Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. Memory and mind power depends mainly on three aspects. Understanding, storage and recollection. To understand what you are studying, you must be able to be attentive or concentrate. Concentration is possible when you are interested in that subject. Creative way of learning can help you concentrate and understand easily. When you are able to understand and concentrate, it is stored within your brain. If you read more and more it will be store in long term memory. Third part is retrieval. Whenever you want to retrive what you learned and stored, your brain gets the request, searches the database and retrieves the information for you. The retrieval may prove to be difficult if you are anxious, stressed, worried or tired physically or mentally. Retrieval is more easy when you are relaxed and healthy. Brain needs nutrients to keep itself sharp. Fruits, vegetables and dry fruits provide much needed nutrients for your brain. Include at least one fruit in your daily diet. Physical exercises, entertainment, hobbies, relaxation, memory games like sudoku etc help keep your memory sharp and active. You may consult a psychologist online or in person for advice, counseling and therapy. Take care.

Alcohol dependence involves intense craving or desire to drink alcohol. People drink for pleasure or rationalize it on external factors like family problems, work tension, etc. They drink continuously, i.e. Almost daily or even weekly once or twice with withdrawal symptoms, tolerance, bodily damage, etc. They need to be brought for de addiction which involves. On a longer run can also produce anxiety and negative thoughts, like in your case. You need to consult a psychiatrist and go for 3 steps of de addiction. 1st is detoxification, when alcohol is stopped and the withdrawal is made smooth with minimal discomfort, 2 nd is maintenance and further deaddiction when the physical problems and psychological state of the individual is maintained and anti-craving drugs started 3 rd rehabilitation, when relapse prevention is the goal, while maintaining deaddiction. All the best.

Hello I am 23 Year old male. I used to to chew gutkha but now I want to quit it. I used to chew 20 to 30 packets a day but from last 2 days I only used 2 to 3 packets in a whole day. I do not want to chew that too but one of my friend told me that leaving completely will do side effect is this right? And the other question is that I have some white cuts or only marks on both side in my mouth. But do not have any type of pain or any difficulty in talking or eating. Do I need to worry about that or is it normal? Thank you waiting for your response.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Guwahati
Gutka is a substance of abuse. It is a dry preparation, that consist of betel leaf, areca nut, tobacco, catechu (extract of the acacia catechu tree) & slaked lime, with sweet or savory flavorings. Due to its stimulant activity, gutka is used as a recreational drug. As it is a harmful product & do not have any beneficial effect on the body, you better quit it as early as possible. Now-a-days de-addiction treatments are available for quitting all substances of abuse including gutka. Such treatment includes detoxification & rehabilitation program. Consult a psychiatrist & start your treatment at the earliest. With treatment you can quit the gutka immediately & you will not require the gradual reduction of the quantity of gutka, as advised by your friend. Medical detoxification is the first stage of de addiction treatment, when the addicted person is treated with medicines. The withdrawal symptoms which occur on sudden stopping of an addictive substance are managed through detox treatment. Medical detoxification systematically and safely will withdraw you from the gutka. The next phase is the Rehabilitation program which includes counseling sessions & other behavioral therapies. These sessions have important role in the de addiction process. Counseling sessions will help to enhance your motivation skills to stay sober, build skills to resist gutka use, replace gutka-using activities with constructive and rewarding non gutka-using activities, and improve problem-solving abilities. Behavioral therapy will work on interpersonal relationships and your ability to function effectively in the family and community. Detoxification is usually completed within 7-10 days & can be done both on out patient basis & as in patient. Rehabilitation program usually ranges between 30-90 days. Along with, mentally prepare yourself to stay away from gutka. Following measures will help you to prepare yourself mentally against the substance: oEducate yourself adequately regarding gutka & its ill effects. Acquire the required information by reading books, going through internet or talking to a professional trained in de addiction. OKeep reminding yourself of the benefits you will achieve after quitting gutka: After quitting you will have reduced risk of the many diseases caused by gutka including oral cancer and a variety of other medical conditions like heart attack, respiratory, cardiac depression, hypertension, reproductive health dysfunction etc. Your teeth will be saved from the unpleasant stains. Your mouth will be saved from the bad odor caused by gutka. Any sores or ulcers in your mouth will heal well. You can focus more on your relationships. Taking gutka might have affected your relations if your close ones were against it, or because you were so preoccupied with the substance, your relations suffered. You can participate actively in social gatherings as you will not have to stay away to hide your habit nor have to come out frequently to chew gutka. You will save the money you were wasting on gutka & use them for better purposes. OImagine & create a picture of a beautiful future in your mind of a life without gutka. Imagine how much you will benefit in your new life. In between your beautiful imaginary picture also imagine that you started to take gutka again. Then imagine how one by one the beautiful picture will shatter. Once you become aware of the consequences of relapse, you will also develop fear of relapsing. You will then stay more cautious not to start it again. OCount the first day of your quitting as day of a new start & from that day, live one day at a time. It is helpful if you can relate this day to some important events in your life like your birthday or birthday of someone close, anniversary, day of some achievements etc. On the morning of the second day, tell yourself that you are starting the second day of your substance free life & by night time thank yourself that you stayed substance free whole day & encourage yourself to stay gutka free in coming days too. Celebrate your victory of staying sober on completing 1 week, 2 weeks, then 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, and on completing one year celebrate the first birthday of your sobriety. This will encourage you to stay sober further. OAvoid triggering factors that may tempt you to take gutka. For example if the triggering factor was internal say some stress for which you got inclined to abusing substance, then work on the stress to remove it or take help of a counselor to overcome the stress. If the triggering was external, like some friends persuaded initially & you could not say no, in some specific event or situation you started taking gutka etc, then stay away from those situation. OImmediately after quitting, craving will be intense. But gradually with time it will reduce. So the initial days you have to be very careful. Keep yourself busy & diverted. OThrow away all gutka you have with you. Having them within reach may increase your temptation. You can use alternatives like lozenges or chewing gum. OStart new healthy habits & opt for a healthy lifestyle. OEat healthy diet. OJoin a support group comprising of people who came out of addiction & had undergone the same situation as you. You will get a platform to discuss your queries & together can motivate each other to stay sober & also help others to overcome addiction. Start your effort to quit gutka at the earliest. All the best. Regarding the white marks on your mouth, get yourself examined by a doctor. He will advice you the necessary investigations & give treatment if required.

5 Ways to Fight Depression If you feel depressed, it's best to do something about it — depression doesn't just go away on its own. In addition to getting help from a doctor or therapist, here are 5 things you can do to feel better. 1.Exercise. Take a 15- to 30-minute brisk walk every day — or dance, jog, or bike if you prefer. People who are depressed may not feel much like being active. In addition to getting aerobic exercise, some yoga poses can help relieve feelings of depression. Two other aspects of yoga — breathing exercises and meditation — can also help people with depression feel better. 2.Nurture yourself with good nutrition. Depression can affect appetite. One person may not feel like eating at all, but another might overeat. Proper nutrition can influence a person's mood and energy. So eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and get regular meals (even if you don't feel hungry, try to eat something light, like a piece of fruit, to keep you going). 3.Identify troubles, but don't dwell on them. Try to identify any situations that have contributed to your depression. When you know what's got you feeling blue and why, talk about it with a caring friend. Talking is a way to release the feelings and to receive some understanding. 4. Express yourself. With depression, a person's creativity and sense of fun may seem blocked. Exercise your imagination (painting, drawing, doodling, sewing, writing, dancing, composing music, etc.) and you not only get those creative juices flowing, you also loosen up some positive emotions. Take time to play with a friend or a pet, or do something fun for yourself. Find something to laugh about — a funny movie, perhaps. Laughter helps lighten your mood. 5. Try to notice good things. Depression affects a person's thoughts, making everything seem dismal, negative, and hopeless. If depression has you noticing only the negative, make an effort to notice the good things in life. Try to notice one thing, then try to think of one more. Consider your strengths, gifts, or blessings. Most of all, don't forget to be patient with yourself. Depression takes time to heal. If you are happy with these answers please click on "useful” link so that I can know my efforts are not wasted. If you want more clarifications or prescription for medicines consult me on this site to ask me directly and not in open questions session It's not easy to say exactly what causes depression and anxiety – it's different for everyone. Sometimes a difficult time in you or your mates' life can set off depression or anxiety, sometimes it's caused by a combination of things that has built up over time and sometimes, there's just no obvious cause at all.

7 Ways to Remember Anything Research-based strategies to boost your memory and keep it strong 7 Strategies for Remembering 1.Become interested in what you're learning. We're all better remembering what interests us. Few people, for example, have a difficult time remembering the names of people they find attractive. If you're not intrinsically interested in what you're learning or trying to remember, you must find a way to become so. 2.Find a way to leverage your visual memory. You'll be surprised by how much more this will enable you to remember. For example, imagine you're at a party and are introduced to five people in quick succession. How can you quickly memorize their names? Pick out a single defining visual characteristic of each person and connect it to a visual representation of their name, preferably through an action of some kind. Remember: Memory is predominantly visual. 3.Create a mental memory tree. If you're trying to memorize a large number of facts, find a way to relate them in your mind visually with a memory tree. Construct big branches first, then leaves. Branches and leaves should carry labels that are personally meaningful to you in some way, and the organization of the facts ("leaves") should be logical. 4.Associate what you're trying to learn with what you already know. It seems the more mental connections we have to a piece of information, the more successful we'll be in remembering it. This is why using mnemonics. Write out the items to be memorized over and over and over. 5.When reading for retention, summarize each paragraph in the margin. This requires you to think about what you're reading, recycle it, and teach it to yourself again. Even take the concepts you're learning and reason forward with them; apply them to imagined novel situations, which creates more neural connections to reinforce the memory. 6.Do most of your studying in the afternoon. Though you may identify yourself as a "morning person" or "evening person" at least one Study. Suggests your ability to memorize isn't influenced as much by what time of day you perceive yourself to be most alert but by the time of day you actually study—afternoon appearing to be the best. 7.Get adequate sleep to consolidate and retain memories. Not just at night after you've studied but the day, you study as well. Far better to do this than to stay up cramming all night for an exam. All fruits are good increasing vitamins in the body.

Psychologist,
You might be going through some stress in your life because of which your thoughts are going here n there. Counselling helps to contain the mind as well as learn effective ways to deal with the stresses. Get your eyesight checked for any power. Be friends with students who are focused in their studies. You will need to study smarter rather than study harder. Are you enjoying what you are studying or its not of your choice? if it's not of your choice then look for positive meaning in learning that subject. Eg. For geography n history: I will need this knowledge when I grow up and visit new places. This will help you to keep your interest going in that subject. And the last thing is not to compare your results with other people. Each person is unique and has his own strengths and limitations. You discover yours and sharpen your weaknesses. Remember that your current results don't mean that you will never do well. Some people do well only when they are in college, doctorate or at work.

Dear Lybrate user, Anger and aggression are emotions. Anger comes when you become irritated. Irritation happens when you don't like something, or when something is repeated. As anger is an emotion, it should be vent out. You should be able to throw anger out instead of controlling it. But more perfect will be, know the frustrating situations and stop being emotional. If practiced properly, you will not get irritated at those circumstances at all. Those techniques are much easier to understand. Take care.

I have memory problem I quickly forgot most of thing that I study. I face lots of problem in exam time please solve my problem as soon as possible.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
There can be only one possibility that you are suffering from this lack of memory i.e. you are under some form of stress. You need to meet with a counselor and deal with the stress for memory to happily return. Here are some things you can do to get back your concentration and memory: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid junk food.
