Hip Osteoarthritis - Know How Physiotherapy Can Help You!

With age, most bones of the body undergo degenerative changes leading to reduced movement. The cartilage that is present in the joints allowing free movement is gradually lost due to wear and tear. This loss of cartilage makes the movement painful. This can also be caused by obesity and trauma, but age is the most common cause. The reduced movement leads to weight gain, which further aggravates the osteoarthritis.

Hips are one of the most commonly affected areas of osteoarthritis. Especially with overweight people, hips are quite often affected. In most people, early diagnosis can help in arresting progress and even reverse changes. This will help avoid chronic use of pain medications and major surgical treatments for managing the osteoarthritis.

Some of the most effective ways of managing osteoarthritis include the following:

  1. Weight loss: Reducing weight is one the most important cornerstones of managing osteoarthritis. People who reduce weight will see a drastic improvement in their symptoms.
  2. Pain medications: Pain is one of the main reasons that people seek medical help and that is when the diagnosis is made. Therefore, for immediate relief, pain control is essential. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often used to control pain. In parallel, other measures for long-term control of osteoarthritis should be undertaken.
  3. Cold therapy: Using cold packs in the area of pain can provide great relief from pain attacks.
  4. Electrotherapy: Use of mild amounts of electricity can stimulate the nerve endings, reduce pain, and help in pain control.
  5. Acupuncture: Relieving pressure points which can increase inflammation is also widely used to control pain.
  6. Soft tissue massage: The soft tissues around the affected hip joint are regularly massaged, augmented by the use of a topical agent, which can help relieve the pain. The circulation is also improved, which can help in long-term symptom management including improved immune functions.
  7. Regular exercise: A well-planned routine exercise regimen will help control pain, improve movement, reduce fatigue, improve endurance, and improve the overall quality of life. All affected tissues should be covered in the exercise bones, muscles and cartilage.

Using a combination of these techniques, the physiotherapy will aim to achieve the following.

  1. Pain relief and protection: The first thing to manage is the pain, which brings the patient to the doctor. Once that is controlled, then long-term management needs to be planned.
  2. Restoring hip movement and strength: Once the pain settles down, then the muscle strength, tension, endurance, and range of motion need to be worked upon. This restoration will be done in phases, and with each phase, greater range of motion will be achieved with lesser discomfort to the patient.

Physiotherapy uses various techniques to minimise symptoms and in some people, even complete reversal of changes is possible. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a physiotherapist.

Hello Anir How did your hamstring became painful? Did you do any physical exertion? Where is the pain exactly. You need to take rest and apply lot of ice every daily 6 times for 10 minutes every time. Do hamstring stretching slowly.

In spite of above treatment, if your morning stiffness is persistent, you may be suffering from one of the arthropathies. You can try continuing the muscle relaxant from your treating doctor to see if it helps. You may need to modify your daily habits and make them more suited to your body requirements. This may include your workplace and body habitus changing as per a therapist guidance. You should use ergonomically designed furniture and follow good posture practices. Drugs should be started under the supervision of a qualified doctor only. If you follow the regimen and treatment, you'll see the results in around 2 - 3 weeks time.

Hello. Maintain a right standing and sitting posture, keep your back always straight, avoid carrying weight on back. Hold or carry weight divided equally in both the hands or shoulders (to avoid over straining on one particular hand or shoulder). Lie down on bed on your back without pillow. Exercise: Practice Shavasana or Corpse Pose as it looks like a dead body. If practiced correctly and with full efforts, can relax every body part, relaxing not only the body but also the mind: Spread the legs one to two feet apart, the toes are turned outwards, the heels facing each other, a comfortable distance apart. Bring the arms a little away from the body, palms turned upward. Relax the neck and allow it to turn to the side if it is more comfortable. Close the eyes and focus the attention on the body, breathing normally. Medication: Take homoeopathic medicines - Arnica 200 and Rhus Tox. 200 - take both of them thrice daily for 1 week. Also, apply Schwabe's Topi-Arnica and Topi MP Gel on the affected area in circular motions gently thrice a day. Get back to me thereafter.

Your heel posture is not in right direction on weight bearing. Due to weak calf muscle, flat foot. Don't worry do these steps:- 1. For pain relief use hot water bottle take your foot on bottle and gentle push and move forward backward massage for 5min. 2. Stand on toes of both legs for 10 counts then relaxe do it for 15 times. 3. Ankle stretching by towel 5 times. 4. If arch of your foot soul is reduce then use arch orthotics.

U have to take proper and symptomatic treatment in homoeopathy. Some medicine as aconite 30 and bryonia 200 has good result in such cases and if possible please attach ur pic and avoid oily and spicy food and wash your face and neck with plain water at the interval of 2-3hrs
