Microdermabrasion vs Chemical Peel - Which Method Is Best For Your Skin?

Microdermabrasion vs Chemical Peel - Which Method Is Best For Your Skin?

Many factors come into play when evaluating the health of our biggest organ, the skin.  It is always exposed to external elements and hence sustains most potential damage. When choosing the proper treatments and products to enhance your skin, you should take into consideration such factors as skin pigmentation, acne, fine lines, wrinkles, skin sensitivities, oiliness or dryness. Exfoliation procedures can be physical or chemical. Which is best for you? The best way to decide on Microdermabrasion vs Chemical Peel is to review the benefits and expectations of each procedure.

Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is the most common physical method for removing the very superficial level of the skin. It is a manual exfoliation of the epidermis to remove dead skin cells, debris and impurities. Normally, an instrument, which combines suction and a wand made of diamond or small crystal particles, is used to remove these from the skin.

Microdermabrasion produces instant results, but may not be a good choice for inflamed, sensitive or rosacea type skin. In such cases look for resurfacing methods that utilize a dermafile, a manual exfoliation using diamond files. This technique reduces breakage of capillaries in someone with thin or sensitive skin. Microdermabrasion encourages collagen stimulation and a more rapid cell turnover in the skin.

Microdermabrasion wands consist of two main types:

  1. Crystal tip – A mixture of fine aluminum crystals are used to abrade the skin, as the cells and debris are blown away.
  2. Diamond tip  – Very fine diamond particles are used to remove any dead cells, oils, or debris, as these are also suctioned away.

What can I expect from Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion should leave the skin’s surface velvety smooth, soft, bright and glowing. This rejuvenation method is instant and in rare cases, a pinkness or sensitivity may occur a few hours directly after the procedure, lasting less than 24 hours.  Microdermabrasion is a workhorse of all rejuvenation procedures.  Although it is primarily used on the face, it can be used on any part of the body, from the neck to chest, to hands, etc.  Microdermabrasion is frequently done on the same day prior to other rejuvenation procedures for maximum benefits.

Chemical Peel
Chemical peels use topical applications of peeling solutions to rejuvenate the skin, address fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, tone and texture. They allow for cells that make collagen to function more effectively and remove any damage caused by the sun and other external forces that always act on our skin. Chemical peels are the preferred method in general for the treatment of the following;

  1. Counter fine lines and wrinkles
  2. Issues with skin pigmentation due to age or sun damage
  3. Acne and some acne scars
  4. General improvement in the skin’s texture, tightness and overall appearance

How do Chemical Peels work?
Whenever we take a step outside, or take a ride in a car our skin is exposed to harsh elements, pollutants, and harmful ultraviolet rays. With exposure to these elements, the skin is potentially damaged, leading to the aged appearance.

Chemical peels remove damaged cells; stimulate the growth of the new skin cells and collagen production. Different peels are used for different purposes. They can and should be customized for each patient’s particular skin types and problems. There are wonderful new combination peels that are safe, effective and have minimal down time. Anyone undergoing a chemical peel must stay out of the sun from 6 – 10 days and needless to say continue to use sun block.

Microdermabrasion vs Chemical Peel
It is always best to consult your physician when determining what will work best for your individual case and to help you accomplish your rejuvenation and/or skin-improvement goals.

Hello. Thank you for writing to us You seem to have androgenetic alopecia. It is characterized by progressive hair loss and hair thinning from the frontal scalp and vertex part of the scalp. There is also widening and deepening of the angles of anterior hair line as well as gradually receding anterior hair line. Minoxidil and finasteride are approved remedies for this type of hair loss. Treatment is long term and just preventive i.e the goal of treatment is to arrest or slow down further progression & therefore early the therapy is initiated, better the prognosis. Therefore naturally if you discontinue minoxidil you stand a chance to lose remaining hairs as well. I suggest you to start with topical minoxidil application. It is also advisable to add finasteride tablet along with topical minoxidil application, for maximal benefit. Kindly visit a dermatologist in your vicinity for more information regarding treatment for androgenetic alopecia and for the needful. Regards.

I am suffering from brain fog since a long time. I have tried meditation but it helps only for a few minutes to hours. It starts at around 9-10 am, gradually increases and reaches its peak between 1 and 3. The fog starts to fade at around 5 pm. During this time time when brain fog attacks I can't concentrate or focus. I find as if I have a headband which is affecting my thought process. I have become disinterested in everything. I have lost sense of urgency. I am demotivated as I struggle to make it through the day. I know I am operating below part but don't know how to beat this. I am also suffering from fatigue, I get tired easily and am underweight even at the age of 40.

Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. Have you been under some medications off late? Again, have you consulted a neuro physician anytime, in this regard? If not, I would advise that its high time you consult one without any further delay. Simultaneously, have a healthy and balanced diet preferably Mediterranean and have an active lifestyle. Stay well hydrated, exercise daily (walking being the safest) for at least 30 minutes, de-stress and relax on a daily basis. Its important to stay psychosocially active too. I can advise suitable natural medicines in particular, that can help improve clinical outcomes, once you connect with all details including the diagnostics etc all. Hope this helps. Do take care, and all the very best. Sincerely

Hi, I would like to enlighten you about pimples [acne] in brief. What is acne? acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilo sebaceous follicles [i. E. Hair with oil producing glands attached to hair] characterized by comedones (blackheads and whiteheads), papules, pustules, nodules and ultimately leading to scars. Who gets acne? close to 100% of people between the ages of twelve and seventeen have at least an occasional whitehead, blackhead or pimple regardless of race or ethnicity. Acne starts between the ages of ten and fifteen years of age and usually lasts till twenty years of age; however, acne can persist into the late twenties or thirties or even beyond. Some people get acne for the first time as adults and this is known as adult acne. What are the causes of acne? bacteria bacteria that normally live on the skin play a role in acne development. The bacteria are known as propionibacterium acnes (p. Acnes). The bacteria content can increase in people whose faces are not clean. Hormones during the teen years increased levels of sex hormones cause the oil glands of the skin to produce increased amount of oil. These excess skin oils tend to bind with cellular debris causing a blockage and producing a fertile environment for the bacteria to grow. The bacteria cause inflammation, pus, swelling and redness. In adult acne, excessive hormones produced due to polycystic ovaries and other hormonal imbalances cause excess oil production and inflammation, which lead to acne. What are the factors that precipitate or aggravate acne? stress- stress is frequently implicated in aggravation of acne while acne itself induces stress. Sweat- sweating in a hot and humid environment causes deterioration in 15% of acne patients. Menstruation- pre menstrual flare of acne occurs in 70% of female acne patients. Friction and pressure- friction and pressure from helmets, backpacks and tight collars can induce blackheads and papules. Pressure from face massages or facials can aggravate acne. Pregnancy- pregnancy has an unpredictable effect on acne. Pre-existing acne may aggravate or remit during pregnancy. Diet- high glycemic load foods (sugar loaded and starchy foods), oily foods may aggravate acne. Drugs- oral contraceptives, anti tuberculosis medication, oral steroids, anti depressants may aggravate acne. Treatment: treatment for acne needs to be individualized as per the type of acne and type of your skin. For comedones, we recommend comedone extraction procedure. For red papules, we recommend topical creams, chemical peels and oral antibiotics as per severity. For nodules [big swelling], intralesional steroid injections works fastest and are safe. For scars, there are various procedures like dermaroller[microneedling], subscision, deep chemical peels and lasers. Total duration of treatment for acne varies from 2 to 4 months for complete cure and for acne scars varies from 8 to 12 months. I recommend you to consult qualified dermatologist to prescribe you correct treatment that suits you the best after examining your skin. You can send your pics and consult online too in case you are not able to see the doctor personally. Hope you can use the above information for your benefit. All the best.

How can I check my hair fall? Apart from medicines suggest me what food I should include in my daily diet to check it?

How can I check my hair fall? Apart from medicines suggest me what food I should include in my daily diet to check it?
Give your hair the right amount of vitamins. Since hair is made of proteins, eat a balanced diet rich in lean protein, whole grains, fruits and vegetables. A healthy diet will ensure hair that looks and feels better. • Make sure you get plenty of vitamin C. This vitamin strengthens hair. In addition, iron helps transport oxygen to blood vessels, zinc grows and repairs tissue, and omega-3 fatty acids grow healthy hair. • Give your hair some time to show new brilliance. What you eat will not have an immediate difference on the hair you already have, but it will help with hair that is newly growing.

Dear lybrate-user, Are you screaming or kicking or walking or waking up during the nightmares? If not, they are just dreams. Does not need any major treatment. In shift workers, the circadian rhythm gets disturbed. The sleep wake cycle is also disturbed. So you may be waking up during dream stage of sleep. That is why, you remember the dream and worry about them. Try and find a day shift job. Or try to go to bed at the same time on all days whether week day or week end. Sleep during the day, in a dark room or eyes covered by a cloth. If it bothers your day time activities, please consult a psychiatrist. She/he may prescribe a tablet called Melatonin, a circadian rhythm hormone.

Mere chehre par pimples jyada ho gaye he or khdde bi pade he. Ye mitane ka koi idea.

BHMS
Homeopath,
Mere chehre par pimples jyada ho gaye he or khdde bi pade he. Ye mitane ka koi idea.
Dear lybrate user, pimples/ acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory skin disease which develops due to blocking of the hair follicles in skin. These blockages occur due to 4 abnormal processes: 1) excess sebum production due to androgens 2) excessive deposition of the protein keratin leading to comedone formation 3) infection of propionibacterium acnes (p. Acnes) bacteria on the hair follicles 4) local release of pro-inflammatory chemicals in the skin. In order to stop the formation of pimples the aforesaid four causes should be terminated. Now the bitter truth is neither can you stop the overproduction of androgen or keratin protein nor can you stop the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals because all these processes takes place internally in your skin. However you can stop the accumulation of p. Acnes bacteria on your skin by preventing your skin from getting oily. Always keep a handkerchief with you whenever you go outside. You should wipe off the slightest amount of sweat from your face as soon as you perspire on entering your room from outside wash your face with an oil-free, non-moisturizing face wash. Take a low carbohydrate diet. Do some exercise daily. Drink a lots of water to avoid constipation. Avoid pricking the pimples or popping the sebum as it may lead to black pigmentation & permanent scar formation. You can also take homoeopathic calcarea phos 200, 5 drops, thrice daily, in empty stomach also you can apply homoeopathic mother tincture berberis aquifolium q on the dark spots on your skin which are produced after the resolution of the pimples.

Diabetes - Types and Tips to Control Your Blood Sugar Level

MBBS, MD - General Medicine
General Physician, Hyderabad
Diabetes - Types and Tips to Control Your Blood Sugar Level

Diabetes might not be the end of the road for you. While it is a chronic disorder, there are a number of steps you can take to minimize its effects. Before that you should know what diabetes is and its various types.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the sugar in your blood is not metabolized by the body. This leads to a situation wherein sugar accumulates in your blood; this condition is known as high blood sugar. Now this can happen in two ways:

  1. Type 1 Diabetes: In this type, the beta cells of the pancreas that produce insulin (hormone that metabolizes sugar) are destroyed by the immune system of the body. This leads to reduction in insulin levels, causing blood sugar to shoot up.

  2. Type 2 Diabetes: Type 2 diabetes is a condition wherein the body cannot effectively utilize the insulin to metabolize sugar. This again leads to accumulation of sugar in the blood.

Apart from these two types, there is a third type that is known as ‘gestational diabetes’. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy wherein the body produces hormones that inhibit insulin.

Now that you know the various types of diabetes, it is time to focus on the preventive measures. The various tips for high blood sugar level are:

  1. Steer Clear of Sugar: Think of sugar as your enemy, as it is something that you have to stay away from. Sugar will only add to the high blood sugar content that you are already diagnosed with.

  2. Welcome whole grains with open arms: Refined grains are a big no; that means no more of those delicious white bread sandwiches. Instead, opt for whole grains such as brown bread, brown rice and oats. Refined grains come under simple carbohydrates that cause your blood sugar levels to shoot up.

  3. Avoid over consumption of fruits: While fruits are healthy, they do contain fructose which is again, a form of sugar. So, yes eat them but limit their consumption to one serving a day.

  4. High time you realize nothing substitutes exercise: Regular exercise can help you burn calories and also keep your blood sugar levels low. It allows you to maintain healthy weight levels and improves your overall wellbeing.

  5. Take no stress: Stress has been shown to increase blood sugar, so if you are feeling stressed and can’t seem to get out of with, take steps to deal with it. Practice relaxation techniques such as meditation that can help you reduce stress and improve focus. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.
