What are good and bad cholesterols?

MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS
Endocrinologist,
What are good and bad cholesterols?
Cholesterol level should be measured at least once every five years in everyone over age 20. The screening test that is usually performed is a blood test called a lipid profile. Experts recommend that men ages 35 and older and women ages 45 and older be more frequently screened for lipid disorders. The lipoprotein profile includes: Total cholesetrol LDL (low-density lipoprotein CHOLESETROL also called "bad"CHOLESTETROL HDL (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also called "good" cholesterol) TRIGLYCERIDES (fats carried in the BLOOD from the food we eat. Excess calories, alcohol, or sugar in the body are converted into TRIGLYCERIDES and stored in fat cells throughout the body.)

Don't discontinue, go on with same medicine, with the same dose & try to change your diet, take fat free, salt restricted, high fiber diet, check your lipid profile every month, when your cholesterol & triglyceride will come down, then reduce the dose in consultation with a cardiologist. Last but not the least, regular exercise is essential.

Thanks for the query. At this age having high blood pressure needs to be taken seriously. It's good that you have started to think of taking care of your health. There’s no overnight fix when it comes to healthy weight loss, but you can adjust your lifestyle to promote quick, natural weight loss for the benefit of your health and your appearance. Successful, long-term weight management needs to focus on more than the food you eat and the pounds you lose. It needs to focus on your overall health. Reshape your body and your lifestyle by adopting healthy habits and breaking unhealthy ones. Replace all processed foods in your diet with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean meats, eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds and seafood. Focus on the variety of whole, unprocessed foods you can eat instead of dwelling on the junk food you eliminated from your diet. Eat smaller portions at every meal and avoid going back for seconds. Take a smaller scoop of rice,  half of a piece of chicken instead of a whole piece and one less egg in your morning omelet, for example. Make time for breakfast every morning. Eating breakfast helps prevent overeating and is a habit of people who successfully lose weight. Pack to-go meals instead of eating convenience foods when you’re not home. Store foods like chopped fruits and vegetables or cooked grains, legumes, eggs and meats in your refrigerator so you always have something to grab when you’re in a rush. Buy fresh vegetables and fruits from the grocery store if you forget to bring healthful food from home. When you can’t avoid dining at a restaurant, opt for a salad as a starter, and always ask for the dressing on the side. Clear soups, lean meats, seafood and grain-based dishes like roti, whole grain bread are other good choices. Exercise for 30 to 60 minutes at least three times per week to build muscle and burn more calories. Pilates, strength training, aerobics, swimming, dancing and yoga or a sport like football are ideal choices. If you’re new to exercising, start with brisk walking and jogging. Adopt physically demanding hobbies like bicycling, hiking, jogging, power walking to promote faster weight loss. If you don’t have time for new hobbies, increase your physical activity with things like walking the dog, playing with the kids or jogging instead of driving to a nearby store or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Weigh yourself weekly and record your weight. Adjust your diet and physical activity according to the progress you’re making.

Exercise and the Heart
Getting regular exercise is very important to your heart health, whether you are currently healthy, or already have a heart condition. Fortunately, getting "enough" exercise, and getting it safely, can be relatively easy to do for most people. These articles will tell you what you need to know about getting the right amount of exercise for your heart.
Why Is Exercise So Beneficial?
Regular exercise does a lot more than merely strengthen the heart.
Regular exercise can improve the function of your musculoskeletal system, your cardiovascular system, your respiratory system, your metabolism, and even your brain. And as a result, exercise can help you live longer, remain vigorous well into your old age, and to be more productive.
Read about the benefits of exercise.
Heart Healthy Exercise Guidelines
Reaping the rewards of regular exercise does not require you to completely change your lifestyle, or neglect your work or your family. In fact, you can gain most of the benefits of exercise with relatively small changes in your daily routine.
Read about the simple guidelines for heart-healthy exercise.
How Can I Begin An Exercise Program?

The hardest part about regular exercise is beginning it. It is easy to become bored if you start too slowly, or to become injured if you start too quickly. Fortunately, About.com's Exercise Guide has some very helpful information that will help you begin your exercise in a way that is safe and helps to maintains your interest.
Read about beginning an exercise program.
What About Exercise After A Heart Attack?
Exercise is not only okay after a heart attack, it is necessary. Studies show that heart attack survivors who participate in regular exercise have a significantly lower risk of mortality, and a lower risk of recurrent heart attacks.
Read about exercise, and other forms of cardiac rehabilitation, after a heart attack.
After a heart attack, it is natural to wonder when it is safe to resume sexual activity (which turns out to be a favorite form of "exercise" for many). Fortunately, the answer is usually pretty straightforward.

Sudden death in apparently healthy young athletes is a rare but tragic event. Most of these sudden deaths are due to underlying heart conditions that were undiagnosed prior to the fatal event. For this reason, some experts have advocated screening young people for heart disease before they participate in athletic activities. But because these heart conditions are relatively uncommon, and because screening can be expensive, how and when to do such screening has been a controversial question.
Exercise Recommendations For Specific Cardiac Conditions
If you have heart disease, regular exercise is as important -- and likely more important -- than it is for a person without heart disease. However, you may need to pay attention to guidelines designed for your specific type of cardiac condition.

M. sc Psychology, BHMS

What is your wt? do you have any respiratory asthma type of c/os. If situationally like sudden shocking news, sound or tension about anything, physical strain are the causative factors, then need not to worry, which is common in such conditions. But if without any reason, there is a sudden onset of rise in heartbeat, better to get checked by a gen. Physician r cardiologist, precautionarily.
