General Physician,
Best age to stop smoking is before 40 ,In fact do not start all Only by using strong will power and avoiding all situations where you feel like smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking or using drugs avoiding friends who smoke and diverting mind by reading or chewing a gum, like NICORETTE and taking a walk when you crave for a smoke can all help. You can chew Nicorette gum which is nicotine replacement. There are medicines available. Which can be prescribed if asked personally Cigarette smoking is a leading preventable cause of mortality. It kills more than 60 lakh people worldwide every year. More than 50% of regular smokers would invariably die from tobacco-related illnesses which includes heart attack, cancer or asthmatic lung diseases. Best age to stop smoking is before 40 Only strong will power, determination, attending AA meetings and diverting mind when tempted will help you stop alcohol or may need professional help from a psychiatrist or de addiction centre. Try to do meditation and yoga. Read good books and listen to music and if you are believer attend Bhajans Alcohol causes 7 types of cancer, including breast, mouth and bowel cancers. When you drink alcohol, cancer-causing chemicals are formed. Alcohol also affects hormone levels and makes cells even more likely to be damaged by smoking. The less alcohol you drink, the lower the risk of cancer. No type of alcohol is better or worse than another, it is the alcohol itself that leads to the damage, regardless of whether it is in wine, beer or spirits. And drinking and smoking together are even worse for you. Not everyone who drinks alcohol will develop cancer. But on the whole, scientists have found that some cancers are more common in people who drink more alcohol than others. Every year, alcohol causes 4% of cancers .Tips to cut down on alcohol. There are lots of simple ways to cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink. It can help to work out if there are particular times or situations when you tend to have a drink, whether that’s a bad day at work or a weekly pub quiz tradition, and plan what you’ll say and do differently next time. Have more alcohol-free days a week. For liver health it’s best to have at least 2 days off alcohol in a row each week. Try agreeing on certain days with your partner or a friend and help each other and stick to it. If you are planning to drink alcohol, decide on a limit in advance and make sure you don’t go over it. Swap every other alcoholic drink for a soft one – starting with your first drink. Try shandy instead of a pint of beer, or swap some wine for soda and have a spritzer. Don’t stock up on beer, wine or spirits at home. Finish one drink before pouring another, because topping up drinks makes it harder to keep track of how much you’ve had and when you planned to stop. Avoid buying drinks in rounds, that way you don’t have to keep pace with anyone. Tell a friend or partner that you’re cutting down on alcohol, they can support you – or even join you.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry

When you do not understand and enjoy what you study, you get bored of it and hence feel sleepy. Try to learn things in a simplified way. Divide your study in related parts, correlate whenever you study with what you studies earlier. If you still face concentration problems consult me for medicines. That will help you good luck.

It is possible that you are undergoing a spurt in the growth hormone and male sex hormone. The former will make you feel a lot of exhaustion and sleepiness. You are going through the final phase of adolescence and this sleepiness you talk about are expected. During this time there will be a spurt in the production of the male sex hormone, testosterone, which has a duration of two years. Due to this chemical alone there are three identified features that present itself over which you will have poor control: you will be sexually active, aggressive and rebellious, and you will have acne and pimple problems. Then if you have unresolved childhood issues, they will compound the situation and fuel uncontrolled behavior. Please remember that you may not be aware of all this. Exercise will channelize a lot of your energy and help you to deal with the situation better. Meditation will also help. Make sure you get good sleep, a minimum of 8 hours and do not exceed 9 hours. Talk to a counselor, if there are unresolved childhood issues. For concentration do some of these recommendations very faithfully: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem-solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning, at least, five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There is a new exercise called Super Brain Yoga, which is done by holding the right earlobe with your left thumb and index finger, and the left earlobe with your right hand’s thumb and index finger. In this position, you must squat down and rise up and do this for five minutes every day. There is some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. The following foods do help too: Blueberries, walnuts, turmeric, Spinach, tomatoes, broccoli, acorn squash, green tea, oily fish, boiled egg, turkey, apples, oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, pumpkin seeds, avocado, cinnamon, thyme, sunflower seeds, and red wine. Avoid sugar and junk food. You may also include these noted foods that are good for your brain health: Brain-Friendly Foods MIND stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. But the MIND approach “specifically includes foods and nutrients that medical literature and data show to be good for the brain, such as berries,” says Martha Clare Morris, ScD, director of nutrition and nutritional epidemiology at Rush University Medical Center. You eat things from these 10 food groups: •Green leafy vegetables (like spinach and salad greens): At least six servings a week •Other vegetables: At least one a day •Nuts: Five servings a week •Berries: Two or more servings a week •Beans: At least three servings a week •Whole grains: Three or more servings a day •Fish: Once a week •Poultry (like chicken or turkey): Two times a week •Olive oil: Use it as your main cooking oil. •Wine: One glass a day You avoid: •Red meat: Less than four servings a week •Butter and margarine: Less than a tablespoon daily •Cheese: Less than one serving a week •Pastries and sweets: Less than five servings a week •Fried or fast food: Less than one serving a week.

Dear, Welcome to Lybrate. Tobacco is addictive. Cigarette also contains 4000+ carcinogenic chemicals other than nicotine. Nicotine and other chemicals can cause cancer of different types and areas. Throat cancer, mouth cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer and brain problems can result. Over and above smoking may also increase the risk factor of heart attack and brain stroke. Please quit smoking. The best method is to leave it and continue with your will power. There are other methods like Nicotine Replacement therapy and pharmacotherapy combined. If you’re ready to stop smoking and willing to get the support you need, you can recover from nicotine addiction and abuse abuse—no matter how bad the addiction or how powerless you feel. The first step in treating nicotine addiction is accepting that you have a problem. Confronting an addiction and accepting responsibility for your actions isn’t easy. But it’s a necessary step on the road to treatment and recovery. You should then consult a psychiatrist / psychologist who fill follow this treatment. 1. Detoxification using medicines. 2. Behavior modification with the help of therapies. 3. Counseling. 4. Medication to sustain and 5. Long term support. These given steps are essential for any addict to get effectively rid of smoking. Therefore, you need to stick to the treatment plan and cooperate with your psychiatrist / psychologist. Mind power building therapy, motivation therapy etc should help you doing so. I suggest you to consult a psychologist or de addiction therapist. Take care.

Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

Do not panic. In anxiety people tend to amplify their symptoms or whatever little sensation they are having in the body and see it as life threatening. Continue to take mediation for anxiety and do some deep breathing exercises. Pay less attention to your body.

Psychologist,
These could be fears which are unfounded or have a rational reason. A counselor can help you to get over these fears logically and also help you to work on some unhelpful beliefs that you are having. I am guessing social anxiety or public speaking since you haven't given details. Rest assured that these conditions are treatable medically and non medically too. You can start by slowly exposing yourself to small groups where you are comfortable and then gradually move to larger groups. You might need to learn public speaking skills to give you more confidence. Do deep breathing, meditation and other exercises to improve your mental and physical health.

I do not want to do masturbating, I don't like but I can't control when that type of feeling and I can't concentrate on my studies properly. My mind is totally diverted whn that type of feeling comes. What can I do?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
Masturbation is not really bad; it is the addiction to it that is bad. Not even the number of years is a problem but the frequency and compulsiveness to do it is to be considered for its ill-effects. At your age you may feel it difficult and it can become addictive if you have alone time, if you obsess about it, and if you are not into relationships. The problem with addiction to this is that you may go on to prefer masturbation to heterosexual contact, even when you are married. That obviously would be an insult to your wife and will lead to a lot of conflict. Heterosexual contact is very wholesome and the physiology is made exactly for penile and vaginal contact. You will instead enjoy a poor replica of this and not know or care for the difference. The second thing that can happen with addiction is that it will become compulsive and will have no boundaries or limits, since it can be done all by yourself, whenever, wherever, and however too. The big problem a lot of children get into is the guilt around this. A useful way to discharge the energy is to get into contact games, or exercises, or even hobbies to channelize it. Also you should not spend too much time alone, and you need to keep your mind occupied with other interesting things and a lot of socializing. Even if you are not interested in marriage, for whatever reasons, it will help you to get into a friendship with a girl and enjoy the relationship where there will be a lot of excitement when you fall in love. Right now your hormones may be very active and your physiological apparatus is primed and ready for sexual stimulation. But because of your age and even otherwise it is important to develop good control and not feed into your impulses. Keeping yourself occupied and living a healthy social life are the keys to manage your sexual drives. It is your guilt that is plaguing you to distraction. Your concentration has nothing to do with masturbation!

5 Ways to Manage Stress!

Msc - Clinical and Counselling Psychology

5 Ways to Manage Stress!

Stress is a response to pressure or threat. It makes us feel tense, on edge or nervous. Stress triggers a surge of hormones called adrenaline which temporarily affects the nervous system, causing your heart rate to increase along with your blood pressure and breathing. In today’s world, everyone feels the weight of stress. Whether it is in school, at work or even at home. It is important to not let the stress we feel interfere with our day to day routines. Here is a way to manage your stress when you feel it is getting to be too much:

Have a mindful SNACK:

Stop: Stop whatever you are doing and take a minute or two and reboot. When you feel everything is getting to be too much, stop mid-bite, mid-step or even mid-yell and reboot yourself.

Notice: Notice what is happening within and around us. Notice the things you can see, hear, smell etc and most importantly see if you can notice your thoughts. You do not need to analyse them. Simply become aware of them.

Accept: Whatever you are struggling with or whatever is stressing you, accept and acknowledge it for what it is without any judgment. Accepting that something has gone wrong or is not going your way is essential to fixing the problem.

Curious: Ground yourself with questions about your environment and what you are feeling. Ask yourself questions regarding the same. What am I feeling? What am I thinking? What do I see? What do I hear?  Asking these questions will help you ground yourself and take the necessary steps in solving the issue.

Kindness: Realistically speaking, it is hard to find the silver lining for all problems. Sometimes the problems we are faced with are daunting, unpleasant or boring. Yet, it still needs to be solved. If we approach every person and problem with a positive attitude it will help get things back on track.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
The word depressed is a common everyday word. People might say" i'm depressed" when in fact they mean" i'm fed up because i've had a row, or failed an exam, or lost my job" etc. These ups and downs of life are common and normal. Most people recover quite quickly. With true depression, you have a low mood and other symptoms each day for at least two weeks consult a psychiatrist and get evaluated.
