Apply an ice pack to the painful area of your head. Try placing it on your forehead, temples, or the back of your neck. Take a warm bath or shower; take a nap; or take a walk. Ask someone to rub your neck and back, or treat yourself to a massage. Apply gentle, steady rotating pressure to the painful area of your head with your index finger and/or thumb. Maintain pressure for seven to 15 seconds, then release. Repeat as needed. Rest, sit, or lie quietly in a low-lit room. Close your eyes and try to release the tension in your back, neck, and shoulders. Get your blood pressure checked, cbc done and revert.

Depression: Why is this SILENT KILLER taking our YOUTH away?

M.D Psychiatry , MBBS
Psychiatrist, Gurgaon
Depression: Why is this SILENT KILLER taking our YOUTH away?

Recently most of us were shaken by the death of the well-known television actress, Pratyusha Banerjee. Her sudden death has brought to light the very common yet under-addressed problem - Depression -  that a number of youths are living with.

Most mental and emotional health issues are inconspicuous in nature and, therefore, cause more harm than they otherwise should, most people still live with a number of symptoms of depression without even realizing it or do little to address it. When the depressive symptoms last for more than 2 weeks and affect the individual's personal, social or occupational life, it is known as clinical depression or major depression. There is often a delay in opting for the treatment because of the social taboo associated with depression.

Although cases of depression can vary from an individual to the other, there are signs that one can look out for, to identify a depressed person:

- Low mood most of the time of day along with frequent crying spells

- Feeling of unworthiness and low self-respect are very common in a depressed person. Due to these feelings, the affected person may become very critical and disapproving about himself or herself.

- Lack of enjoyment and loss of interest in a depressed person makes them no longer derive pleasure from things that once gave him or her happiness.

- Exhaustion and insomnia are signs that one should look out for in a depressed individual. These are usually due to changes in sleep patterns, from sleeping a lot because of feelings of constant fatigue or due to instances of wakefulness.

- From indulging in comfort eating to losing the will to eat, predominantly loss of appetite characterizes a depressed person.

- Difficulty in recalling details and tendency to over generalize as also problem-solving issues can point to the presence of depression

- Unexplained bodily pains and aches are another characteristics of the condition.

What are the different types of depression?

Regarding the different forms of this mental health issue, it comes in several forms along with their distinct symptoms, effects, and causes. These are:

- Major depression

- Dysthymia

- Recurrent depressive disorder

- Seasonal affective disorder

- Bipolar disorder

How can it affect your life?

More than 90% people who commit suicide suffer from some form of psychiatric illness and depression is the most common reason. The despair that usually accompanies depression makes the thought of taking one's life as the only means available to escape the pain. In addition to suicidal thoughts, it can also affect one's functioning in day to day life if help is not sought in time.

Depression is as curable as any other illness. Both medical management and psychotherapy are helpful in treatment. Type of treatment depends on patient's condition, the severity of illness as well as availability.

Medicine is always side effects. One problem solved other problems comes to you. So better to know and practice stress management techniques. Depressive thoughts come because of excessive stress. Stress is the cause of excessive thoughts. So better to control your thoughts. If you think seriously in one aspect it may cause stress. If you any internal problems. It is better to share with your friends and family members. Then the severity of stress reduced. Meanwhile you have to do yourself for satisfied thoughts. Spend most of the time with friends. After work visit your friends homes. Walk evening time. Practice yoga and meditation. Visit temple's. Movies, some new places, eat and enjoy variety of different food items. Do not sit alone. Do not think it is always not good to you. Change yourself. Think like a matured person and behave like a gentleman. Do not go to any other medicine. Ok best of luck.

Dear Lybrate user. I can understand. Bipolar disorder, with its extreme mood swings from depression to mania, used to be called manic depressive disorder. Bipolar disorder is very serious and can cause risky behavior, even suicidal tendencies, and can be treated with therapy and medication. Please work with your psychiatrist for a cure. Take care.

please remember it is very easy to get addicted but very difficult to quit. You need to meditate and talk to your support groups and find what" you" really are and what you would like to" become. Also remember, for long term addictions it is common to relapse. It is like you are repeating the same mistake and wished if only you could help it! the point is to accept and forgive yourself and be stronger next time and make a commitment to yourself first.

If you lose something then it means you lost it and it was not yours. And if something is with you then it is yours. Why feel depressed just think that if god have taken your mobile from you then he will give you a better option. What it will no body knows. But just think every thing will be fine. Keep yourself calm by doing some breathing exercise.

I have heard that dark chocolate is good for depression. Will I get same benefit if I take cocoa powder. Thanks.
Dark chocolate along will not help in depression. Try following things to manage stress and over come depression. What you are feeling might be due to conic stress, result of our fast life style. You could also explain this as feeling burnout. To begin with doing guided progressive muscular relaxation before sleeping will help you relax. I would also suggest you to take a multiple small break to take 3 nice and deep breath while keeping your eyes closed. You could do this while sitting or standing or while even walking or climbing stairs (keep your eyes open in that case). When you take a nice and deep break there is actual physiological change in your body. Thus will help you to activate parasympathetic nervous system which promotes relaxation and helps you calm down and think more clearly. This will also actually improve your performance in your work. Along with this exercise is one of the best way to relive stress and stay fit. Engage in any kind of physical activity at least 4 times a week. This also helps in stress reduction. Along with this some relaxation exercises as well as engaging in joyful activities such as music, singing, dancing, reading, being in nature, gardening, talking with friends or anything which you enjoy will help reducing stress and rejuvenation of your mind and body. Have good routine for sleep and eating. Lot of research has now proven that sugar is very harmful for our health. Reduce sugar and refined white floor in your diet as much as you could. Along with this also increase consumption of raw vegetables in the form of salad in both the meals of your day. If you need help in exploring what works best for you and make this into your life style do let me know. As a trained wellness coach I could help you tailored your own holistic wellness program. Hope this helps wishing you very best.

Dear Lybrate user, At your age, Memory problems like amnesia are not common. Many young people are having problems with memory. These problems are either they are too busy or due to anxiety and stress. Busy people use organizers or employ a personal assistant because they can't remember every task. You need to understand this. If you still say, you are having memory problems, we need to check your memory using memory test. If you want more of my help in this regard, please contact me. Take care.

There are limitations in treatment of trichotillomania. However some treatment options have helped many people reduce their hair pulling or stop entirely.--------------------------- Habit reversal training is the primary psychotherapy for trichotillomania. This type of therapy helps you learn how to recognize situations where you're likely to pull hair and how to substitute other behaviors instead. For example, you might clench your fists for a period to" freeze" the urge, or redirect your hand from your hair to your ear. Sometimes elements of other therapies may be blended with habit reversal training, including: •Cognitive therapy. This therapy can help you challenge and examine distorted beliefs you may have in relation to hair pulling. •Acceptance and commitment therapy. This therapy can help you learn to accept your hair-pulling urges without acting on them •Homoeopathic treatment Trichotillomania being a behavioural disorder can be fully treated with homoeopathic medicines but for that a complete case taking is required regarding your problem since childhood as although all patients suffering from Trichotillomania, reason is behavioural problems but no two people will have the same history of complaints and to isolate everyone, a thorough study of history of complaints, nature of patient, environmental factors, will come into play while taking history of your problem.

You must be able to distinguish between mental disease and mental disorder. Your problem is a mental disorder. Not a mental disease. Therefore no medicines are required. Mental disorder can be successfully treated with the help of awareness, meditation, psychotherapy techniques, life style changes etc. I think two or three counseling sessions and psycho therapy techniques should solve your problem. Let me know if you are willing to undergo counseling sessions and tailor made psycho therapy through mobile. Take care.

Well she might be having apprehensive anxiety about doing well in the exam. Excessive anxiety leads to depression. Depression caused by stress or exogenous depression tend to be worse in the evening. Please start talking to her, tell you love her and would continue to love her irrespective of the result. Reinforce the hardworking she has been doing and that is what is on her control. Exams are merely a way to test your knowledge and is not the ultimate. You can see a counsellor if necessary.
