in order to prevent acid (and even non-acid mucus reflux) from the stomach from spilling up into the voicebox and mouth. Heartburn is NOT usually present, though treatment with anti-reflux medications is the same. Read more about reflux here. Increased stress may cause this muscle to constrict more strongly, exactly like the lump that forms in the throat when a person is trying to hold back from crying while watching a very sad movie. Indeed, we see quite a few patients with globus who are in the middle of a divorce, students in the middle of final exams, death in the family, workplace strife (hate the boss or co-worker), etc. Reflux and stress are by far the most common causes of globus. Rarely, cricopharyngeal muscle or esophageal pathology may also cause this sensation when the muscle scars, hypertrophies, or becomes chronically spastic or the lining of the esophagus develops a ring, shelf, or stricture. Even more rarely, a Zenker's Diverticulum or eosinophilic esophagitis may be present. A mucosal lesion may cause this sensation. Such lesions may be due to trauma (swallowing a small piece of bone) or ulcer ("canker" sore of the throat). In this particular scenario, the sensation is described as slightly off to one side and the size of a peanut. Lastly, a mass of some kind can cause this sensation. Such masses may include cancer, cysts, granulomas, large thyroid, etc. Keep in mind, however, that though people think their thyroid may be causing their symptoms of globus, only very RARELY is this the case. The only times when the thyroid may be a factor is when it gets so big to the point it becomes clearly obvious (think an orange-sized mass growing out from the neck), or if the thyroid encircles the esophagus which is also exceedingly rare. In rare cases, the globus sensation is nothing physical at all, but a type of neuropathy (link). Management: - Do stress-relieving exercises like Anulom-Vilum, Pranayam, etc. - Take healthy food. - Drink lots of water. - Think positive Take homoeopathic Rx- Natrum Mur. 200/ one dose daily for 7 days. Revert me back.

MBBS, MS - General Surgery, M.Ch - Plastic Surgery

Dear, the bone, occupying upper half of nose usually does not increase or decrease after 18 yrs. Rarely in some diseases, there can be increase, due to sinus or turbinates (air moisteners in nose) problem, which is better decided by a good ent surgeon. Make sure you really have increase of bone size recently or not before proceeding to them.

I have too much of Snoring problem. I didn't take treatment yet. What can I do now?

BAMS
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Hi, Please follow these tips to stop snoring: - Reduce your weight if you are obese. - Perform pranayama (breathing exercises) everyday. - Quit smoking which irritates the mucosal layer of the nose and throat and causes blockage and results in snoring. - Quit alcohol and sedatives which relax the throat muscles and results in snoring. - Sleep on sides instead on back. - Elevate the head by using a thick pillow which eases the breathing. - Clear the nose before going to bed. - Establish regular sleep pattern. - Keep the bedroom air moist by using humidifier; as dry air irritates the mucosal membrane in the nose and throat. - Perform throat exercises like repeating the vowels a, e, i, o, you loudly for 2-3 mins few times a day or keeping the tongue behind the teeth and moving it backwards - 3-4 times a day. - Anti snoring appliances can also be used.

How to Treat a Nosebleed

Fellowship In Head & Neck Oncosurger, MD - ENT , MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Gurgaon
How to Treat a Nosebleed

A nose bleed can take place due to a number of reasons, which usually all boil down to acute dryness of the nasal passages. The nosebleed and dryness can stem from sinus, allergic reactions, constant blowing of the nose, infections, and also during very harsh winter months when there is no lubrication in the nose. Nose bleed can also occur due to conditions, such as high blood pressure and when a foreign object gets stuck inside the nose.

Here are a few tips on treating nosebleeds:

  1. First step: The very first action when you experience a nose bleed should be to sit down. Once you are sitting, you should firmly pinch the spot that is soft. This lies just above the nostril. Do this for at least ten to fifteen minutes. The trick is to stay upright rather than lying down as this will bring down the blood pressure in the nasal blood vessels to stop further bleeding.
  2. Breathe: Breathe with your mouth as you lean forward to help in draining the blood into your nose, rather than out of it or towards the throat.
  3. Ice compress: Find a bag of frozen corn or peas in your freezer or an ice pack, and press this firmly against the nose to help in stemming the bleeding. As you are doing so, do not forget to cover the bridge of your nose with a towel so that it prevents you from catching a cold.
  4. Medication and side effects: If you are on any kind of anticoagulants that end up thinning the blood, then you may immediately want to see your doctor about a possible side effects and a change in the medication. This could also be an effect of haemophilia where the bleeding does not stop.
  5. Children: If a child who is under the age of two years suffers from such nosebleeds, then you will need to rush him or her to the doctor immediately as it could point at a more serious problem.
  6. Anaemia (learn more about Anaemia and how it affects the health): Nose bleeds could also suggest the presence of anaemia, so you may want to see your doctor about lab tests to determine and possibly rule out this cause. You can also start medication accordingly for this kind of an ailment.
  7. Nasal Packing: The doctor can carry out this procedure with the help of gauze that can seal the spot where the bleeding is happening.
  8. Cautery: This is a minor procedure that involves burning the blood vessel that is causing the persistent bleeding with a stick of silver nitrate. The stick will be inserted after local anaesthesia is administered to the patient.

You must see a doctor for severe and prolonged bleeding.
