Hi sir. I am very intelligent in my childhood and upto my +2 but now a days in engineering. I can't get memorized the topics. I am forgetting all I read, I have lack of concentration problem. Is smoking n drinking are the reasons? I have exams very soon expecting soon reply for the problem.

Because of your age at that time when you were in +2, there may have been hormonal imbalances which may impact your memory because of the chemical but also the distractions that come with it. But you may work on the following even if the hormones kick in: Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. With regard to memory, it is very important that your brain and body is ideally rested to be able to recall whatever is required, rather comfortably. Puzzles pose problems to the brain that help it to use new pathways and neurons, which give the brain considerable exercise. It taxes the left brain to use logic to solve the myriad possibilities which other activities do not stimulate. Crosswords are excellent for vocabulary learning and use. Jigsaws and Rubik cube stimulate different permutations to finally settle on the most likely one. Picture completion and anagrams help approach problem solving from several angles. Do Sudoku, and memory co-relation activities and skills. Have a good night’s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, consume less of fat and use olive oil instead, do Yoga meditation exercises, etc. You need to check out if you are stronger visual or auditory. The visual is a better mode than the auditory. However, if you combine the two modes, you will get the best concentration. Have a special place of learning, which should be well lit, with soft painted walls, well-ventilated, with no distractions. When you get bored, study by writing. If you repeat learning at least five to seven times, you will apparently remember for a longer time. Sit comfortably but do not slouch. The reading material should be of a fairly large print. Study at small intervals of about 40 minutes and then take a break or change the subject. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. There are some memory enhancing techniques and study methods that your teacher will be able to guide you with. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling too. Smoking and drinking too has an effect if you indulge in them. Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

It may have nothing to do with smoking unless something specific has happened which you have not mentioned. Any which way, smoking is not at all good. It would be very prudent, Prudence, to quit it and with immediate effect. For the back pain get some physiotherapy, if it is too severe and if it continues for an extended period of time.

I am 45 years old and I am suffering from acidity since last 5 years please give me the solution.

MBBS, AFIH, PGDMLS, MD-HRM, MD-HM
General Physician, Gurgaon
I am 45 years old and I am suffering from acidity since last 5 years please give me the solution.
Dear lybrate-user ji, if you have acidity since 5 yrs, it means that you need some investigations to find out the cause like h pylori infection in your stomach, because if you have h pylori infection in your stomach then it may produce on and off acidity problem, the second point is about kind of a diet - the more spicy and the more masala food you take there is a chance that the acidity content remains high ; also one should not put the body in long fasting status - like after getting in the morning - you should have a good breakfast; if you skip breakfast then it will harm your stomach and the system therefore for every 4 or 5 hours if you have some water or have some food - that is good for the system- there are certain aasanas which will help you to reduce your acidity, I suggest you to get in touch with some yoga teacher also who would guide you properly. If there is a h pylori infection as I said, you need to complete the course of the treatment which is at least a period of 4 weeks so unless you rule out certain abnormality through a gastroenterologist it is very difficult to treat longstanding acidity problem.

Being constipated means your bowel movements are difficult or happen less often than normal. Almost everyone has it at some point in life, and it's usually not serious. Still, you'll feel much better when your system is back on track. The normal length of time between bowel movements varies widely from person to person. Some people have bowel movements three times a day. Others have them only once or twice a week. Going longer than three or more days without one is usually too long. After three days, the stool or feces become harder and tougher to pass. Homeopath can effectively help in such condition.

Symptoms of clinical depression-

The symptoms of depression can be complex and vary widely between people. But as a general rule, if you are depressed, you feel sad, hopeless and lose interest in things you used to enjoy.
The symptoms persist for weeks or months and are bad enough to interfere with your work, social life and family life.
There are many other symptoms of depression and you're unlikely to have every one listed below.

1) Psychological symptoms include:-
# continuous low mood or sadness
# feeling hopeless and helpless
# having low self-esteem
# feeling tearful
# feeling guilt-ridden
# feeling irritable and intolerant of others
# having no motivation or interest in things
# finding it difficult to make decisions
# not getting any enjoyment out of life
# feeling anxious or worried
# having suicidal thoughts or thoughts of harming yourself

2) Physical symptoms include:
# moving or speaking more slowly than usual
# change in appetite or weight (usually decreased, but sometimes increased)
# constipation
# unexplained aches and pains
# lack of energy or lack of interest in sex (loss of libido)
# changes to your menstrual cycle
# disturbed sleep (for example, finding it hard to fall asleep at night or waking up very early in the morning)

3) Social symptoms include:
# not doing well at work
# taking part in fewer social activities and avoiding contact with friends
# neglecting your hobbies and interests
# having difficulties in your home and family life

If you experience some of these symptoms for most of the day, every day for more than two weeks, you should seek help from your doctor.
See your doctor if you think you may be depressed

Depression can come on gradually, so it can be difficult to notice something is wrong. Many people continue to try to cope with their symptoms without realising they are ill. It can take a friend or family member to suggest something is wrong.

Doctors describe depression by how serious it is:

mild depression has some impact on your daily life
moderate depression has a significant impact on your daily life
severe depression makes it almost impossible to get through daily life – a few people with severe depression may have psychotic symptoms

Grief and depression-
It can be hard to distinguish between grief and depression. They share many of the same characteristics, but there are important differences between them.
Grief is an entirely natural response to a loss, while depression is an illness.

People who are grieving find their feelings of loss and sadness come and go, but they're still able to enjoy things and look forward to the future.
In contrast, people who are depressed have a constant feeling of sadness. They don't enjoy anything and find it hard to be positive about the future.

Other types of depression-
There are different types of depression, and some conditions where depression may be one of the symptoms. These include:

Postnatal depression-
Some women develop depression after having a baby. Postnatal depression is treated in similar ways to other forms of depression, with talking therapies and antidepressant medicines.

Bipolar disorder-
is also known as "manic depression". It's where there are spells of depression and excessively high mood (mania). The depression symptoms are similar to clinical depression, but the bouts of mania can include harmful behaviour such as gambling, going on spending sprees and having unsafe sex.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)-
Also known as "winter depression", SAD is a type of depression that has a seasonal pattern usually related to winter.

I am 50 year old having problem of auto immune disease called granulomatosis with poly angitis. Diagnosed last year. Started drugs Now I am better but afraid to have the same problems again. I am 50 year old having problem of auto immune disease called granulomatosis with poly angitis. Diagnosed last year. ...
Hi lybrate-user, I appreciate you seeking help. As I understand, treatment with chemotherapy drugs works by suppressing the immune system. Simultaneously, co-administration of steroids too are known to arrest systemic inflammation. On the contrary, a treatment with natural medications, including homeopathy, are usually aimed at elimination of the root cause (s) & modulation of the immune system over a period of time that not only reduces the severity of the disease & its symptoms but also can be instrumental in effecting a cure gradually. Contextually, it makes sense to integrate suitably with safe & effective natural medicines that not only help reduce/ alleviate the side effects of chemo therapies but also synergize effectively to improve clinical outcomes. Hope this helps. You can connect for further integrative traction as appropriate, anytime. Do take care and all the very best.
